Then 2006 came and so too did Barbaro. Talk about a magnificent horse. Fate however took him much too soon. Just as it did with Ruffian, Go For Wand and so many others. Barbaro changed my life. It was in the midst of my greatest trial that he raced and set the standard for what it is to be a champion.

I think Smarty Jones was a good horse. And i really dont think he gave up in the Belmont. I just think it wasn't wise to use most of his energy on the backstretch trying to be in the lead when it didnt matter.
Also, in the Derby, Edgar Prado never even used the whip on Barbaro to ask for his top speed. If he would have used it he could have shaved another second or two off Barbaro's time but he was ahead by so much he didn't need it.

Yeah that's because his jockey was an Ass and gunned him through 1 mile and a half. I'd like to see you run a race against the best 3yo colts on that distance at top speed and still ahve enough energy to win. And he did come in pretty close since he came in second by not that far. Smarty Jones is the superior horse. And he won the Kentucky derby in the Mud and sog and rain.
Barabro won it but the track conditions were excellent. And his leg gave way in the Preakness on a perfectly good track WHICH MEANS his legs were too fragile OR he'd been run to hard in the Derby which leads me to conclude : His legs had no ohysical endurance and he should have not passed on his genes to any mare unless she had good strong almost heavy legs.

Have you seen pictures of Man O' War? You may notice he had a heavyier build and his legs were thicker. It's our own fault since we started breeding thinner more refinded horses in hope it'd make them faster. WRONG THING TO DO! Indeed if an average haflinger weighs around 1100 lb imagine a 16h very muscualr thoroughbred. His legs just couldn't carry him further. And lots of horses take 'bad steps' and that doesn't literally crush their legs.

Smarty Jones- 2:04.06 Thats a difference of 2.7 seconds and that is a sizeable margin in a horse race.
Theoretically, both horses would have been beaten by Secretariat- 1:59 2/5
which is a world record that still stands.

Yea. There are people saying Barbaro is a hero because he fought for life. It's not exactly fighting when you have a surgey like every week. And because he broke his sesamoid bones in a race. Just 'cause Smarty suffered a fracture outside a race and he didn't die,doesn't make him any less a great racehorse.Both horses are good racers though. I wish some people would consider it a real sport.Because it's filled with athletes. However, if there was no betting, nobody would say it's a sport.

This is really dumb, both of the horses were incredible, but alas we will never know how great either one would have been. I have deep feelings for both horses,since I started following them both back in their 2 yr.old seasons. I doubt the maker of this thing did!!!!!!!!

I don't think it really matters. Barbaro, I believe is by far greater. Smarty was incredible especially after his come back from is skull being smashed, and Barbaro's story is sad but still..Barbaro was idk just it seems he would have won by a lot more O.o in the virtual thing since it won't ever happen...O.o

Also, in the Derby, Edgar Prado never even used the whip on Barbaro to ask for his top speed. If he would have used it he could have shaved another second or two off Barbaro's time but he was ahead by so much he didn't need it.

it would have been an amazing race if Smarty Jones and Barbaro would have faced off. They both were champions.
It would have been cool if they had won the Triple Crown, but even if Barbaro hadn't been injured Bernardini would have given Barbaro a lot of trouble in the Preakness, he definately wouldn't have walked away with the Preakness like he did the Derby.

Yeah that's because his jockey was an Ass and gunned him through 1 mile and a half. I'd like to see you run a race against the best 3yo colts on that distance at top speed and still ahve enough energy to win. And he did come in pretty close since he came in second by not that far. Smarty Jones is the superior horse. And he won the Kentucky derby in the Mud and sog and rain.

Barabro won it but the track conditions were excellent. And his leg gave way in the Preakness on a perfectly good track WHICH MEANS his legs were too fragile OR he'd been run to hard in the Derby which leads me to conclude : His legs had no ohysical endurance and he should have not passed on his genes to any mare unless she had good strong almost heavy legs.

Again I'm not saying Barabro wasn't a good horse or that he doesn't deserve the crown. What I'm saying is that his own conformation and genes failed him... In other words he wasn't perfect enough to win the crown. And I said it was something to DEBATE so I'm not saying he COULDN'T have won it I'm just syaing it's questionnable. Don't get me wrong here I supported his recovery and was shattered when I learnt he died. He was a wonderful boy but my love for him can't overshadow the facts!

Besides look at Ruffian, my favorite racing filly of all time she was running, she didn,t trip or anything but her leg still cracked in two like a twig! Her legs couldn't carry her where her heart wanted to go.

Have you seen pictures of Man O' War? You may notice he had a heavyier build and his legs were thicker. It's our own fault since we started breeding thinner more refinded horses in hope it'd make them faster. WRONG THING TO DO! Indeed if an average haflinger weighs around 1100 lb imagine a 16h very muscualr thoroughbred. His legs just couldn't carry him further. And lots of horses take 'bad steps' and that doesn't literally crush their legs.

i do know about horse racing. it runs in my blood. my daddy was a jockey so i have to know about horse racing or there would be something wrong. and i didnt say the track conditions didnt detemine a horses preformance, i said that its speed, talent and heart doesnt detemine on the track conditions. a horse either has a good heart or not, a horse either has talent or not and they are fast or they are not, i dont see where the track comes into place.
