The first album that I heard was Boxer and then I heard Cardinal Song (Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers) which is now one of my all time favorite songs. Their Virginia EP and Cherry Tree albums have some really great stuff on it. I would say that all of there albums are excellent apart from their first album (self-titled "The National"). So I would probs start at their latest stuff and work backwards from there. Just my opinion though. Hope it helps :)

I'm dying to hear the new record. Love the drummer, I think the bassist usually plays a fender P-bass of some sort. I, personally love the telebass style P-bass that it looks as if he's playing now. They sound incredibly tight. Make all the comparisons you want...but I believe they still stand apart from everyone else in my mind. It comes from the Devendorf rhythm section. I have never heard beats and fills that match their magic.
