In Kirby's dreamalnd 3, he was a creature born without the ability to harness happiness. He had the emotion could not truly feel it like others. That happy emotion turned to rage and he soon started to attack Dreamalnd. Kirby beat him and the outcome, had Zero's eyes burst out and die. I think the scariness/serious factor in Nintendo games comes from contrast. In games that have relatively kiddish things thrown into the mix (such as Kirby 64) when you get to serious, emotional parts they're even more poignant.

Anyway, when you are playing a scary game, you EXPECT scary things to happen. Sure, when a ghost pops up out of nowhere or something freaky as shit happens, you jump a little... But throughout the whole game you know that something scary is supposed to happen at every other corner, so you expect it to happen, and you aren't afraid of it.

Nintendo games, on the other hand...
