anything with such small opening is hard to hollow---hard, meaning risky for catches---and if this feature helps you out, i think you can turn it into success.
i just use bowl gouge and fingernail gouge (and some other kind of gouges) to get the hollowing done on these kind of shapes; but, again, risk of catch is high in my way of turning.
Google "Captured Hollowing Rig" and you should find a few examples. Basically it is a fixture that lets you hang a tool well over the tool rest, without much drama, as in the tool catching and causing a bit of trouble. The rig holds the tools on the exact correct angle and does not let it turn or twist when contacting the inside of the piece you are turning if you to my homepage 3dubya DOT ablett DOT jp SLASH workshop SLASH hollowing_rig DOT H-T-M
I don`t understand why you use a hollowing rig,The time you spend adjusting it is wasted time. And the laser, again why??.learn proper tool control and then you can enjoy the process and you can sayI MADE THAT with my own hands.
KB44, I do a lot of different things to get the results I want, some work well, some don't, it is called "Learning"
I don't have any kind of a Mentor here that I can go to and learn from, I just have to figure it out on my own. Sorry my attempts at sharing what I have learned, do not meet your standards.
Hi Stu,Sorry if I sounded too critical that was not my intention.I too am self taught, (moved from england to Switzerland) took up turning and couldn`t find one single club or association here.
So I bought all of Richard Raffan`s books and taught myself. I just reread my comment and found it too sharp and for that I apologize.
I hope to see more videos from you thanks for sharing.I tried to post this apology on the tube but it kept saying I had too many charachters,so if you know how to post it please do so ,it`s only fair that if I criticised you publicly I must apologize publicly.
