I agree with the opinion: regardless of how much time is left, you stop a fight based on the sincere judgment of a fighter’s safety. As much as I can easily say stopping a fight with a few sec left is madness, what would be more unfair is to say “yeah he’s pretty much fried right now, but let’s cut him loose and see if he can hold on for a few sec more since the bell’s about to ring anyway”.
I don’t want the ref making drama decisions based on the “bigger-picture”. When it comes to stopping a fight I want the ref to decide one and only one thing in the name of safety for the fighters: can the fighter fairly continue or does the fighter no longer have enough control of his faculties so that any continuation at that point puts the fighter beyond an acceptable risk.
Another vivid way of summing up the stoppage: Ok Taylor gets to finish the last few seconds of the fight but Chavez gets to punch Taylor one more time.
The way I see it, if the ref feels the fighter is done, how can any amount of time left justify letting a fight continue that no longer should?
It’s not the ref’s job to theorize “maybe Chavez won’t throw any more punches or maybe Taylor will duck the last one and survive the round” etc.

It doesn't matter how much time their was because the ref isn't the time keeper. Meldrick didn't respond to him and the ref saw that man could continue no more. Lou Duva is an asshole for making Meldrick try to go out and fight with JCC the last round when he'd won every round of the fight. I don't think the stoppage was right just because of the time remaining. But Taylor should be given more recognition, people hardly seem to know who he is. He fought the fight of his life that night, and he was never the same afterwards

Dont get me wrong i love julio ceasar chavez but taylor schooled him for 11 and a half ish rounds without chavez winnning a single round and then all the heavy thumping shots chavez landed on him caught up and that piece of shit refferee handed chavez the win. And yeah he DID have internal bleeding and a swollen face and brain damage, but he at least deserved the win he fought so hard for. Things like this make me hate the world.

While Taylor was thowing the volume, Chavez was landing the sledgehammers. Not only was Taylor pissing blood but also had a broken orbital bone. Another thing, had Taylor fallen away from the ropes, he never would have made it to his feet. Either way, this fight is a prime example of why title fights should still be 15 rounds.

I agree with the opinion: regardless of how much time is left, you stop a fight based on the sincere judgment of a fighter’s safety. As much as I can easily say stopping a fight with a few sec left is madness, what would be more unfair is to say “yeah he’s pretty much fried right now, but let’s cut him loose and see if he can hold on for a few sec more since the bell’s about to ring anyway”.

I don’t want the ref making drama decisions based on the “bigger-picture”. When it comes to stopping a fight I want the ref to decide one and only one thing in the name of safety for the fighters: can the fighter fairly continue or does the fighter no longer have enough control of his faculties so that any continuation at that point puts the fighter beyond an acceptable risk.

Another vivid way of summing up the stoppage: Ok Taylor gets to finish the last few seconds of the fight but Chavez gets to punch Taylor one more time.
The way I see it, if the ref feels the fighter is done, how can any amount of time left justify letting a fight continue that no longer should?
It’s not the ref’s job to theorize “maybe Chavez won’t throw any more punches or maybe Taylor will duck the last one and survive the round” etc.

Beautiful video presentation, perfectly capturing one of the best qualities of Chavez, which is be it 4 rounds or 400 he comes to work and dismantles opponents.
I remember watching Chavez fights and thinking “come on man pick it up, there’s no need to take it to later rounds, the win is right there...” but his intelligence of the craft is massive, often left me with no choice but to assume he enjoyed punishing his opponents.
