In the 6/8 section, its not a hemiola, so the accents are every 3 notes for like 3 or 4 bars then there are no accents...
3. Dont be scared to play soft and really go after the piece.
4. It looked kinda like you were focusing note-to-note. Think about the bigger phrases.
5.Mallet choice. Your choice wasnt bad, it was just a little too "thudy" on the lower notes. (I realize that you need some harder mallets for the upper register, jsut saying they could be a little softer.)
Im learning this piece now. So these are some of the things that I had to work on when I play it, and some of them apply here as well.
1. In the Chorale section, dont think of each individual roll as a phrase. The phrase is two bars long in most cases... The easiest way to phrase is to sing the piece. It will show you where the natual crescendos and decresendos are, as well as breath places, where you may not necessarily want to connect a roll...
Thanks for all of the criticism everyone:), and im glad you all like my video. I understand their are a lot mishaps their should be accents on the double lateral part in 6/8 i believe? lol i just never got it down before i posted this video. Also there are like a couple of ritards that i missed. thanks none the less:)
i think this is the best vid of this piece on youtube that i've found. great work! i do have one concern though. its about the interpretation of the 6/8 sections after the measure of 3/8 as in measure 28 and 38. every video i've watched, plays it in the interpretation that this video has but when i look at the music its not the same.
dang u played it real good! im learnin this piece too, but my left hand is not so great, and seein how this song goes, idk how ima be able to get it to sound like that with a retarded left hand
I love this piece :) played it at States my junior year! Definitely a fun piece, only criticism would be to maybe switch to a softer mallet (at least in the left hand) during the rolls section, and of course switch back afterward (sorry, i don't remember measure numbers)
Awesome with getting through the piece, it's a tough one to memorize. The ending could have been way more dramatic than what it was in this video, and your tempos sometimes a little unstable. A bit more confidence in the really intense parts because if you aren't confident with your hands going where they need to, you'll hear it. But if you are you can hit one wrong note max and not distinguish it.
I would recommend bringing out the accents after the strummed chords. I forget which measures, and I can't find my copy of the piece, but it's 8th notes in 4 with an accent every third note. If you bring out the accents, it'll set the groove more and the switch from a triple to duple feel will be more drastic. Without the accents it just sounds random.
well when i played it at State the judge told me i was playing it to fast and i played it at tempo at state lol. So i slowed it down for the video and yeah there is a lot of mistakes in this video not going to lie.:/ I missed that rit. I know my bad lol
What happened to the rit. before the left hand ostinato starts?? And it just kinda seems...too slow. Don't get me wrong though there's a lot of good too.
ohh its all good haha i bet youll get it once school starts. I start college in 2 weeks im excited. I just purchased Four rotations and Chameleon by Eric Sammut i love his compositions they are so good look him them up:) if you havent lol:P
it really is! i havent had a lot of time to work on it because i got it at the end of summer semester. and im in drumline camp right now. and full band camp starts in a week, then school starts back.
sweet!:) i like that piece by Daniel Berg its very beautiful sounding. This piece is really fun though you should definatly try it out:). Its composed by a Professor at TCU Named Richard Gipson
