New IP's are what establish the base, and the sequels are what fine tune it. Nothing really goes perfect the first time, it's why games get patched over time. Without the new IP's the Sequels would never exist. New IP's mean innovation. HOWEVER at the same time, if we ONLY did new IP's there wouldn't be godly good games like Halo Reach, and Mwar 2. It took 6 CoD's to get that good.
And Portal has the most widely spread video game meme's that I know.

You don't have great sequel gameplay without the original. Let's see Bioshock, Mass Effect, Halo, Call of Duty 1, Assassin's Creed, Guitar Hero and Rock Band. It's undeniable. There is a reason a number two is at end of that product.
well i think if a new ip is successful enough the developers should capitalize. however one should always remember the sequel is not always better than the original. think about it. I am an avid metroid fan. That being said. Metroid 2 the return of Samus is the worst of all the games. its not until Nintendo came out with Super Metroid that the original splendor came back. So i say, new ip. then the sequels. but only if they can be as good or better than their predecessor.
New IP's won Kail anomonoc ( Yes I misspelled) Probaley just supported the sequals and thats the reason why sequals won in, fact I have been counting and dead pixle and Matt have won everytime if not near everytime (have not memorized which people one for fact) while Scott and justin have not won once if not barly at all.
You can sort of do both. Take a look at the Final Fantasy series: they've been running strong for two decades now, but they're constantly doing new things with each subsequent title to keep the gameplay fresh. They're not just redoing the same formula over and over again. In fact, with FF XIII, the entire battle system is going to be real-time; a first for the standard Final Fantasy game.
Developers need to realize that there are no "immortal" games. They NEED to do new things, even in sequels.
NEW GAMES, I mean sequals can be good but without something new and original they wouldnt have gotten anywhere. If we we were only doing sequals we would still be playing 2d side scrollers
I prefer sequels. Trial and error keeps games alive and fun. I mean, You have to have a first to have a second, but after you get that first one in, make a second. Second third and so on games tend to be really fun.

I think you need a mix, but more sequels to get it right. You don't need an amazingly new idea to have a good game. The first resistance I thought I'd love, but I didn't get on with it. Resistance I adore. They just needed time to iron out the kinks

Some new games aren't good at first but sequels fix whats wrong with the first idea and improve on what was good and what was bad with it to make it an even better game. Like Assassins Creed for instance.But you can never let games get stagnant so you bring up a new idea and you create the whole cycle all over again.

It really depends on your perspective. The MORE IMPORTANT games are the new IPs because they freshen things up, they start something amazing and the sequels build upon that and make them more amazing, and make them a lot more fun. Sequels are better, but new IPs are more important.

Both are important, it all depends on how you set the game up. Assasins Creed, OF COURSE ITS GOING TO HAVE A SEQUEL, LOOK HOW IT ENDED. Its a story game, story games build opon their predecsors by continuing the story and improving on the others faults. New IP's are great too, pretty much saying, if your last game wasnt set up to have a sequel and you have a good idea for a new game, make the new game. Simple as that.

We need both, new IP's are important to keep gaming fresh and interesting, my GotY's are Borderlands and Dragon Age and both are new IP's (okay, last year it was Fallout 3 but it was my first Fallout game), BUT good games should get a sequel or two, I would love to see Borderlands 2 and Dragon Age 2, and I can't wait for Mass Effect 2, ME1 was my GotY 2007, and a new IP.
And for me, L4D2 and MW2 are just not worth 60 bucks, but I will gladly pay that for Bayonetta and ME2.

@TheKavehKazi ok this may not be a full sequel but more a spiritual succesor since it was made but a different company then the original is Red Dead Redemption based on Red Dead Revolver the first one pretty much blew ( in my opinion) but Redemption is so much better than the first

@dosdeydey Im not saying its a bad game, it was fucking beautiful to even my standards, but I personally like the way gta 4 flows compared to RDR, plus it just feels better, I say has more to do rather than just more minigames, but again, I havnt beaten the game (Split it 30/30 with a friend) so Im not in any postion to be judging it.

I honestly just want good games lol. Theres a bunch of great new IP's and theres a bunch of great sequels. But on the flip side of the coin, theres a bunch of crap new IP's and a bunch of crap sequels. I'm up for both sides of the argument so long as i get to play good games

I think you need a mix, but more sequels to get it right. You don't need an amazingly new idea to have a good game. The first resistance I thought I'd love, but I didn't get on with it. Resistance I adore. They just needed time to iron out the kinks

I cant vote cause i mean, without out sequels, we wouldn't have our mw2, l4d2 and ac2. I mean the biggest games around currently are sequels, but thats also because of the hype their getting. but then again we need our ips cause i mean games like brutal legend kick fucking ass, and stuff like border lands. then again brutal legend is probally gonna make a sequel anyway.

New games are what set the basis for the sequels. Some new games aren't good at first but sequels fix whats wrong with the first idea and improve on what was good and what was bad with it to make it an even better game. Like Assassins Creed for instance.But you can never let games get stagnant so you bring up a new idea and you create the whole cycle all over again.

It really depends on your perspective. The MORE IMPORTANT games are the new IPs because they freshen things up, they start something amazing and the sequels build upon that and make them more amazing, and make them a lot more fun. Sequels are better, but new IPs are more important.

Both are important, it all depends on how you set the game up. Assasins Creed, OF COURSE ITS GOING TO HAVE A SEQUEL, LOOK HOW IT ENDED. Its a story game, story games build opon their predecsors by continuing the story and improving on the others faults. New IP's are great too, pretty much saying, if your last game wasnt set up to have a sequel and you have a good idea for a new game, make the new game. Simple as that.

For an example let's look at hell's highway shall we? Okay, when pitchford showed the game to us on E3 2006 or something it looked brilliant. He loved talking about it, was all exited and shit, and when it came, it was NOTHING like the E3 version. They had DOWNGRADED the game and made it suck balls. Borderlands is great. IP BABY!

We need both, new IP's are important to keep gaming fresh and interesting, my GotY's are Borderlands and Dragon Age and both are new IP's (okay, last year it was Fallout 3 but it was my first Fallout game), BUT good games should get a sequel or two, I would love to see Borderlands 2 and Dragon Age 2, and I can't wait for Mass Effect 2, ME1 was my GotY 2007, and a new IP.
And for me, L4D2 and MW2 are just not worth 60 bucks, but I will gladly pay that for Bayonetta and ME2.

the companies that make the huge games that are awesome and make sequels should make new games. In many cases those will become sequels because they were that good. One point i have is that bungie should make a new game not halo related. I love halo but i bet they could make another kickass game

they already are making a non Halo related game, they said that after Reach they wouldnt be maming anymore Halo games, however other compinies will be begging to make a new one since its already got a giant fanbase. So weather theres another halo game after reach its not going to be by Bungie.
