He does have a nice voice, but I agree that he needs to learn how to use it properly...perhaps beginning with a better sense of pitch. A good teacher could help greatly. I hope he finds one. There is potential here.
He was flat some of the time and was not resonating properly because he made the effort from the throat rather than the belly and back muscles-perhaps?

@wotan3000 I would put Ferruccio Furlanetto on that list of singers who perform this better. And i'd put him on the list of today's singers, those of 10 years ago, and 20 years ago. He's a positively brilliant bass, and this is one of his best roles...along with Don Quichotte and Boris Godunov.

It is a BEAUTIFUL voice...but a terrible technique. He seems to have a soul and a brain and a wonderful instrument. I hope he finds proper teaching in order to flesh out the potential of his gifts.
Yes, I agree with hermanzoon. He has a very good basic voice. But what he needs is voice development through being tought the correct technique. Perhaps he is being given instruction and he is in the early stages of developement. We shouldn't give up on him.
He actually has a very nice quality to his voice. Maybe he is not a "real" singer. Maybe this gentleman learned the aria because he loves it and this was his one chance to sing it in this manner. I applaud him for his effort and sincerity.

I can tell you that I even heard worse than this at a live concert. This person has a beautiful voice. He just needs to learn how to use it properly.

He has no support or breath control, his intonation is flat and his phrasing poor...other than that...
He needs to get a technique, practice it and come back in a few years.

He is not THAT far off of the singers today, though.
If you can't count the active performing basses with international careers who sing this better on one hand, then you are probably missing 3 fingers.
Seriously, link videos of currently performing basses who have good tone, intonation and vocal size.
I wish I could list more than Pape off the tip of my tongue.
Go back even 10 years and the list is longer, 20 years... 50 years. How far back to find a lot?
