  • Funny to see all the comments after 3 years, nearly hitting the 100.000 views. Obviously there are many many different options to tie a belt, this is just one of them, again, as I commented on the hakama tieing solution we use, it ment to be easy and practical. The reason of the last "tucking in" is that it will hold your hakama better up, naturaly if you don't wear one you don't need to do it. Thanks for all the comments anyway, regardless to your style/martial art/opinion. :o)

  • K that is so wrong its not even funny my sensei would smack you

  • @skechmasters indeed.

  • so if Obi means belt in japanese, dos this mean you are tying your belt belt?

  • @nicoyanicoya best comment on this page, hahaha

  • From my experience - Any 'Crossover' or 'Knot' in the back would be uncomfortable in Aikido / Karate because of all of the throws, backfalls and rolls that are taken.

It is the safety factor here.

  • I dont think it really matters on how u tie it as long as the end result is with the diamond shaped knot in front. I prefer not to have my belt cross over in the back but rather a single even looking layer in back but i know ppl who still tie it with the cross over showing in the back. Tang Soo Do and all styles

  • Should it Traditionaly cross over at the back?

  • it depends what style u studying cus im stuying tang soo do and we tight the obi diifferent

  • Should it traditionaly cross over at the back?

  • not aikido

  • its judo

  • i think that it's judo

  • Wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong WRONG.

    This is NOT AIKIDO.

    WRONG FOR AIKIDO.

  • thanks for help me ^^

  • i don't see why she doesn't start in the middle loop around the back then tie in the front

  • that's not aikido.....that's karate

  • thats not karate i practice karate i have been part of both accotiations first i was part of tang soo do mi guk kwan now im part of tang soo do moo duk kwan and neither accosiation ties their belts that way so if u do karate then idk what style u do bc ive never seen and any tang soo do practicioner tie their belts that way (mi guk kwan or moo duk kwan) @Draconla

  • Im ashihara karate.

  • Thanks

  • I love how people love to criticize someone else's dojo's method of tying as if they're the authority for this person's dojo. If you all are that bent out of shape, you might want to get your heads examined. There is nothing wrong with this. If your dojo doesn't do it this way so what. Oh, and the belt isn't tucked because it "becomes untied".

  • is karate better than aikido or obi?

  • nope

    different

  • Agree w/Lagook. The way I hear it, An aikido knot is flatter, so it doesnt press into you when youre breakfalling, etc.

  • i don't understand why you have to tuck it in around. it doesn't seem traditional...it's more like some bad excuse of not having to retie IF it ever comes loose.

think you could help me tho? that seems like the common type but i prefer the aikido knot which doesn't call for a continous tuck in. but i'm looking for the "gift wrap" looking aikido knot but i can't seem to find a tutorial on it.

  • I'm not sure I know what knot you are looking for but please post a link when you find it, I'm curious...

  • actually...sorry haha i just figured out how to tie it but my sensei says it's a pretty secretive way of tying the obi =p

before my classmates called it the "lotus knot" and i do believe it's from aikido...but straight to the point, my sensei was taught by his sensei how to do this knot so...um real sorry but he's sworn me to secrecy xD

plus i take back what i said up there, sounded a lil disrespectful -_- but yeah i wrap mine around from left to right, i like keeping things traditional.

  • no that is not traditional but may do it that way if their are wearing a Hakama.

  • so how is it traditionally? i mean traditional usually means clean so when you wrap it around like first before tying it is how to make it clean. oh and i added the left to right bit b/c that's how samurai would wear their armor or whatever clothing. to do it the opposite was bad luck and would mean your death on the battlefield.

but could you explain? i'd like to know =D

  • i have done 12 years of hotokan, 4 years of judo, 1 year of jiu jitsu, and i just started aikido. i have learned very traditionally and this is the way you do it when wearing a judo or karate gi. im not too sure, correct me if im wrong, but it is definitely traditional because both layers in the back, at your lower back, are lined up correctly and straight, no messy overlapping. but what do i know?

  • in aikido dont you wear the black skirt??

  • Lol, yeah, but it is optional, you dont have to wear one if you don't want to :D

  • its not after u get the black belt or something?

  • Some Dojo's reserve the hakama for post dan grading, some dont.

From talking to my dan grades, they say some things (running for example) in the hakama can be harder than not. And this formed the basis for some dojo's restricting it.

  • Yes, but you can choose if you want to wear "hakama" or not :)

  • wow, we tie are belts way different. I go to an ATA School.(American Teakwondo Association)

  • I don't know. Im in ATA and I tie my belt that way...except for tucking the ends in, that was just weird.

  • Tucking is useful because then the belt doesn't get loose when the keikogi is grabbed and you roll, fall, etc. Once you tuck the ends in won't have to re-tie the belt all training.

  • the belt only comes loose if you tie the knot wrong, hence there is no need to tuck the belt in

  • yeah right!!!!!!!f*** u

  • andaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • Muchas gracias, hace tiempo k buscaba

    un video mas claro... Saludos

  • thanks
