  • So tight, and awesome groove. A true drummer.

  • holy fuck that is TIGHT!

  • He was looking healthy here, how he could die? :(

  • @NikolaVa87 Sigh i ask the same question everytime I watch this.

  • @NikolaVa87 Once again; the drummer always dies. Take up the ukulele and turn the amp up to 11. That way you will be all diverse and shit. As a bonus, you will live to tell us about it.

  • no disrespect but it looked like he was going to burp while explaining his 16th note patterns.

  • @Coixxman Yeah - I always had the impression that he ate too much Burger King before shooting this video. Didn't hurt the groove any, at least....

  • That snare sounds great!!! Looks like is a brass 14"x4"..

  • 0:14 He burps! This video makes me laught every time. By the way he was a great drummer. RIP Jeff!

  • what a tasty grooves!!!

what is name of this drum workshop?

    thanks for uploading!

  • omg i love the sound of his kit

  • Solid playing. Damn.

  • Here we go with the "drum guys"....he was a little high here,,,he was having fun......make your own beats up...do you think he watched you tube?

  • this guy had the best bass and snare drum sound ever. so fat, it almost sounds like its from a drum machine. did he put pillows in his bass drum? was it in the close-miking techniques? What a legend.

  • how can anybody not love this man. mr.groove himself

  • it makes my cook hard!!!!

  • I just listened to the original Michael Mcdonald recording of "I Keep Forgetting" and clocked it at (approximately) quarter note=96 bpm... That's ridiculously fast for one-handed 16th notes. Try playing along with the song, you'll see what I'm talking about, your right hand will feel like falling off.....

  • @29dave

Check out the live version of "why does love got to be so sad" by Derrick and the Dominoes on here, drumming by Jim Gordon. THOSE are arm falling off 16th notes.

    /watch?v=ukzP0X_1nX4

  • Looks like he has indigestion.

  • @justinrinearson - Supposedly he had just eaten a meatball sandwhich

  • i think i wet myself a little..

  • Why are you douches arguing about metal?

  • this guy is so gangsta man

  • Death metal is still music, and it's still about the groove. If i was asked to play on a children of bodom record, would i play the rosanna groove? No, I would play what sounds good, and that would be something fast and in your face.

  • @andyauyong how about a hot steaming cup of who gives a phk?

  • this guys timing is soo good

  • metal is an art form and the GOOD metal drummers are just as solid as old Jeff was... and many of them understand all angles from which they can play their instrument, metal is just what they are doing. Look at Derek Roddy or Flo Mounier... to be able to play stuff like they do and be spot on, at over 200bpm..... I don't see how you can devalue that. Sure the WFD is a joke, and we can all play 16th note rolls, but to do it precisely is something amazing. Just a thought.

  • I always read people telling the metal guys that they don't understand this... and being from a strict metal upbringing until my 20's, I can let you metal guys in on a secret- these older guys know what they are talking about! One day you will get bored with all the fast stuff and you will start to analyze what else you can do with this instrument... and that's when you will turn to guys like Jeff here, or Steve Jordon. It's all about groove. With that being said, to all you older gents....

  • Hey people that playing death metal, listen me...this is not a video for you, this is a video for people that understand what is music. Music is a form of art, it is not an exercise at the gym. Death metal is good for increase your calves, but only for this, when you will understand what is play Music, come back here and learned through this master.

  • Jeff wasn't asked to play on the recordings he was on because he was a slacker! Paul Anka, Chet Atkins, Larry Carlton, Stanley Clarke, Hall and Oates, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Billy Preston, Bonnie Raitt, Lee Ritenour, Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, James Taylor and Warren Zevon were but a few that were privy to Jeff's talents. You can't look at that list and say there wasn't diversity. Jeff could do it all.

  • See more of Jeff Porcaro on SoulDrummers . com

  • Guys!!! What kind of comments is that??? JEFF PORCARO = NO COMMENT!!! Just watch and learn ( If you can )

  • One of the greatest drummers of all time. Groove that goes into your very soul. RIP Jeff.

  • damn i love his grooves!!

  • @minase0906 That wasn't really my point, but alright. And not if you dedicate yourself to the drum kit. Granted it takes a long time to master just one style, but you can definitely master more than just one style. If you want gigs and a well rounded capability, practicing all styles will get you there. Plus, you can utilize other styles within the one mastered. So, basically I was saying that being open minded to all styles benefits one more than being close minded.

  • It's a fact that the more genre you can get into, more diverse your playing is. I see very non-interesting to see, let's say a jazz drummer, who can't punch it hard, or a metal drummer, who can't play easy and dinamic.. For ex. Travis Barker can play only hard stuff and he's good at his genre but that's it, nothing else, boring.. I like drummers like Porcaro or Veckl, Chambers, who can play mind-blowing in any genre and that is what all drummers should strive for in my opinion..

  • @Earesistible Couldn't have said that any better! You're absolutely right, bro

  • @Earesistible Porcaro , cesar zuiderwijk , neil peart , steve gedd awesome ... But guys like Les binks are awesome too

  • @Earesistible No drummers should strive to play whatever they can play well. I'm not saying don't try. If you have it and can cross over, go for it. If you don't stay with what's in your blood and keep making it sound good. Jeff was a very unique drummer. Very few will ever be able to cross lines like he did and still make it sound incredible.

  • @Earesistible i completely agree with where you're coming from, that a diverse drummer is a great drummer, however travis claims to have grown up playing a lot of jazz, funk and fusion. clearly he just enjoys what he's known for more, or its more marketable (people forget that the man is an excellent entrepreneur). i reckon if you assume that drummers only know the genre they are renowned for then you're just as ignorant as people who are like TRV$ B@RKR IS DA BEST DRUMMA EVAAHH!

  • @Earesistible I think you're right that the more genres a drummer plays, the more diverse his range and ability is, I mean, it stands to reason. But definately fuzzz182 is right, Travis grew up playing a lot more than punk and so you cannot totally write off all of Travis' work. For example, there are vids of him showing off his classical side drumming ability and he is really very good.

  • @Earesistible That's right,E! Dynamics need to be practiced along with diff..genres.Take Dennis Chambers, for one.Playing hard funk, and playing Jazz- Fusion-Eastern with Mclaughlin or Latin Rock w/Santana.He's one of the Go-To drummers!

  • @Earesistible Well said man

  • @minase0906 I think you are confusing style with genre. Jeff Porcaro and Bernard Purdy have their own distinct style, yet both are able to play different genres of music. Just look at who they have played for in the studio, and tell me that is not true.

  • This feature is presented in Porcaromotion. 6 thumbs up.

  • I keep forgettin' GROOVE!!!!

  • The most intense and soulful drummer i've ever heard, instead of those theatrical and boring drum heroes. No one keeps the groove like him! RIP Jeff!

  • Awesome drumming!

He does a lot of burpping on this video too.

They must of filmed after lunch or something.

But hey, it's Jeff! He could blow farts on his drum video if he wants, cause those beats are seriously bad ass!

  • Jeff is well yipped up in this video if you know what I mean.

  • Wow, i have been playing drums for 35 years now and i could never do that with such class and fluidness !

He was truly one of the greatest !

  • Love his playing! He was probably 10 times the drummer I'll ever be :P

  • This is the simple answer to all those people (professionals or amateurs) who do an upload and showing their technical exercises to 200 bpm ... try this!! I have not seen videos of 16th play like that, except for video of Jeff Porcaro!

  • @smilzomagro

Very true. In a day and age where speed at technique are shown as the "best" way to play, it's refreshing to see musicians just lay down a solid groove every once in a while.

  • @smilzomagro 200 bpms aren't that big of a deal anymore... It's more like 250 plus now, thanks to George Kollias and the other Extreme Drumming Gods. haha. But, I do agree... I'd like to see more of my fellow Extreme drummers get into the dynamic side of drumming. And vice versa.

  • @blackwell8181 Extreme drumming is a waste of practice time.

  • @metalmike83 That sounds as close minded as metal drummers who find dynamics a waste of time. It will be nice the day that drummers learn to appreciate all aspects of drumming, instead of act like you and bash a particular style.

  • @blackwell8181 Well, anyone who says dynamics is a waste of time is not a musician. End of story. I actually started out on the metal side of things...you know training to play at 250+ beats per minute...then I realised how much time it was taking away from learning actual music. I wasn't learning any cool beats or learning to keep time (the main function of a drummer) I was just focusing on speed. And that's all extreme drumming is. Speed. Good for two things: WDF contests and cookie monster.

  • @metalmike83

dynamics is practically everything in drumming. it is groove, it is inflection, power, space, timing...speed is great for, speed. dynamics is useful for everything else.

  • @blackwell8181 Oh, and true metal doesn't incorporate any blast beats into its music and doesn't do retarded cookie monster vocals. The best metal drummers ever have been the ones who focused on dynamics and technique such as Scott Travis.

  • @metalmike83 Man, you are just wreaking of that close mindedness. You really are. There is no reason to bash genres of music or styles of playing. Being a musician is being open minded to all styles of music. You're really pathetic to be forty years old and bashing things via the internet. haha. Also, practicing more will also help with the speed gaining and cool groove learning. It's not that hard, just practice more, with efficiency. Cookie monster vocals... haha. You're seriously lame, fool.

  • @metalmike83 Also, your boy Scott Travis isn't doing anything better than Eric Singer of Kiss. He's a solid drummer, but nothing mind blowing either. But, you don't see me bashing his style or that style of "metal" either. You need to learn to be respectful and that's when you'll become a musician and not an internet douche that you are right now. It's unfortunate that you listen to metal, because you people put a bad reputation on people like me who are open to everything.

  • @blackwell8181 Let me get this straight... "You people" is referring to people who listen to metal exclusively? And that those people who listen to metal exclusively make you look bad? I'm open to everything too, but I don't see how that statement makes any sense.

  • @Nirnroot08 Well, I wasn't talking to you specifically. Though, what I am stating is more directed to all drummers who talk trash on other styles. I believe all styles have their own distinction and respectful aspects. Whether it's the finesse of Jazz or the power and speed of death metal. They all have their perks. The closed mindedness of people is what bothers me.

  • @Nirnroot08 And most of the people that listen to a specific genre of music tend to hate on other styles. Such as, Jazz guys dissing Metal guys. And vice versa... Though, I see how what I stated is kind of hard to get what I'm saying. I just find a lot of people bashing others and it's quite annoying... Get me?

  • @blackwell8181

What it boils down to is what you want to become as a musician. A true musician is willing to do what it takes to become well-rounded and versatile. A drummer is not a musician if he does not understand how to be musical. I have no problem with WFD or drum olympics, but that is largely different than musicianship.

In a nutshell - extreme drumming IS a waste of time if one is trying to become a musician.

  • @PositivelyBored In your opinion, it is. But in mine, I disagree completely. Always practicing and playing will get you to achieve your goals. Doesn't matter, how much time you put into something is how much better you will get out of it, with proper practicing and time of course. Now, obviously if one just strives for speed, that person will most likely get it. Just depends on what you work on and how long you work on it.

  • Awesome beat, i realy like he's way he play the funkystyle drum. But he's snare sounds abit empty for my flavor

  • the SEX

  • i wish i was as good as jeff

  • @PositivelyBored

I'm a pro touring drummer and let me tell you firsthand that coke is still alive and well in the music biz. Not quite as bad the LA session scene of the 80's was but I've lately seen a lot of people go down in flames because of it, not to mention booze and heroin. Many musicians feel a sense of invincibility until it happens to them. It doesn't make them bad people either. Just bad choices.

  • playing 16th that fast in one hand is pretty technically demanding

  • @antibulletdodger101 lol if you can't do 16nth notes with one hand you should prolly stop playing drums

  • @jjdrummer108 you retard. Ive been playing drums for over 10 years. to keep those 16th that tight and consistent is part of why Jeff is so famous and this video wouldnt be on here if it was some random 2 and 4.

  • @antibulletdodger101 lol? no sir you are fucking retarded. this video is from a dvd of him giving lessons. 10 years and its tough for you to keep 16th notes? damn fail man.

  • @jjdrummer108 I know about the original video. It has nothing to do with not being able to play 16th notes in one one hand, it has to do about playing it with the kind of flow and feeling like Jeff does. It takes a teenage rant to go around telling other people they shouldnt play. Pretty pathetic.

  • Comment removed

  • @jjdrummer108 Dude, you're an asshole. lol You're the kind of cocky asshole that makes me hate being a drummer, cause I gotta put up with your bitching and attitude. Someone's gotta say it.

  • Comment removed

  • @jjdrummer108 Excuse me? lol What the fuck gives you the right to say that? Try playing 16ths on one hand with jeff's kinda groove, and THEN you can talk. I think that's a fair deal.

  • @RubgyDrums lmfao i saw u saying its hard for amateurs to do. who's to say I haven't been playing for years? This is an beginners instructional video. go look it up man. this is outdated and for BEGINNERS. lol you are a fucking pathetic youtube nerd. This tempo is not demanding and his pattern is pretty easy even with the accents (ill say medium with accents). get over it man, you suck.

  • @jjdrummer108 The beat may be for beginners but let's see a beginner play it like this. I doubt it

  • Comment removed

  • @antibulletdodger101 SO true. I can play 16ths on my hi-hat hand at a slow to medium tempo, but do it with that much consistency, clarity, and groove... that's a challenge. Very few amateurs can do so.

  • Wow! I wish I could do that thing!!

  • RIP Jeff You are, and you ll always be a great influence for musicians, not only drummers

  • i wish i had that talent

  • Thanks Jeff, love all your stuff. Check out our smooth westcoast rock with State Cows

  • What happened was he was spraying his roses etc with insecticide, of which he sprayed too much, inhaling it. This triggered a heart attack which occurred due to a heart condition most likely developed from the drugs he took in the 80's. He was clean when he died glenmann62

  • Ohhh...so that's exactly what happened, huh? Maybe I just don't buy anything or everything I read. Whatever the cause, I miss this guy. The studio work...the Boz stuff...and the Toto songs were so great. Just another guy - so dedicated to his works. Sad to think about the so many that don't know, won't know about him or his talent.

    RIP Jeff

  • @DickLodge68 Don't forget Donald Fagen's "The Nightfly". Porcaro's playing is an essential (in the perfect non-obtrusive way, as always) part of that album...

  • he was cutting his lawn in florida after doing some coke and fell on top of it after having a massive heart attack, what a great studio and session drummer ,with all his gold and platinum records he played on he should of hired a landscaper to do the physical labor !

  • i read it was a allergic reaction and he had been clean for years before the accident.

  • I read it was insecticide which triggered the heart attack.

  • @glenmann62 Horsesh*t! See wtf1999 comments above for the real reason. On You Tube you can see his wife explaining what happened.

  • a great drummer, you can see that it is all comming from within himself, and not robotic. Very smooth.

  • he always looks like he's got indigestion when he's talking :p

    i always love his grooves

  • Yeah...he should have skipped the burittos before filming.

  • Cocaine will do that to you...

  • This is groove!

  • Snort more coke.

  • Not nice. He had demons for sure...but come on...be cool.

  • Agreed.

  • Just A Little History On Jeff,

Did you guys know he also is the drummer who played on Micheal Jacksons "Beat It", "Human Nature" just to name a few of Jeff some of Jeffs legacy

    R.I.P. Jeff

  • yes, and did YOU know that he was also drummer for Leo Sayer, Bruce Springsteen, Dire Straits, the Manhattan Transfer and the Bee Gees, just to name a few?

  • R.I.P. Jeff. Thank you for the memories...

  • Simply groove but AMAZING...Jeff will be always one of the best drummers ever!!!

  • I always thought bill hicks should have took his drumming career further.

AMAZING drum tone on this video.

  • Have you ever noticed that bill hicks looks kinda like Jeff? lol

  • @TheColbles2009 thats what i was implying, just in this video though, don't mean that badly at all. great drummer and great comedian.

i kept expecting him to light up a cig or swear violently.

  • haha thats funny

  • Haha, bill hicks is my favorite comedian lol

  • This guy was amazing!

  • Jeff Porcaro will n shall always be The grearest drummer I've ever heared with his groove!

  • 47s as tom mics. Fancy. Porcaro was awesome.

  • Theres a loop at 38 seconds

  • Leave Jeff to rest in peace man , he was one of the greatest ever! right along all the legends.

  • dude has the the snare sound of the 80's there

  • Kick on 1 n 3, Snare on 2 n 4.

    Simple pattern, WORLD CLASS GROOVE

  • always the most crisp, perfect time...

  • 70'smusicman: rrdrums is sad. I mean, my god, this is a man who's spent tons of time going around youtube and blasting Steve Gadd. And now Porcaro? WTF?!?! What's next rrdrums, gonna rip Elvin Jones a new one? Hahaha. RR's a pretender. He's been called out many times, yet will NOT post anything of his own playing, despite the simplicity of doing so. He's the Dennis Dennison of YouTube drumming. (For those who once read the usenet group rec.music.makers.percussion.) Hell, it might BE Dennis....

  • Comment removed

  • the funkiest 16th note groove ive ever heard..

  • Purdie's are better. Porcaro was a bit too mechanical.

  • @RITMOTAMBOR exactly what i was thinking

  • @RITMOTAMBOR ooh that's quite a claim. I'd have to go with "Funky Drummer" by the OG Clyde Stubblefield.

  • RIP Jeff, God of grooves!!! Where can I download this instructional video?

  • Great stuff.............

  • Rest in peace

This guy is a phenomenal drummer

  • so good!

  • what can i say, that was pure sex to my ears haha

  • christ, just leave it will you!!!

  • You should be able to see beyond your own personal preferences and acknowledge that some has a certain talent or peculiarity in their playing that makes them special. Wether that talent involves technique, feel, ingenuity, originality, speed, power etc isn't the point.

  • Yeah ok!!! Fuck all you jeff hater's!!!

Great drummer, don't really understand why people are bashing on him!

  • exceptional Jeff

  • Just want to know......what color is the sky in your world??

  • read you're comments about the late Jeff Porcaro. I sort of wonder why the people and bands that used him and there were many could not see your observations, Well I guess they should have called you.

one word to sum you up WANKER. Have some respect.!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Oh fuck, this guy is back again....

  • Haha that's funny...just a studio dude and not the best one....man you have alot to learn about drumming in general if you think that.. Your opinion granted, but trust me you're one of the few who think like that. He IS the shuffle and groove master..can't think of anyone better.

  • Apparently u dunno shit abt drums dude... Jeff was a master in playing shuffle just like Vinny and Simon... playing drums is not all abt power, its the groove that counts and the feel...

  • Does any one know what Jeff is doiing with the High hat? Is he accenting every note on the high hat? Is this finger technique?

  • so please, everyone just enjoy this vid , and stop making hateful comments towards eachother , and bad mouthing great drummers..what have all of you gained by blasting eachother?..absolutely nothing, ..so there you have it !! all these comments were made in vain.. R.I.P. JEFF AND BONZO..YOU WERE BOTH GREAT ,REGARDLESS OF WHAT SOME IGNORANT PEOPLE UP HERE MIGHT THINK !!

    PEACE !

  • 1..guys, it's only drumming and music, and there is no room to bad mouth great drummers just for a matter of personal, albeit, irrelevant opinions..

  • soooo much hate and anger and resentment , and disgruntled dudes up here..jeff was great, bonzo' was great..for the fucking last time , there is no best drummer for this or that era, all were great at what they did..jeff comes from a family of musicians, namely his dad, who played on a lot popular soundtracks and tv themes..namely hawaii 5.0 just to name

  • Jeff Porcaro the MASTER OF POCKET

  • rrdrums: Please dont write about things you dont undestand. thx.

  • he used this beat in Michael McDonald's I keep forgettin... really soft and smooth...

  • I've viewed this entire Video on DVD, He explains why he holds his sticks that way, And drumming isn't about power man. It's about precision, and the feel for the groove man. If your all about power and doing crazy shit, your not good, your just a precussionist or bashes every drum and every Cymbal. That's boring, listen to Mushanga, that drum beat is so unique, I've never heard anyone do anything like that in my life.

  • RIP to a master badass...

    GS

  • Love watching him play...Jeff is the ultimate drummer of all time! But have to have a giggle everytime I watch this...poor thang is suffering the attack of the burps after perhaps catching a quick bite to eat! But man could this guy play.....Love U Jeff RIP!

  • D'accordissimo con smilzomagro.....il suo groove è solamente suo......inimitabile e unico! Grandissimo Jeff...ci manchi tantissimo.........

  • Damn, It really sucks that he died. He was amazing! That rosanna groove is Genius

  • Speaking about great timing!!

  • le dieu mes hommes

  • Great Jeff!..i'm italian, my surname is Porcaro and i play the drums!!

  • E' il migliore...chi ha un groove così? Ci sono un casino di batteristi in gamba, eccezionali, ma sto Groove è inimitabile!

  • Jeff R.I.P.

  • What is name of his Instructional Video, I can't buy it here, where can I download it? thanks

  • didn't he have a dog name toto?

  • The dog in The Wizard of Oz was called Toto, maybe that's what you're thinking of.

  • I used to have a dog called dimebag

  • did he just rip bernard and ran with like it was his in the 80's ?

  • God no, He gave credit to Bernard, and to John Banham, Clearly he said, he incorperated both beats, into his own song, Doesn't mean he totally stole the beats.

  • Charlie Watts

  • Jeff is the greatest. But did he have to drink that generic beer all through this taping?

  • My favourite instructional video. But I'm forever disturbed by the copious amounts of gas Porcaro seemed to have during the taping. The guy couldn't get through 2 sentences without going 'bup, erp, ump," in between words....still a masterpiece, but just had to point that out....
