  • Organic. Beautiful.

  • that video was pretty cool and innovative i thought. Song was great.

  • I am 16. I am so sorry for what my generation has done to music.

  • @RoomWithaMooseDash i feel the same way :( we have a few legit artists left:/<3

  • *.. The world is not myyyy hooome I'm just a passin thruuu...*``

  • I once saw someone describe his voice as sounding like that of "the reanimated corpse of Louis Armstrong." Sounds about right.

  • @captainironears A teacher of mine is fond of saying " If a hemorrhoid could sing, it would sound like Tom Waits".

  • this is one of the most beautiful songs ive ever heard

  • Only a genius lyricist can reference Hobbes. Beautiful song. Favourite line - "Come down from the cross, we can use the wood". Brilliant!

  • One of my favourite songs on the album along with Pony and What’s He Building In There? . Awe–inspiring. Magnificent lyrics too. ‘Come down off the cross — we can use the wood’.

got to say hearing that just made me feel a lot better.

  • Fantastic!

  • This song blew me away! Tom is a f*ckin great romanticus, poet, lyricsist, performer and last but not least: singer/musician! :-)

  • Yeah, I tend to cry when i hear this. But at the same time, it lifts me up above my troubles so that I can conquer them. <3

    Wonderful song, great video.

  • I absolutely adore this song. And video... Its very raw but so incredibly real. And yes I agree- tears seem to just come up listening to this. "The world is not my home I'm just passing through" Biblical but honest about life in so many ways...

  • i first heard this sung by Julia, Brian and Ash a la Rockwiz at the palais last year ...great version but not as good as this ....

  • never cried listening to a song before? wow how sad

  • A touch of beautiful cynicism around the 1.59 mark, where the tattoo reads "But there's nobody home"

  • Tom Waits -- the greatest gospel singer ever!

  • LOL

  • Cry like a baby every time I hear it. Live in Paris in May 2000 this resulted in a standing ovation and applause that lasted for over 20 minutes.

  • F%$king Incredible video.

'come down off the cross, we can use the wood"!

  • The most beautiful song in the world

  • Changed my life.

  • very, very good video ;)

  • I've never felt the urge to say this before, here it goes...what a wondeful video.

  • buried my father to this song

  • @goliattheman Christ, that's beautiful. Most musicians dream of writing a song that will get played at parties or weddings. Tom writes songs that get played at funerals.

  • @goliattheman I always said I wanted it to be my funeral song too

  • @TheRogdabod832 This song, coupled with "Dirt in the Ground" and "Cold, Cold Ground" are what I want at my funeral

  • @goliattheman oh my god.......that is very very beautiful. all i did was read your post and you got me crying. thank you. thank you.

  • @goliattheman And here I thought this song made me cry enough. My condolances.

  • @goliattheman

same thing but with my Grandma back in June

  • i was thinkin permanent marker

  • I've never watched a video so much. It moves me! Is it an official video or what!?!

  • @rmwaters it's officially creative and spectacular...

  • Wonderful. Tom Waits has been described as a 'white black man'. I know what that means. In a different was, that's me too. First language Swahili, & always was closer to the watu in Tanganyika/ Tanzania than to my 'own' people, the wazungu (white people). My video has original footage.

  • 32 people have no soul.

  • Good video!! Very clever!!

  • "Dislikes"? Are you kidding me?

  • Best music video ever.

  • Comment removed

  • If this was me in the video, i would never shower.

  • I like how he waits a few lines in to drop the "Come down off the cross we can use the wood"..... He knew it was a potent line, so It wouldent work well first or last. But just a few lines in is perfect. a true poet

  • All Waits tunes are Best-Waits-Tunes.

  • This one ties with Cold Cold Ground for best Waits tune.

  • This has been in my favorites for a long while now. Just revisited it and had to let ya know its probably one of my favorite favorites... 8p You did a great job and chose a divine song. Thanks. Ill betcha Tom has seen this...Im sure it made him smile.

  • Can I get an AMEN

  • Amazing!

  • Fantastic video, fantastic song, fantastic lyrics but yet 31 people don't like it. I'd love to see what they do like. I'm guessing justin beiber fans

  • @Krimpy10 really? never knew that O.o

  • @muzglimy Sorry that other comment was really abrasive, I must have been really drunk.

  • It's the most beautiful song I ever heared in my life. Period.

  • time and tide....

  • one of the most beautiful songs i have ever heard. these lyrics speak directly to my soul.

  • 31 Philistines who darken our door! Go back to your meaningless non-Waits whore music and cease to defile what is sacred here! YOU need to come on up to the house!

  • @GeorgeHarrysSon Yep... Soulless minions of orthodoxy!

  • It doesn't matter how many times i hear this song, it still ranks it's self in the front of the line of great songs. Along with countless Waits tunes. This man is the greatest gift from the music gods.

  • It's very suited, a brilliant video for a brilliant song

  • 30 people don't get the idea of just passin' through . . . as for the rest of us? We're comin' on up to the house.

  • is this henna? :)

this is the main reason of the skin cancer :)

  • @miki1900 Definitely paint :P Henna is brown and doesn't cause cancer, and this looks like oil paint.

  • Is that really his body in the vid?

  • Body Art ...Great Song. Ideas r what makes my world go round. Fantastic.

  • This may be one of my favourite videos ever. I never paid attention to the song till I saw this video, and suddenly the whole package just gets me all teary! Fantastic stuff!

  • Such a unique voice I can't help but love this song.

  • The Vid's awesome... love the song aswell. <3

  • Someone needs to take a bath.

  • Should I be lucky enough to have a funeral, I want this played then.

  • These are some of the most moving lyrics I've ever heard.

  • come on up to the house! btw i'm not a religious man still i'll come on up to the house.

  • i really hope that's non toxic ink... XD

  • The troll hunter

  • well done bro

  • This

  • 28 people actually like the view on top of their mountain of woe. Me? I'm goin' on up to the house.

  • Holy fuck they showed his pubes for half a second. @.@

  • die weibliche antwort (the female answer):

    "daft punk girls"

  • Come on down from the cross, we need the wood! Awesome!

  • come down off the cross we can use wood

  • fantastic!

  • first time i cried while listening to a song. usually i listen to hip hop. but thats just amazing!

  • @michelthepthong

Wow, great confession, and from a Tom fan, and hip hop fan, to you, you've just started a journey of some of the most amazing songs ever written.

Enjoy the trip! and keep some tissues near by as he can really pull out your heart and slap you around the face with it! but you will be happy about it!

  • I love this. A very talented way of getting skin cancer

  • No message, just a nice invite to a relaxing place of sanctuary. beautiful !

  • nothing like true art to compliment a true artist.

  • Well, that video was amazing.

  • This song and the video are complete works of art. You just have to think how long it took to paint all of those words on and take all of the pictures.

  • love the video!! and i think tom would too!

  • brilliant!

  • FACT!!!

  • Love the video

  • How anyone dislikes this is beyond me

  • Greatest music video of all time. If Tom Waits is in that house, i'm on my way.

  • Amazing work of art

  • 27 people don't have a house to come on up to!!!!

  • @freewheelinQ i dont have a house, it was burned down by a drunken gypsy, so now im squatting in an attic in a manor,

  • @freewheelinQ

Um......why did you go with 27?

  • its not the official music video is it? I think it should be. great song, great video!

    cheers

  • Thanks very much for post it... ;)

    Thx and ksss from BRasil

    Amoooooooo Tom Waits!!!

    Loveeeeeeee Tom Waits!!!

  • I've nothing to say. Tom's already said it.

  • Awesome, highly creative video that highlights my favorite 'recovery' song. Thanks for making this and posting it on YouTube. Helps me to keep a proper perspective on my life.

  • Great song that has turned me into a Tom Waits fan. I noticed in the comments that several people are taken with the line, "Come down from the cross, we could use the wood." That is found in the Dolly Parton movie, Straight Talk, where tells a radio caller, "Get down off the cross, honey. Somebody needs the wood."

    Great use of that line.

  • Wholy shit ....Tom is ssoooooo good at songwriting.

  • I'd rather have a bottle in front of me then a frontal lobotomy! - Tom waits.

  • correction..... sarah jarosz

  • @guyglowmore1

I hate covers and this is one of my favorite Waits songs, but she just nails this song with her version. Plus the idea of a 19 yr old artist covering Waits like that warms the heart.

  • waist is greats. love sara jah rose's version but nobody (i said NOBODY) can do tom like waitz. heard this guy on radio in 1969 in my shack in malibu on a sunday night at 3am. San Diego Serenade. wow. went out the next day and got all 3 of his albums. obviously he's still at the top of the game

  • This song reminds me of The Prodigal Son.

  • references to Jim Reeves, and Hobbes... am I the only one who caught them?

  • haha, is it possible to find a Tom Waits video on youtube without a load of witty comments saying how awesome he is ?

  • TW again is so right. We do need to get off the cross and look at the how.

  • Dirty gritty southern gospel sounds. And the world most talented songwriter crooning the truth. Where is the rest of the world?

  • @shenora1116 well, other than dylan, you're right. this man is a genius.

  • @shenora1116

Fuck the rest of the world. Leave this to those who care.

  • @tuell01 well said brother or sister, do people ever saw to you that tom cant sing properly? they really miss the point hey?

  • My heart beat is raising and there's a tear in my eye... Oh Tom!

  • Lol 2:41

    "High on tomp"

Anyway. This is brilliant. God bless TW

  • check it. this is awesome!

  • i am in love...

  • AWESOME..Great Video for a Legend....

  • Great video for a great song...

    5/5*

  • Now I don't know Tom Waits personally, but I'm sure he'd appreciate this video - good style =)

  • tom waits is sooooo awesome....love him and his music...katlin

  • i want this song at my funeral

  • Tom Waits' genius is beyond under appreciated.

  • WHAT 25 DISLIKED THIS!!!???

  • @denty110110

Now now, we must make allowances for the tone deaf... ;- )

  • This song put me on the path to religion. Not in the heavens above or from the fear of hell below but in myself.

  • Tom Waits is simply the best artist today.

  • Future tattoo.

  • I....

  • Just watched this 6 times. In a Row. Amazing. Yes, I also want my friends to inebriate themselves around my coffin and use it as a bar top. Coasters are prohibited. I also want all the ink tattooed on me. Tom Waits keeps amazing me with every new song I find (still fairly new to his brilliance).

  • woah... i wanna learn how to make a video like that!

  • 'Come down off the cross,

    we could use the wood'

I love that line so much! I see it as a dig at so many types of people, from religious to political, but in a positive way.

Great song from a great mind

  • this is the best fan video I have ever seen
