......lost the 1992 general election. I preferred Major's more moderate political stance, within the party. He established a rapport with Dublin, & was at least prepared to communicate with the rest of the EU. Of course, signing us up to the Maastricht Treaty wasn't one of his better ideas. Will he best be remembered for the infamous motorway "cone hotline" he set up, or the legislation he introduced compelling all new appliances to be fitted with a plug???!!!!
Not before time, either - remember it well. Ok - only a few cabinet members: notably Ken Clarke & Michael Hesaltine had the guts to tell her that it was time to stand down, but only because she was so forceful, that most dared not challenge her authority. The majority of Britons were thoroughly fed up with her, by now. The poll tax riots said it all - a large section of society had been ignored and neglected by the Thatcher govt, for many years. Had John Major not emerged, they'd've certainly...
Funny how they all called for the 'party to come together', yet it was this event that led to them ripping themselves to pieces over the next fifteen years. In a way, they've never gotten over stabbing her in the back.
Labour has done much more damage to the UK than Thatcher. Cold hard fact. In times with too many taxes, too much European interference in national matters, done by men who were NOT elected by the people, and of course the "wonderful" euro we need leaders like her. Time will agree with me.
Every single problem in society today stems from the Thatcher era. We have had time to sort them out but Major, Blair, and Brown are all Thatcherite scum
@19STU84 Its funny, every Labour leader after John Smith has openly admired their deep respect and admiration for Margret Thatcher. When your held in respect by both your own party as well as the leadership of the opposition it really demonstrates what kind of Prime Minister you are. Even after she resigned the electorate still wanted the Torys.
All the problems in today's society stems from Labour's13 years in power. Thatcher is without a doubt our best post-war Prime Minister.
@alexsau91 Attlee was the greatest PM ever. He gave to the majority the welfare state and the NHS. Thatcher took from the many and gave to the few - her rich cronies. Soon the people of this country won't have anything because of Cameron and Clegg. Welcome to serfdom.
@19STU84 Attlee was such a great PM that the electorate favoured his predecessor rather than him. Thatcher won 3 elections. Thatcher defeated the trade unions which had held the country to ransom and caused the downfall of both her Labour and Tory predecessor.
Prior to being elected Britain was practically bankrupted to the extent that the IMF ran the economy for a time in exchange for their loans. Thatcher was elected and it changed. Before Thatcher the UK was reputed the "Sick man of europe"
@alexsau91 Well you may rejoice at the demise of the Unions but without them we would have no rights. Maternity leave and pay, holiday entitlement, minimum wage, the NHS, Health & Safety Act, Equal Pay, Equal Opportunities etc. They all come from campaigning from Unions. Without Labour and the Unions we'd still be sending 6 year olds up chimneys. The Tories economic record is also patchy (see Black Wednesday).
@19STU84 The Conservative economic record may be patchy, but when compared to Labour's it's pristine. The British public may trust Labour with the NHS, but constant polling proves that they trust the Conservatives with the economy. But then just look at Labour now, the arch-deficit-denier as Shadow Chancellor.
And I rejoice at the demise of the unions that could stop the country at a moments notice, encase you haven't noticed they still exist, infact this week is the TUC conference.
@alexsau91 Churchill was such a great PM in the eyes of the electorate because he made sure we won the war. Had Attlee been in power during the war, then people would have loved him just as much as they loved Churchill.
In fact, in the five years of the 1970s Labour government, the unions only really had a major strike in the winter of discontent.
Part of our bankruptcy was due to Mr Heath's actions and the world oil crisis at the time.
@AidanLunn I'll tell you how. Thatcher sold off the majority of social housing to people like your grandad on the cheap so he could then profit on it when he sold it. That house was then in private ownership and poor people had one less house to have the opportunity to live in. Times that by thousands all over the country and that is why we have the current housing crises where young and poor people can't get on the housing ladder. It was a short term vote winner.
@19STU84 That's not a fault of the right to buy scheme though. That's a fault of where Ms Thatcher chose that any money made from council housing should go - not into building new ones.
The reason why we have a lack of affordable housing is because sales agents or mortgage lenders have extremely high deposits - it was that way before Mrs Thatcher even got into power!
@alexsau91 All the problems stem from Thatcher. Why do we have parts of the North that are now unemployment blackspots? And have been since the mid-80s, during which time the PM was . . .
Those problems might have grown under Blair and Brown, but they *started* under Thatcher and Major.
@AidanLunn No, all the problems do not stem from Thatcher. You give one example and that some how constitutes proof? But then that's philosophy of anti-Thatcherite's: if theirs a problem, it's Thatcher's fault.
Most problems stem from the 13 years of Labour, the current government is having to make heavy cuts because of Labour's irresponsibility with the economy. Labour choice of Shadow Chancellor demonstrates that they have not learnt their lesson.
@alexsau91 You still haven't answered my question. I don't give one example - I give one example for every community North of Nottingham that hasn't recovered since 1984/85. Both Thatcher and the NUM were jointly responsible!
And the choice of shadow chancellor is purely Ed Miliband's decision, his shadow cabinet wasn't chosen in a ballot, it was entirely his own decision.
Though I must say I did desperately want the Tories to oust Balls - that would be another bad stain out of Labour!
Personally I'm thrilled at Labour's two top men; it will certainly make it easier for the Tories to get a majority in 2015. To think they could have had David Milliband and Yvette Cooper occupying the two top positions - two people who may have been able to connect with the public and restore British trust in Labour's handling of the economy.
And the Tories wouldn't oust Ed Balls, he's their secret weapon!
@alexsau91 This question, that I posted earlier: "Why do we have parts of the North that are now unemployment blackspots?"
It might make it easier, but the current behaviour of the Tories will still make it difficult whenever the next election is called.
No? They tried to in the last election, remember? Ball's majority in the end was only small for a high-profile politician, somewhere between 1,000 and 2,000 because of a concerted effort by the Tories to get him out. I wish they had now!
@alexsau91 I very much doubt it will be as late as 2015 when the next election comes, if they left it that long then Labour might get back on track and become electable again. I'm only guessing here but sometime next year the coalition will be broken up and we will have a general election. Then the Lib Dems will get wiped out totally, Labour aren't yet ready so the Conservatives will win a majority.
You really are a pathetic little creature. If Norman Tebbit had announced he would dance on the grave of Michael Foot or Nye Bevan, the Left would have have collapsed into fits of apoplexy, and yet many of the Left feel perfectly free to wish death upon an old woman because you disagreed with her politics. That is the mark of an authoritarian mind.
Bully for you old boy... I am amused enough to slightly worry for you, though you probably want none of my sympathy, as I am a cold, calculating right wing bastard who burns babies in German forests for my capitalistic demon Gods. Smells nice
@1984ioc I have no idea who those people you are talking about nor do i care.Beautiful terminology though. My sentiments for wishing her an excruciatingly slow painful death have got to do with her role in the North of Ireland.I'm pretty sure you are an expert on the situation though aren't you so no point explaining to you or should i say convincing you of the horrific desicions that effected alot of people there.I'm also pretty sure 100,000s share my view of her all over England and the Union.
Thatcher was a arsehole like most Tories selfish and in it for the wealthy, same as Cameron he tries to be cool and down-to-earth but a tory is always a tory, Labour arent much better like controlling and monitoring all of us, we need a liberal goverment that has minimal power over the public, we dont need to pay people to tell us what to do, which is what they seem to think they are there for, protecting us from ourselves so to speak
The Liberal Democrats are scum. They are the dirtiest election campaigners, even worse than Labour. They lie and smear their opponents instead of engaging in positive campaigning. The only reason the Liberal Dumtwats want PR is because they will never be able to gain the trust of a majority, so they want power through the back door. They insult opponents by calling them gay or fat. They lie. They offer misleading statements and statistics.
LOL. Kinnock says it is good news and demands an immediate GE. What so he could loose yet another one. Now he drips with EUSSR money. What an arsehole!
Thatcher didn't ruin this country you idiot! What she did for new business and the common market means you are living in a country with choice. Jesus, under Labour we are taxed to shit. Labour are not socialist, they are worse than Thatcher ever was.
@amaya8182 hang on let's be fair what government did we hall poll tax riots in 1990 also what government signed our economic powers over to the E.U.
They were both by this woman Margaret Thatcher yet also you go on about we are taxed to shit but how started council tax anyways Maggie i think personaly you need to get your facts right before you start saying Labour are taxing people.
You think Crash Gordon is a better Prime Minister, do you? At least Thatcher wasn't cosying up to the Americans and putting CCTV on literally every street corner whilst deliberately destroying the economy.
He alone is my main reason for not voting Labour next year. He was forced to resign under Tony Blair but Crash Gordon welcomes him back with open arms... arsehole.
I hate our government. It was mostly fine under Blair, why did Gordon Brown and co. have to fuck everything up?
Believe it or not if it wasn't for Margret Thatcher you would be using euros by now and Britain would have been changed forever, thr British Pride and all that, so think before you speak.
Thank God For Thatcher. Look at Britain Before and after her Premiership. The Winter of Discontent and now another Depression to look forword to. Thatcher did more for this country than Old and New Labour combined.
recessions happen whatever government is in power as we are now seeing, plus if her cabinet had not twisted her arm, we would have not have gone into the ERM, ie, no black wednesday.
Vile, evil, snobby, conceited woman. Look at see New Labour, you see her DNA. Even now, if I hear her voice, the urge to turn over the TV overwhelms me. I'm getting miffed just typing this - URRGGGHH!! That witch did major damage in my teens, I and a great deal of the UK's population (former mining villages, steel towns, maimed Falklands veterans abandoned upon the scrapheap etc.) will gladly tramp 'nuff dirt upon her grave when she does the decent thing and dies - soon, I hope. URRRGGGHH!!!!
'Evil Snobby Conceited Woman' Look Who's Talking. I've Seen Your Websight. The Reason New Labour Was Electable was because it had her D.N.A. Get it into your Thick Skull that the Class wars are over. Old Labour is Dead because the people - THE REAL PEOPLE WHO VOICE THERE OPINIONS AT THE POLLS - Dont't want another Winter of Discontent. Whoops, Spoke to Soon - Step up Gorden Brown and the Next Winter of Discontent.
Your 16 Years old. What are we going to drink, Lemonade shandy? What the fuck do you know about that Thatcher years. Stop repeating what you heard in the Schoolyard and think for yourself.
Oh behave yourself, as the son of two people who were hit hard under the reign of selfishness and greed she imposed by her proud battles with the unions (not to mention the Falklands) Im more than permitted to have my say.
Her "right to buy" policy for council houses in the UK is the single worst policy ever introduced, why do you think there are currently shortages of suitable and affordable housing?
Take less time worrying about someones age and look at case studies and facts.
Thatcher resigned in 91-92 Dumbo. You can't hold her responsable for the state of housing now. We've since had ten years of New Labour. Gorden Browns economies fucked the country up. You should remember you would have been about six when Labour came to power.
ok so a 16 year old may not have been arround at the time..... but neither were u during world war 2 and a lot of other history that i bet u have oppinions on..... quite apart from that where do u get off being nasty to a 16 year old....... sounds to me like u r still in the school yard too

Thank God For Thatcher. Look at Britain Before and after her Premiership. The Winter of Discontent and now another Depression to look forword to. Thatcher did more for this country than Old and New Labour combined.

Look at it during her Premiership. 3 million unenployed, poll tax riots, unions destroyed, recession.
dartaddict 3 years ago
Moved us into a recession and black wednesday and gave us poll tax! Thanks for that! Thanks for nothing more like.
mellowNdark 3 years ago
recessions happen whatever government is in power as we are now seeing, plus if her cabinet had not twisted her arm, we would have not have gone into the ERM, ie, no black wednesday.

Stop repeating what you heard in the Schoolyard and think for yourself.
stewartkee 3 years ago
Oh behave yourself, as the son of two people who were hit hard under the reign of selfishness and greed she imposed by her proud battles with the unions (not to mention the Falklands) Im more than permitted to have my say.
Her "right to buy" policy for council houses in the UK is the single worst policy ever introduced, why do you think there are currently shortages of suitable and affordable housing?
Take less time worrying about someones age and look at case studies and facts.
Milhouse92X 3 years ago
Thatcher resigned in 91-92 Dumbo. You can't hold her responsable for the state of housing now. We've since had ten years of New Labour. Gorden Browns economies fucked the country up. You should remember you would have been about six when Labour came to power.

Wasted all the UKs`oil money on carrying out political vendettas. And then sold off UK assets on the cheap.
Margaret Thatcher was the exact opposite of a patriot.

Her one fault was being friendly with tyrants like PW Botha and General Pinochet. But she saved the United Kingdom from self destruction.
