Dazzling cartoon. I think it was inspired by the 1939 movie The Gorilla starring the Ritz Brothers. That was some house out in the swamps for Donald to be living in with HD&L. And I am pretty sure those gorilla gloves were not on the table until after the radio announcement: pretty damn clever that. 5:14 when D leaps the table on the stilts is the graceful high point of a VERY elegant stilt run. And then the ending where tear gas releases ones inner child and bonds us all together. Dazzling
Internet search says the sign off of the guy on the radio "That is all, Breckenridge" was standard police procedure. "That is all" plus the speakers last name. The guy is not suposed to be an emcee or news announcer on commercial radio but an officer on a police band, which apparently radios back then routinely picked up.
@LadyFabiella The announcer is saying, "That is all. Breckenridge." The broadcasts were more than likely from a police radio, and Breckenridge was an officer or police chief, broadcasting on the frequency Donald happened to have the radio tuned to.
Back then home radios were capable of picking up local police radio transmissions, since they were broadcast on the same frequencies local radio stations were.
...That is why when you watch some of the old cartoons, you might see a character listening to a music program, then suddenly a report breaks in like this. MGM did it on a couple of Tom and Jerry cartoons, one where a lion escaped from the circus, and another where a white mouse that been given an experimental explosive substance escaped from a laboratory. For the latter, it was warned that the mouse would explode if hit with something.
@PatrickRsGhost So in that sense it's a bit educational a look into history. My mother was born a few years after this cartoon and we could never figure out WHAT he said at the end of every report or why he said it.
@TheBookWorm1718 That's one thing I like about the classic cartoons like this. So many gags or references to pop culture of the era or lifestyles of the era. They say cartoons aren't educational. I don't think so. Nowadays with the Internet, you can easily look up a cartoon and more than likely find trivia about the cartoon.
I imagine 60 years from now kids will be watching Family Guy or The Simpsons and need to look up references to Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, or lolcats.
wasnt this a part of like a series of shorts they did on abc family around halloween? like it had this and that scene from the sword and the stone and like a few other scenes like that? idk if im remeber it right i think i saw it when i was like five or six but i cant remember the name
@30a18 It was called "Disney's Halloween Treat" that aired back in the early to mid-80s as part of the "Wonderful World of Disney" show that aired on ABC or NBC. It featured this cartoon, the wizard's duel scene from "Sword in the Stone", the Donald cartoon "Trick or Treat", "Three Lonesome Ghosts" (Mickey, Donald, and Goofy), and a combination of three Pluto cartoons dealing with cats, strung together as one continuous cartoon. I once had it on VHS, until I broke it from watching it too much.
This is going to seem really weird, but whenever I would hear "Jumpin, Jumpin" by Destiny's Child, I always imagined this Gorilla dancing to it. Gorillas do not make good dancers.
"That is all. Breckenridge." is from a policeman. The radio is basically tuned to a police signal, and "Breckenridge" is a cop reporting to his fellow officers.
Does anybody else remember a version of this cartoon that showed Mickey hearing about the gorilla, closing his blinds and grabbing a shotgun before it cuts to Donald's house?
@JanisJoplin70sGirl Yup, but it depends! Are you only interested in this specific short? 'Cause there's a collection of vintage Donald Duck cartoons around, but since they were released years ago, they're quite expensive right now....The volume that contains this cartoon, "The Chronological Donald: Volume Two", is worth $65 bucks at amazon.com...It also comes with other 30 or so cartoons, tho
I remember when the disney channel used to play stuff like this sad really what is actually disney on the disney channel anymore ever since hillary duffs stupid show the channel has been utter shit now its full of low rate childrens shows where the actors make porn stars seem oscar worthy
If you look through a lot of the old cartoons, both Disney and Warner Brothers, you will notice that the houses were much larger on the inside than the outside.
@chop11111 It could have belonged to an American wizarding family that magically made it larger on the inside with an "Extension Charm" and later on in life sold it to Muggles that bought it, but had forgotten to break the "Extension Charm" before moving out.

when i was very young, i couldnt sleep at night cause id think a terrifying gorilla will chase me. LOL but im over that now, but i was EPIC back in da childhoods :D
Okay so was there a big fear of apes around the 30's-50's or something? I mean there were ALOT of them about or featuring homicidal apes. I suppose it might have been somewhat because of King Kong, but this, The Monster Maker, The Gorilla, The Ape Man, Murders in the Rue Morgue, Bela Lugosi Meets a Brooklin Gorilla (Lugosi was in the last three too), The Ape, Captive Wild Woman which had two sequels and so many more make one wonder. That said I love this cartoon.
I like the kids to work with Donald Duck. They don't have to be the one that cause troubles all the time. It's good to see them co-op but still make mischief.
I was totally laughing when he started to run then to the ladder, getting only two wooden poles then having boots on the bottom was the funniest part!!
Don't listen to the radio announcer when he says "you can master any wild animal by looking him strait in the eyes." Some wild animals will consider this a threat and might attack.
@ophelius111 afraid to say it is you. Your post - Don't listen to the radio announcer when he says "you can master any wild animal by looking him strait in the eyes." Definately is a classic Donald Duck cartoon. Also, I loved it at 3:32-3:35 when Donald's face turned into a steaming kettle because one of his nephews burned his tail with that candle.
I like how they named the gorilla Ajax. Ajax is usually the go-to brand name in Disney shorts (like Acme for Warner Bros. shorts). However, here it's used as the name of a monstrous gorilla.
Dazzling cartoon. I think it was inspired by the 1939 movie The Gorilla starring the Ritz Brothers. That was some house out in the swamps for Donald to be living in with HD&L. Definately is a classic Donald Duck cartoon.

Ajax was also a legendary warrior in Greek mythology, similar to Achilles. They might have named the gorilla Ajax to say he was a big mean badass.
