@girotube And when building this kit, I picked GSCW as the base BECAUSE of the kick (and to a lesser extent, the crisp hi-hats). So yeah, apparently a good
kick mic with some good recording and careful editing can turn a tiny floor tom into a BEAST of a kick sample :D
@brandonbush1 For the Hi hats (Sabian AAX studio) I used the overheads to sample the hi-hats. Shure KSM 109. no direct mic on the hats.. The tom toms I sampled them with the AKG C1000s and the snaredrum I did Sen 421 mkII on the top and SM 57 on the bottom. All samples are pre-EQd'. On the Full HALion 2.3 sample format I put double hats on different octaves and some cymbals crash - rolls. The samples are 4 years old.
@girotube : Must have been a pretty nice room to get such sharp hats with no room noise using just the overheads. I've never used the KSM 109's though, so maybe they're particularly good at rejecting reflections coming from behind the capsule. And that's an interesting mic setup for the snare as well. 57 on the bottom, sure, but I'd normally think of the 421 as a tom mic. Worked great though...maybe that's what I'm hearing as a nicely rounded mid range on the snare.
hahaha! This Giro the creator of the GSCW drum samples you are Playing on your controller...! I'm Glad the mapping on the keyboard worked great for you!
The original Library I made it on HALion 2.3.5 and some good frinds from the KvR forum made the sfz format convertion.
The drums are.
Kick:16x16 yamaha (floor tom into bass drum)
Snare drum: 13x6 CustomWorks. You can see this one on my channel
@girotube Sweet! Thank you so much for giving us all such great samples! I made a lot of modifications to the mappings for what you see being played here, but that's only because I'm SUPER picky about my drum mappings. However, in other personal recordings I use your kit and mappings virtually verbatim, and I love 'em!
This channel seriously needs more attention. I don't know if it's an alternate channel or what, but two videos isn't enough. MOAR!!! Every time I see an ocermix video, I take the link here and watch this video. And every time koopa beach starts playing, I can't help but dance to it a little bit. And after every time I watch it, I give it 5 stars. You really have a unique skill, and I want to see what else you can do with it. d-_-b
I love the sound of your snare, I have both the GSCW kits and the ns7_free kit. I'm assuming the snare is from a different sample?
I have various drum vsti's and soundfonts both free and commercial and haven't produced a snare as great as yours. Recently got myself NI's Battery 3, a great program indeed, recorded drum samples...not so great, but being able to import soundfonts and tweak them like crazy is a plus.
Is there a secret to get that kind of snare sound?
I've updated the info with a link to the SFZ file that I used. If you don't already know, an SFZ is very similar to a soundfont, only much more versatile. It is still a free format and I'd think that Battery should be able to load and edit them. If not, simple free vst players like "SFZ" (what I'm using) get the job done.
So with the "MyCombiKit" sfz , you should be able to try out the same snare as I have. I believe the EQ was flat on the kit, but I did have a good amount of compression and 3 instances of dominion running, each with the high freq excitation set to max at frequencies of about 5k. That really helps the snare bite through the backing track, which was essential here. Normally, I'd stick to one dominion instance on the snare. That's enough to give it some character without sounding out of place.
I have both sfz and sfz+, not sure if you remember me but I used to go by the name of HyperKnight32 on OCReMix and you first introduced me to the gscw kit. Battery 3 is only able to load sf2 and not sfz, but Dimension Pro supports sfz and the majority of instruments used are sfz.
I discovered the link only links to mediafires homepage. I found it on a topic you posted on ocremix linking to the same kit, just change the file reference to zmgqhttzdmy .
I have a memory like a slow goldfish when it comes to real names...nevermind screennames :)
I'm still on SONAR 6 SE, which means no Dimension for me, but I'm planning an upgrade fairly soon. I got really jealous playing with a friend's S7 a little while ago, and now I have to 1up him and get S8
Oh, and thanks for pointing out the error in my link. Should be fixed now.
yeah, *if* there were enough trigger pads, they would be good for getting some really subtle flams and rolls. But my first instrument was a piano so I'm much more at home on the ivories :)
So can you play real drums? I was laughing at how your beats are cooler than the beats I play on the real thing. I gotta learn the Secret of mana beat you were playing.
I play real drums just as well as most real drummers play keyboard drums :) I got a snare practice pad for my birthday though, so I'm practicing with that. I'd love to get an electronic drum set if I ever get the money/space.
Haha, cool. You got the right sense to play the real thing though, so go for it. I found my electronic kit on craigslist, so you might want to keep an eye there. Saved about 200 bucks that way.
Also the rubber pads that most manufacturers use are very insensitive--they are not nearly as sensitive as velocity-sensitive keyboards (as long as the keyboard is not weighted or semi-weighted, since piano-weighted makes it impossible to repeat the same key very fast).
The keyboard is an Axiom 61 midi controller. That means that it doesn't produce sound on it's own; it can only trigger sounds from other devices. In this case the device is a free set of drum samples loaded into a piece of software called sfz.
Bravo! You should do more of these.

This is so cool! I love this song so much, I've been trying to play it on piano but it's so much better with drums.

I recorded the kick samples with the Beta 52a I still can't believe how well it came out! LOL its a tiny 16x16 floor tom I converted to a kick drum..
Enjoy...

KSM 109 are super or hypercadioid if I remember correctly...
The kick and snare were pre-amped with the DBX 586. Lots of tube beef..
