every time i hear anything from the new album, i get so excited that i think i start to experience a mini panic attack.... i don't know if the national makes me want to jump for joy, or vomit... maybe both :)
@themaizeandblue- boxer is a downright amazing album, start with that, then alligator. i personally love their old album also, i havent listend to much of sad songs for dirty lovers. but this album coming oout is going to be one freaking amazing one also. just keep in mind that everything they do is good or amazing
The first album that I heard was Boxer and then I heard Cardinal Song (Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers) which is now one of my all time favorite songs. Their Virginia EP and Cherry Tree albums have some really great stuff on it. I would say that all of there albums are excellent apart from their first album (self-titled "The National"). So I would probs start at their latest stuff and work backwards from there. Just my opinion though. Hope it helps :)
Oh wow. It seems like they're one of the few bands that actually get better with each album release. Equal fav band along with Radiohead. Can't wait for High Violet!
Sure there are songs out there which alot of them are awesome, and you are really excited about the,. But after a while you forget them and trust me you WILL forget them... This song is just so pure and perfect you can always listen to it no matter where you are and i can't wait till High Violet realeses. You never forget theese kind of great songs.

I don't usually get into bands, but these guys are totally out of hand. I cannot believe how consistently excellent their music is. I've been listening to this one for the last 3 days pretty much like RainMan watched Judge Wopner.
i'd love to watch a video of just the drummer playing a full live set. awesome how his playing and writing is so tastefully & creatively busy yet his head hardly moves.
@InMarleyWeTrust-They may not have been on the cover of NME or be on the play list of Radio Bland, but i can assure you that The National have a a big fanbase here in the UK-hence why their RAH gig sold out in a matter of hrs.....:-)
@TheConstellation72 ok, fair enough, but based on what you've just said i take it that they're popular with a slightly older audience, because in my sixth form no one has a clue as to who they are.
All this pretentious claptrap about music theory or who was a fan of The National first is quite sad and impressess no-one.There are 2 types of music.Good or Bad.The National make good music.
Great song.. People always seem to mention Boxer and Alligator, I think sad songs for dirty lovers was even better than Alligator, not forgetting the debut and the eps..
@ ptpwener It's not so different from what they did before at all. It sounds like Mr. November and Fake Empire had sex and this is their child. Echoes of Abel are also in there.
This lot have been my favourite band since Alligator came out and I wish them all the success in the world, because they deserve it. They're bloody fantastic.
This is a poor statement in both the immediate and implied senses. They blew up with Boxer - if you're talking terms of success - but if you're talking song structure, then you obviously haven't been following this band that long and have a pretty poor grasp on music theory.
no its not... and if you are quoting "music theory" than you have absolutely no clue what music is... this band still rocks in all regards. but there is an essence to a relatively unknown entity that defines a person. people dont want to define themselves as other people. music is more an identity...

I've always thought the best music (or any art for that matter) is the kind that successfully conveys deep-rooted emotions and is at least somewhat original.
Many things are brilliant in this band but the drums may be the winner to me. I am so relieved to see that they apparently have no intentions of reinventing themselves as a band but just keep up with the amazingly high standard from their two previous albums.
while i hope this record does well, and the band gets some good press, i dont really understand the whole "finally the national will get its due". havent they been loved since boxer? Didnt paste name boxer best record of the year in 2007? Havent their songs been featured in a ton of tv shows? Any indie press is frothing at the mouth waiting for anything the national. this band deserves all it receives, but where were all you the last few years?
Well said my friend....Personally,they've been one of my favourites since 'Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers' and it does amuse me the notion that they have just been discovered.Obama used 'Fake Empire' before his victory speech, they've opened for REM,played numerous european festivals and sold out RAH in a matter of hours.Just because they're not on the cover of NME doesn't mean they are a struggling band...

So pissed I fell asleep before catching this last night. One of, if not my favorite band.
I'm dying to hear the new record. Love the drummer, I think the bassist usually plays a fender P-bass of some sort. I, personally love the telebass style P-bass that it looks as if he's playing now. If I had the cash I'd buy one in a heartbeat. In addition to my Aerodyne. Maybe someday I'll be able to afford the Fender Squier Vintage Modified Telebass.
They sound incredibly tight. Make all the comparisons you want...but I believe they still stand apart from everyone else in my mind. It comes from the Devendorf rhythm section. I have never heard beats and fills that match their magic. And Matt's voice melt's my world...the song has a foundation set in what they do best layering in beautiful sounds one on top of the other until....climax! Gratz on the success guys, take it to the top! Peace and Love.
