and now for all you that are about to blurt out that i'm saying indian music is the same as jazz or rock and roll.
I'm not. I'm saying that the learning process is not different. Jazz and rock sound like jazz and rock because they operate on a grammatical system. to learn any musical style effectively, one must learn the grammar.
penta15786, All music can take a lifetime of learning. It's like science, not a fiction novel. Of course there is no end to what can be produced.
Just because, to us, it's "eastern" music does not make it harder to comprehend. it is music with a grammar and syntax, no different than jazz or rock and roll. It just has to be learned properly and studied.
@ColoradoBansuri I fully agree with you. If you start studying western music, it takes also a life time. You discover tha ancient harmonies, then the classic harmony then the contemporary harmony, then all the styles that going over all the harmonic rules and so on.
The music is a infinite world: western as well as eastern. I think that more than concentrate on rues to learn, people should start or better to re-start to feel just the music inside them. It doesn't mean to neglet rules. ;-)
i have a question, i'm about to buy an electronic tampura, so is there any "brand" or suggestions you could give me before buying it... wht kind of things should i have in mind before ordering one, thank you very much..! "saludos" from mexico city
Any musical instrument should be as easy as beating on a drum. What I must suggest to take into consideration, is the fact that if you like music or playing any instrument, just imagine that you can do it; I guarantee you it will come to your soul much easier.
Playing sitar is not about learning welcome to the jungle. Buy an electric sitar (6 string, standard guitar tuning, buzzing bridge) if you want to do that.
LOL yea but if you already know how to play, set a cool goal that the people watching will want to get there, and are therefore motivated to get a sitar.
But why do that? The Sitar is renown for its sound and music, Everyone who hears it thing "India" and not "Slash". If you have a unique instrument, play it uniquely. Don't play what everyone else plays.
almost all of the spellings use the same pronunciation, and it doesn't mean every other spelling is wrong. It's hard to get one specific way of spelling when translating from a language that doesn't use our same characters.
Try the lark in the morning website. They sell all types of indian instruments as well as many other types of ethnic instruments. They have good guitars too.
Actually, "cave 82" it can be spelled tamboura or tanpura as well as other variations, seeing as they are both Anglecised and are not in Urdu or Hindhi.
tanpura are mostly for raag singing and would be for having you voice develop as well.

Indian Classical Music takes a lifetime of learning and then finding out for your own self the amount you can discover.
She knows quite a bit but it does not mean she knows all.
She is offering sound advice to novice or to somebody who is just getting ready t walk into ICM.

Try playing famous american songs on the sitar, like the intro to welcome to the jungle by guns and roses and other songs
then other ppl will be interested
this is just basic sitar tuning notes
play some raags and saregams, then show that you know how to play iit well

good video explanation.
its funny how people below cannot appreciate the information being given and act plain stupid themselves by being narrow-minded.
and it is 'taanpura' as pronounced in the video, not tanpoora or any other weird pronunciation offered below.

Yo, do the pillows and blanket come with the sitar or something? You sitar players always look so frickin comfy.
Chase55 5 years ago
Considering to play the sitar you have to be in a half-Lotus position, I think the player wants to be as comfortable as possible.

Nice. Now I have a good basis for composing such music. Reminds me of the bagpipes. A constant bass note plays with a melody working off of it.
