  • What a genius. I cannot bear that he is gone.

  • Sometimes it's hard to listen to Dan's genius. He would probably chuckle, say, "ah, c'mon, it's no big deal. You'll see."

    Peace.

    Rock

  • @rockinroller7 Ha you changed your mind since 1 month ago.. from big deal to no big deal. You must have seen a ghost.

  • @11xzxzxz

    Good point, and question.

Maybe I did see a ghost, given this time I closed my eyes, and just listened to his voice, 'seeing,' in my minds eye that only Dan will fully ever know what his lyrics were meant to reflect.

What I wrote a day ago was a reflection of how Dan would have tried calm all the conjecture, at least for me, as he also wrote, "Someday, we'll all understand."

Hope I've cleared things up, the best I can.

    Peace.

    Rock

  • @rockinroller7 Sure you cleared things up and Dan might have calmed us but for me, personally, Dan didn't clear anything up with "someday we'll all understand" and just added to the mysteria.

  • @11xzxzxz

    I can understand that also.

Perhaps it does add to the "mysteria," for you and others as well, just because Dan wrote we will understand, it was only his belief.

    Peace.

  • Wysteria. What can you say! A poem sung by the artist. Like Steinbeck, Fogelberg touched places in heart and soul not easily reached in the hustle and bustle world.

  • my favorite song on the album.

  • Does this bring to mind The Tale of Genji for anyone else?

  • Haunting tune written by a master craftsman.

You are gone, but most certainly not forgotten,Dan.

  • Three Years ago ~ In memory of Lizzy Fleming

This song is dedicated to the tragic death and memory of Lizzie Fleming at 16 years of age. Contemplating Suicide? 1-800-273-TALK

  • Dan had a absolute fascination with ghosts. He thought of them as good people, not evil, or bad. This song is most likely about a female ghost named 'Wysteria'. That she was asking someone questions about her boyfriend going out with another person. For example: "Did you go to the Fair Park?" and "Did you meet the people we met?" were questions about her memories dating him and her going to the fair, talking to people she met, and etc.

    Have a great day.

  • its creepy cause my name IS wysteria

  • I grew up with him. I've forgotten how he felt every song he wrote came from a deeper place......The commercial songs were not his best. They did not represent what he was about.... This song came very close............

  • reminds me of CSN way back when ...

  • My favorite part is did you change your face again that those of us who loved you can't even find you. So much plastic surgery - perfect! I also love the are your lips still lily white - do they just bloom at night and die at sunrise. I have known so many women that this is absolutely perfect for them. Makes me sad. Dan, I will always love you and no one will ever take your place.

  • The tone of this song touches a place in all of us, I believe. It is hard to believe Dan was around 19 or 20 when he wrote this. Amazing!

  • I could never understand where my grandparents got my mothers name, Wisteria, but maybe its from this song, its beautiful, just like she is. Thank you for putting this up, i'll have to show my mother and grandparents and aunt. My mother is as beautiful as this song, and i love her.

  • Fantastic! God bless you Dan.

  • This has always been one of my all-time favorites of his. Wore the grooves out on the vinyl when it first came out. My roommate always thought it was about vampires, as we were both reading Anne Rice at the time. Loved all he ever did. Sadly missed. Great video. Check spelling, though. Believe it's Wysteria instead of Wisteria.

  • I have a question. I believe that this song is ostensibly about a young woman. Why then in this video are there so many images of naked men? That seems incongruous.

  • Because the story is told from the male point of view.

  • @TageKaliandrino With respect, I appreciate your posting of this song, and your "Vision," or interpretation with the video.

Some 40 years ago, while listening to this for the first time, I had a vision of a young man, fully clothed, from behind, looking out a window, while sitting at a desk, with a pad of paper on the desk and a pen in his hand, as if he were contemplating how to write a letter to Wysteria, a former lover, thinking how to ask all the questions in the song.

    Peace.

  • Oh, my god! This song is very beautifull per excelence! many thanks for sharing.

  • Gorgeous song - very, very nice photo collage

  • stunning piece beyond words in emotional impact.

  • This song is dedicated to the tragic death and memory of Lizzie Fleming at 16 years of age. Contemplating Suicide? 1-800-273-TALK

  • My favorite Dan Fogelberg song!

  • what a great video. You have done some great work with Dan Fogelberg's songs!

This song is my all time favorites from his earlier works.

Thanks Dan for sharing your talent with us. Your songs will live forever more.

  • beauty

  • Thank you Tage! If this doesn't tug at your heart, you're not human!

  • Dan for me was a master song writer; particularly 1972 to 1978. He took many harmonic chances.... THAT WORKED!!@! A good example here is his use of the second in harmony. I admit, I used it myself.

  • Absolutley beautiful! Both song & your gift of presentation. Stunning!

  • Tage,

You are remarkable. The first house I bought when I moved to Big D had a deck on the back completely covered in Wysteria. It would bloom in late April or early May and the fragrance was nearly intoxicating. This song is not sad to me. Every time I hear it, it reminds me of the times on the deck of that house making great memories with folks who would become wonderful friends and are still in my life today. Thank you. I love what you do. I am truly blessed through it.

    Daniel

  • This is simply beautiful. You have "left a

legacy" to a special artist. Only the good........what a loss in such a chaotic world.

  • The name Wysteria came about when Dan was in a shop that sold Incense when he was in college. Wysteria was the name for the incense fragrant. Wysteria is about a dead woman. Very haunting melody.

  • Hey Tage,I still enjoy this everytime I watch it.You are so cool. God Bless you.

  • For me, the "Wisteria" personification is a metaphor for the remoteness of intimacy. She embodies an untenable dream, a desire to reach out unmet and unfulfilled.

"Wisteria" is as well incapable of returning intimacy, therefore she cannot touch anyone, is ethereal, a passing specter.

  • Stunning piece of music and lyrics; so beautiful and haunting and poignant.

    Fogelberg is a genius.

  • I always liked this song- but it has such a sadness to it. I've been reading a lot of interviews he did and whenever he was questioned about the meaning behind this he always said- he wasn't sure, it was late and he was "under the influence" and it's about a ghost named wysteria. It's pretty funny to read the story behind some of his songs as often times he had no meaning - he said he always wrote the music first and then the lyrics.. whatever he meant by it - its a very pretty song! thanks!!

  • This song means alot to me,I never got to say thank you to a man that got me threw some hard times in my late teens. I'm in my 40's now. I will always love him, I think about him and especially listening to Dan. I thought I seen him in walmart one time. Ill never forget you EVCamp. Thanks for being in my life.

  • Great job Sarah.

Question for Wysteria fans? This has always been my favorite DF song. And like another poster said, I took DF's lyrics and made them my own - they seemed so fitting, regarding someone I once knew. 'Haunting' is my best description of this trac. What about you? How did/do you interpret this song?

  • You were probably addressing this to everyone else, but I interpret the Wisteria as a comparison to a love that was very beautiful but that lasted such a short time. Wisteria itself flowers for about a month or so, it is very beautiful but gone very quickly. I might be wrong, but that is partly what it reminds me of.

  • Tage? I'm so sorry. WHY was I thinking you were Sarah????????? So..great job TAGE!?

For me, Wysteria is the story of a beautiful, seductive woman, But she's scarred inside, sadly, and is unable to give, or feel the same love in return.

  • Beagleheads, it is me "Sarah". I just took my name off my profile to avoid the "whack jobs" addressing me by name. They seldom bother to go to the profile, but if they do, then they see my name as simply "Tage".

  • Gotcha!

btw...I found an online interview with DF - it started driving me crazy, and I've ALWAYS wondered, so I Googled it.

Anyway, he said the "strange song is about a ghost, a dead woman."

But like every song, it speaks to everyone differently.

    Thanks, again!

  • Unfortunately to some degree Wysteria is all women. I've known several who's stories are so tragic they can never trust again...

  • True.

  • When I was a child my parents had a yacht on LAke Texoma nad Dan was the music of choice they would use his music to entertain others. I was young then and he quickly became my favorite, I am now in my 30s and still love his music, and will forever love his music. He will always live in my heart. Dan you are the best of the best and I miss you with all my heart! I love you Dan, but my all time favorite is one of your lesser known pieces, "Long Way", There will only be one musician for me, you!!!

  • I knew this girl (of course, someone like her) and I loved her intensely but futily. The people in Dan's songs are so real and the characters so fully developed that you often find someone in your life that fits perfectly, and think: "Finally, someone can say what I feel"

  • Dan was the master storyteller... that's a big part of why so many loved him so much.

  • Your videos are so beautiful. I cry every time I see and hear them. I know his every published song. You images are such a perfect match and tribute. Please don't stop... I check back all the time to see if you've done anything new. You are a light in the world! If ever you get around to it... I would love to see how you'd interpret his song,"The Last Nail." It has special meaning for me as do your others.

Love and light to you Sarah!

    Darlene

  • Hi Darlene. Your gracious comments moved me very much and I thank you for them. I will certainly try to do something for The Last Nail. Oddly enough, I have never heard that song before, so it will be interesting to see what it is like. Take care, Darlene.

  • "The Last Nail"

Thank you for recognizing what only hearts can feel.....

    Judi

  • Obviously a special song for me as well. That song was playing at one of the most painful moments of my life that worked out OK in the end. I always feel like Dan was there at the 'sad part' saying, "I know how you feel, but it's going to be alright..."

  • I so love this video....my favorite Dan song of all time, there are so many. You have done a beatiful job absolutely. What a way to honor such an artist. Dan is smiling.....

  • What a cool video! I'm sure you did Dan proud. Bless you.

  • How Utterly Disrespectful! Too busy to look at the play list were you?!

    It's titled: Wysteria

In addition, Dan's lyric's were such that they evoked their own individual images in ones minds eye. As I am certain he wanted it to be. Or, he would have created his video vision of Wysteria.

He was an artist y'know, a poet, not just some rock n roll flash in the pan with nothing of substance to share.

May You Rest in Peace my Dear Sir.

  • Jubalish. What an absolutely disrespectful thing to do: to come here and say what you just said. What a revolting display of bad manners and even worse, utter disregard for everyone else's right to honour Dan Fogelberg's music in the way that they see fit. If you are so certain that there should be no video version of Wisteria (I will spell it how I damn well please!) then why the heck are you even in here watching it? Don't you ever speak to me again.

  • I think Dan would be very pleased. Keep honoring his memory the way you have and ignore the trolls. Peace

  • Thanks, Sydserious. Peace to you and yours.

  • AMEN SARAH!! You're the best ( :

  • you joined just 1 day ago and 1 out of the 4 videos you've seen sofar, just happends to be a video made almost a whole year ago?? your comments are way out of line! and it looks like you just have a beef with Sarah's videos

for some particular reason? just knock it off

and try to act like an adult!

  • Wow jubalish--boy have you got it wrong. Sarah (or sir as you've called her) has done BEAUTIFUL videos to DF music. She has more depth and soul-as you would see by her vids- than I imagine you could ever have. Boy, have you dissed the wrong person. Try to do some research before you let the comments fly. Ya got it wrong!! BB in FL

  • oops-sorry about the "sir" comment-didn't understand who jub was talking about--was too p.o'd about the video comment. Anyway-give em hell Sarah..BB

  • OUTSTANDING video!

Well done...a fitting tribute to Dan's creativity. I like to see you take your best shot at the title track from "Netherlands".

  • Thing is that I have been asked to do a few dan videos. I did "As the Raven Flies" and "crow" at the request of many people and yet they are both struggling for views. I really don't see the point of people asking me to make them and then not even bothering to watch or rate them. Especially the song "Crow" it was incredibly long and an arduous process finding all the images and then compiling them. Took roughly seven hours.

  • As a result, I am only making vids to the songs now that really inspire me or lock into my imagination in some way thus giving me an idea of what I want to put to the song. But I love Dan's music and I am particularly fond of Wisteria, To the Morning, Lonbely in Love, Ghosts, Sketches and Dancing Shoes. All of which I have already made videos to.

  • What a wonderful video. You have really complemented this beautiful song. Thank you and may Dan RIP.

  • listen to the words of this song ....thimk about what he wrote...He is an artist we will never see again ....GOD BLESS Dan

  • this is one great song, love it. Remind anyone of "Guiniverre" by CSN? Dan was SUCH a great artist and performer. He connected with his music at so many levels.

  • This is one of the great songs of the massive amount of creeative song writing from the 1970's

  • Excellant! Very moving and well done. Thanks for a fabulous tribute. Love and miss you Dan. My heart is crying purple...

  • Magnificent

  • there isnt 1 post from anything off his "phoenix" album ...im stunned that was by far his most ambitious album ever ???

  • I don't know why, but I did not like the Pheonix album. That came out in 1980 when I was at Berklee

  • Beautiful ... I got some albums of him ... great singer ... and actually I didn't knew either that he's gone ... such a waste ....

  • Tage, awesome job! Godspeed Dan.

  • the great one's always seem to leave us too early!

  • Wauw Nice clip and sound/song GREAT TageKaliandrino !!

  • Thank you, Tage, for expressing your inner artist to Dan's music. For me, his music emobodies my firt love and now, they embody the last days of my husband's journey with cancer...This imagine evoking music and poetry is like the pided piper of my memories when love was young and so was I....

  • This is my favorite track of Dan Fogelburg. Thanks Ron! I did not know that Dan had died.

  • I knew that. What a voice, he will be missed dearly in this household. Always dreamed of getting a gig in his band, next lifetime.

  • so sad to hear of his passing. this is one of my fave tracks of his, i get goosebumps listening to it, such a beautiful soul crafted this song and he will be missed.

  • How I will miss this poet. One more lost, but never to be forgotten. He trully talked to all of our souls.

  • My sister's life was saved by his music. Listening to it now I realize how much he meant to me too. Her name before she was married was Tammy Lawder.

  • What an instrument for the muse in word and music! Another poet gone from us and it leaves my generation with one less. He left us wonderful reflections of our hearts and thoughts. A tribute to our generation....

  • "Wisteria...are your lips still lily white, do they still bloom just at night and die at sunrise...." His songs will be his legacy and his words/his poetry will never fade.

  • Dan peer deeply early on in his writing.

  • Yes, thank you...he truly had a gift to be able to write so poignantly and peer so deeply...

  • I'm sitting here at my PC pulling up songs and getting lost once again in this huge talent. My God...the man's lyrics and music are so moving.

I remember reading in the liner notes of his 4 CD compilation that at the time he wrote this song he had no idea what "wisteria" was. He saw a candle or incense (cannot remember which)with this fragrance at a head shop back in the day. Funny...

    RIP Dan.

  • I remember being all foggy eyed and listening to this album over and over..back in the day. I envision Wisteria to be a woman that could not be had by anyone..

  • Wisteria - a climbing vine that is particularly flexible and used for basket weaving and for making basket handles. The moral of the story - men need to get their prostate checked along with colon.

  • He died Today at 56. He will be missed.Great singer and writter. Loved his music.

  • R.I.P. Dan. What an authenic artist; more concerned about the music than all the frills of the music industry. Respect, and you will be missed. Bobbi Humphrey

  • Stars from Home Free is a great song-Is it posted anywhere?

  • Do not know. Do a search and you will know for sure.

  • Hey folks I have a lot of Dan on c/d...including this album. Let me know if I can help you out.

  • okay thanks!

  • "Wysteria" is on Dan's first album "Home Free", released in 1972, also available on cd.

  • If you want to find the song itself, it is on Dan's cd "Exiles," which was released in 1987 I believe. It's available on cd, and you can find it on Amazon.

  • I am uploading the one I just made, "Lonely in Love" should be available in about ten mins. Look under my name, as it probably won't officially list until tomorrow.

  • This was the song that endeared him to me. I was surprised to run into it here.

  • Thank you for posting this;Quite Lovely,Captured Angel and Homefree, could someone please post more from these albums???

  • I would if I could find the songs or the albums. I have a friend in Canada who can locate almost anything, so I will ask him. I will post to you, Scottish when I manage to post more.

  • Thank you so kindly.I have most of his albums,records...Someday I'll make videos,I have so much fun watching them.

  • You should make some, its lots of fun. I love it, as is evident by how many I have made!

  • Fucking amazing. I love this.

  • He was only 19 years old when he recorded this, right? It is so fucking beautiful.

  • TageKaliandrino - my many thanks to you. This song is so beautifully hauting and moving, and your video is absolutely, breathlessly wonderful. You've captured the Yin and Yan of love in the pictures you've chosen to acompany the song and the way you transition them throughout. Thanks for sharing!

  • Thank you, 4evertexan. It is nice to hear what people think and how the vid makes you feel. Glad you really liked it.

  • Posted another Dan Fogelberg one today, if you are interested. Just click on my name and look at my vids, it is at the top.

  • Wysteria,Windows & Walls, and Whispers in the wind... a trilogy of tragic Love songs...All about the same woman....? Perhaps so...

  • It reminds me of the one time in my life where I adored a man and he didn't even know I existed. Ha ha ha, sappy but true.

  • Thanks for the beautiful song and video...watched it twice! I'll definitely be looking for the other videos you have posted.

  • Posted another Dan Fogelberg one today, if you are interested. Just click on my name and look at my vids, it is at the top.

  • Even though I made this, I still find it sublimely haunting.

  • TageKaliandrino, so beautiful! I just subscribed. Found you when I was looking for 4 of Fogelberg's songs on album "THE WILD PLACES," (1990)

Aurora Nova,The Wild Places,Bones In The Sky,The Spirit Trail. The good stuff is always hard to find!

    Rush 7/18/2007

  • Thanks, Rush.

  • Beautiful... thx

  • Thank you:)

  • Watched this again and was impressed all over again at the sensitivity of the images. Thanks. Rosy

  • Thank you, genuinerose:)

  • 1st Fogelberg song I ever heard...way back in high school. thanks for those gorgeous evocative images that somehow captured a lot of the mystery in the music....awesome job!

  • Wow. That brought back memories. I was searching for song videos from his 1972 Album. Since his portrait was sketched in black and white on the album cover, it was a good choice to use mostly black and white pictures with occasional other colors...purple being my personal favorite. Perhaps you could do another one with his song, The River.

  • Great song. I love all of Dan's stuff. I wish there had been a video of "The Reach."

  • Have posted a new Dan Fogelberg song. It is called To the Morning. Look under 'more from this user' and you will find it if you want to see it.

  • Thank You!!! I must admit I closed my eyes and listened.....and ENJOYED!! how about a video for Song From Half Mountain??

  • Song From Half Mountain Rulz.

  • I stumbled over him when working on radio in the late 60's and have been a fan ever since even though he's not well known in Australia. His lyrics are wonderful. Rosy

  • You really know how to compliment his wonderful lyrics with your pics. Rosy

  • Thank you, Rosy. I do enjoy his music, especially in this day and age, which seems to be filled with a lot of of hip hop/rap junk culture music. He reminds me of what music once was.

  • There's a lot of anger in much of today's music - wonder why that is exactly - anger that is focused outward. Fogelberg's lyrics are poetic precisely because he is unafraid to look inward for his resources ie leader of the band - his love and respect for his father. Every 'era' seems to express something about itself in the music it favours.

  • Thank you, Rosy:)

  • Haunting ! Excellent !

  • Cool. I would very much like to see them if you do decide to make them.

  • Hi Kalispirit, yeah, it was supposed to be that way so it is good to know that I got it right. I love his songs, they are all filled with muh meaning, all seem as stories, not just songs for the sake of a song. Do you make any vids?

  • No, I haven't made any videos, but I enjoy watching them. I've discovered some very talented folks here.

Videos of Dan's music are rather rare. Your videos just might inspire me. You never know.

  • Nice job. This is a sad one....haunting.
