I'm glad someone posted this on YouTube. Now I can stop wearing out the grooves on my old Artie Shaw LP whenever I need my "Any Old Time" fix. Truly one of the best from the big band era.
Lovely arrangement. Magnificent quality of recording. Billie not only the greatest singer with a small or large combo (as we all know her) but, as demonstrated in this recording and e,g, her taped broadcast from the Savoy "Swing Brother Swing" in front of the full Basie Big Band, is a pearl, a diamond, a true revelation in front of a Big Band.
Too bad that there is so little acoustic material preserved of her performances with Artie Shaw's Band or any other Big Band.
@MrHuntersnapp Yeah, and he's a REAL DICK TOO! Shame his kind is still around........ His white kids may feel the same as him, but just wait... One of his Grandkids will come home with someone of color! And man, you can count on that happening!
Artie was so corrageous to play with Billie. It could not last long because of the apartheid in the USA. But we do have a few beautiful gems. I still have the LP "Any Olde Tyme". Artie's arrangements allowed both the singer and the orchestra express themselves. Both Artie and the final sax solos play just the melody - each with their personal interpretation. Also Helen Forest on the LP sings a wonderful contribution to this landmark orchestra/singer arrangements.
Recorded on July 24, 1938, and Billie's only recorded "78" vocal with the band; Shaw cut it again, with Helen Forrest's vocal refrain, on March 12, 1939 {that version not released until 1945}.
1938 - the only recording Billie did with The Artie Shaw Band & same year it recorded Begin The Beguine

Ive just listened to Billy Holliday and Helen Forest sing this song and the winner is
"Billie". What sultry phrasing. What Syle and Substance. Artie Shaw was a genius to put her on with the Band. Artie Shaw was the best there is !

@Iloveswing100 Artie invited her, and she said, 'What does it pay?'. He said, 'You get $60, same as me, same as everyone in the band''.
