We are living in the illusion of Bollywood. Slumdog brought focus to Mumbai's under belly. It created dialogue about the poor and unprivileged. Most of Bollywood capitalizes on wishful thinking of the average Indian dealing with topics such as wealth, love and fame. People are getting caught up with the image. The truth is India is a third world country and it is in your hands and mine to change it. I am not a misinformed westerner, but rather am a student with my roots deeply sunk in indianess.

Slums exist everywhere and in every country no one wants to depict them in film. In USA there are slums just 3 blocks from the White House in 3 directions. They are shown in films and documentaries, but if not from here people don't know that. So what? That's the reality of life all over the world.

This was a book. The flim is based on the book. Danny boyle is telling a story of these three people show suffered extreme poverty . Its not a story of middle class india. This is a movie and its based on a fictional book.And you cannot deny some of the stuff in the movie isn't true( beating the kid, child kidnaping etc). Problem with Slumdog is, they put in all the horrible things about India and bundled in one film. Well, there might be a case wehre orphan kids are blinded, or amputated to make them beggers, but it is not at all a common thing in India, while slums are a reality, all the negative things are highlighted and west obviously wants to buy it. Evey country has such things if anyone want to make a film just on negative aspects.
Good grief it's not ALL horrible- it's a wonderfull uplifting story about a heroic character. This IS a story about a kid who comes from the slums, life IS hard. this stuff makes excellent stories and every society has these places. It's not a negative view or one society looking down on another. We all tell these stories about ourselves. Have you never seen a Dickens film, les Miserables, the Godfather, City of god???!!!

True...its a good movie...but only reason its given a global recognition as its made by a NON indian director. Specifically to make the Americans feel better as portrayed by dialogues such as "Let me show you the real America" (woman handing money). It sure shows the slums and is very very good story. This was a book. The flim is based on the book. Danny boyle is telling a story of these three people show suffered extreme poverty . Its not a story of middle class india. This is a movie and its based on a fictional book.And you cannot deny some of the stuff in the movie isn't true( beating the kid, child kidnaping etc). What people(from england my friends) took away from the film was the characters resiliences to situation. they do understand that not everyone is like that eg rich being evil

And that's where the culture and diversity is I reckon. Also, there's poverty everywhere...but it is bad in India. When I went there, it was so hard to get used to. But you do in the end. Hello Elfrania....Who says that we are doing nothing to eradicate this problem.....this is a problem to be sorted out by both the government and the citizen....From my side i am sending foreign currency to India....India is far more changed, what it was 25 or 30 years ago.....but still many things are needed to be done.....this is not about the development...this topic is about portraying India in a negative sense........which i am very much against of.....

It's going too slow. India is a giant with both feet tied.
There are too many slums, if the director intentional hunt for them, i have nothing to say, but it is prevalent, hence he's not over stating. It's the truth. so let's face it together, and work together on it.
I have high hopes in India, and I am glad u share my views. But 1st let's get rid of corruption and wasteful production, they are the slums creator.

Problem with Slumdog is, they put in all the horrible things about India and bundled in one film. Well, there might be a case wehre orphan kids are blinded, or amputated to make them beggers, but it is not at all a common thing in India, while slums are a reality, all the negative things are highlighted and west obviously wants to buy it. Evey country has such things if anyone want to make a film just on negative aspects.

Good grief it's not ALL horrible- it's a wonderfull uplifting story about a heroic character. This IS a story about a kid who comes from the slums, life IS hard. this stuff makes excellent stories and every society has these places. It's not a negative view or one society looking down on another. We all tell these stories about ourselves. Have you never seen a Dickens film, les Miserables, the Godfather, City of god???!!!

You're right, but it's not meant to be a documentary in any way, it's meant to be a fantastical storytale. Also Slumdog Millionaire shows India's rise out of the poorer socialist License Raj era of the 80s and into the more free current era where much less people are living in poverty.

ur right positive sides of india could have been shown too in the movie .I know the movie was abt slums to show the sad reality of india for indians to do something out our country, but personally I was disgusted by some uncalled scenes like the part where the kid jumps in the pile of dump! Wut the hell? I was disgusted while watching that myself. I hope future movies on india also show the beauty of india including rich history,temples, exotic places as well!

Ya i know I was so disgusted when i came to know about the remake of 'old boy' and 'bittersweet life' - two of my favourite Korean films - Bullshitwood aka Bollywood has directly uplifted each n every scene, even its narrative!!! They have done this so fucking badly to the extreme that, it just shows how low n futile they are in their creativity- taking pride from other people's work- fucking tossers!!!

well just so u know , all the cast and crew are indians and the director was all the time advised by an indian co-director......Danny did a brilliant job as far as film making was concerned but the film has a very bollywood like feel to it..u cant deny that and yes you havent seen any good films i guess....
