It must be IMPOSSIBLE to get any non vocal signals between band members when they're all so far apart. Normally on stage you can anticipate things just by watching eachother, but how are you supposed to do that when you're on opposite sides of one of the biggest stage structures in history?
It's quite incredible that this is pretty much the only such incident on the whole tour!
bono wanted to redo d 2nd verse like he said , nd he sang it again but the rest of the band went on to the " love is a temple " bit .....mass confusion , good ta see that one of d best bands in the world actually are human ......
this song just goes to show that these guys are just human beings. they're still just 4 mates that can go out and play great music and put on a show. that's it.
i kindda liked it.That's not embarassing at all because it's a difficult song, very difficult actually, and sometimes it happens. They are not 20 years old.
Definitely bono's fault he went into the 2nd verse for a 2nd time, when he was supposed to sing the 3rd verse instead...and since part of the background song is playback, it wasn't as easy for the others to go back to the 2nd verse as bono asked them to... thus at 04:11 the engineers stop the playback. Regardless Bono makes fun of himself and finishes the song... Still a great band...It once happened to Depeche Mode on Nov 3rd 2005 with Everything Counts...unlike U2 they started over..hehe
you guys shouldnt be so harsh, first concerts are always a bit scratchy, ive watched the same song that they played more recently and they've got it perfect
It was the first gig of the tour for gods sake! Every band has teething problems with the first few gigs. The first few gigs of the Popmart tour were apparently shit and even Coldplays fantastic Viva La Vida Tour sounded dodgy from the beginning.
Bono was having monitor(speakers which allow you to here the whole problems there. he says ''lets try that verse again''. he couldn't here himself through his monitors in his ear.
I was there and from my point of view I think the Edge went wrong because of Bono who messed up with lyrics in the second chorus. From that moment til the end the song lost its magic. Anyway, thursday's performance was simply amazing.
I don't know why Bono decided to do this, maybe because his in-ears went out, or something. But he decided to re-start the song from the second verse. Fine, but the problem is that the keyboard loop the band is playing to keeps going like normal, and went into the bridge chords like it's supposed to. Bono was still singing the next verse because he's now behind in the song. But the band has to stay with the loop to not get discordant. So then Bono has them re-start everything.......
.......but the loop is still in the wrong place, and they eventually have to kill the loop altogether. Bono should have known that where the loop changes chords, and that he can't decide on the fly to re-start a song with an intricate of a loop as One has. 'Bad' is a different story, because it just loops over and over. But 'One''s loop actually changes chords. I'll bet Edge, who does most of the band's orchestration, had some words for Bono after this. :-)
bono had the audacy that he was screwing things up and stopped!! but still a great song for the lovers everyone, and check out how many exibitions had after 5 days or something. pretty amazing!! cheers from CASCAIS- PORTUGAL
Yep. Edge was fine, and so was Adam and Larry. Think Bono got lost and couldn't hear. Still funny though. And Bono is known for changing the lyrics, not following along, sometimes, and he used to run off into the audience and scare the band by climbing the lighting rafters and eqipment. Not shocking.
it's live! people, this can happen. no big deal. still bono does what he wants and does not stick to what the song demands sometimes. it's not edges fault at all, even if he had better nights.u2 shows always start off pretty rough. wait for the second barcelona show. you will see they just need to get in the sound! :-)
...did anyone notice Bozo touch his ear mic as if he wasn't hearing what he was supposed to? Think thats what screwed them up....but at least he had the cool head to stop it and start again. And the missing guitar at the end...they're usually much more on the ball than that...I think the show will only really get going after 10-20 live performances...iron out the rough spots because from what i've seen and heard the show was spectacular but the music didn't reach the heights.
This was almost two hours into the set, and it was a sweltering night. I think the Edge was beginning to get heat stroke under his hat. Fascinating to watch this technical/ human error going on, and how clearly and calmly Bono sorted it out. Yes - opening night - amazing how well the concert went given this, nearly everything worked out brilliantly. Undoubtedly the best band in the world.
Only true perfectionists would stop and start again. They are human, it was opening night. That was awesome. Also, if there was ever any doubt about who's in charge, Bono erased it there. Good going boys, get it right, get it tight.
Kinda reminds me of Staring at the Sun on opening night of the PopMart tour in Las Vegas... The critics panned it... but, my friend Diodoro was there, and said it was great, he thought!
Actually did anyone notice that Bono's not playing his own guitar in this version, it's just Edge. I wonder why? Usually when they play this song live, Bono plays the guitar (the green Gretsch one) with the heavy distortion chords after the first verse, and Edge plays the riffs...
One of the few times where it wasn't Bono screwing up the song! The band can be forgiven cuz of all the times they had to adjust on the spot from Bono missing/forgetting lyrics...
Bit of a trainwreck but no big deal, the nerves must have been incredible Bono seemed amazingly unfased. I bet those lyrics are being learnt as we speak!!
This is such a relief - if geniuses like U2 can still slip up on a song they play as often as One, I guess the rest of us shouldn't be to embarrassed when it happens to us! U2 FOREVER <3
I guess this is one of the risks when you use instrumentals you're not playing - you can't decide to change anything while playing because you're tied to the backing track. A band like U2 is better off without those limits - they're too inventive to do everything by the book!
Actually they use sequencers so that pre-recorded instruments such as some keyboards/additional instrumentation can be used to make the sound bigger. Some keyboard sounds are actually an effect pedal The Edge uses to add strings to the guitar notes he plays. The downside of the sequencers is that they are fixed so improvisation is limited. Hence here when they re-started the backing track was out of synch at 4:00 and the production team turned if off at 4:11.
The Edge control the backing track from his enourmous foot-panel-gizmo and should have turned it off. Bono knew about it, since he picked up his guitar to back up The Edge when he did the solo.
you're right. it's not first time they do crap with one, all the time cause of the added strings. it's a shame, even cause one is one of the most loved songs so...
they should take someone playing keys live during some songs... it's the only thing i also hated on their shows, the rest is amazing.
the restarted the backing track on the second verse, but the band restarted thinking they were on the first verse. the loop went into the outro while the band played the second verse. totally mucked that one up...
rock n roll how it should be, not at all perfect. I understand the magnitude of such a venue but that's whats lacking with u2 shows now, spontaneity. it's all a little too directed. again, I understand that but I don't like it. I'm still going to check out 3 gigs though :-D
Definitely, something went wrong, very strange...The bass can't be heard at the end and The Edge is doing something weird...as if the melodies weren't complete...
Bono at 4:17: "Have you come here to play conductor, just listen to what I say" xD

They should always play this without backing tracks or additional musicians.
Once the underground musicians (Terry and CPU) cut out (4:11), it suddenly feels more intimate and raw. Just 4 guys, "3 chords, and the truth" !!

And get better, Bono. Hope to see you in Seattle eventually. But don't rush. You need a strong back when you're saving the world.
