I think it looks awesome! It's quite impressive what can be achieved with a voxel engine. Unfortunately I have only second and third hand info, so I have no idea why this was dropped in favour of the old mode 7 engine. But then again I don't think the original concept was strong enough to do the same game with a different engine, instead of using the time to make a game that is more appropriate for the hardware. I guess it shows what a good deal Nintendo made when it sold Rare.
@Jensererer I have a theory. I forced music to play during the racing sections, and the music was slowing down along with the frame rate of the game. I can't see any other reason why, it's a hell of a lot better than the released version. The tracks work fine without music though.
@Koolboyman Yes i remember it being slower when there was music playing. Then again, we likely didn't even any music by this point! (apart from the title theme)
so wait... why didnt the full realese look like this? Looks much more professional than the full game which only had super mario kartish 3D tracks and a still image as an BG.
@RobbanFoxer Coz its slow as hell, as you can see when more than 1 planes are shown on screen. And the render pov is hilarious, you cannot see more than half of screen, it looks really unplayable
Voxel engines are usually much more recursive than polygon engine. But this is not a full voxel engine, is just more like the Novalogic voxelscape for Delta Force series, just a lot of heights based on voxel-stuff
@trople i bet this cannot be optimized much than this, this is not a work of days, this is a work of months. GBA is very limited in order to run a voxelscape landscape, there are some operation with heights that GBA cannot handle well
@9esferas1 I was talking more about the plane handling!
Yep the voxel engine was already pushed to its limits, I remember Rob saying he was hoping to get the voxels to 30fps excl. gameplay (I think it was around 25 on the boss levels).
@trople yeah, its hard to belive but who knows. with voxel build out the plane handling isnt bad but the framerate is terrible and circuits are so close
The game is real block.

In the end, it probably did not perform well enough and meet the standards

@9esferas1 Remember this is note even a beta build, still running on unoptimised code.
