  • Is that some Wurth HHS on the shelf behind you? Awesome stuff.

  • Thank you! Did this last night for the first time and got em perfect on my first try

  • Does the car have to be cold or warm while tuning the valves?

  • great video man!! I was wondering what could my engine has? some times when I push it hard its stars to sound like a squishing noise like metal vs metal thing?? and then,,, its gone when its cold out,,, driving me nuts dont know what it is

  • Great video!

  • Can't wait to leave school! Wouldn't mind a job in motersport mechanics

  • Thank You. Now i know how to do it..

  • @Ranger0861 You're welcome, good luck and thanks for the comment.

  • Love your stuff Eric! Watched a lot of your videos, learned a lot. Just work on some euro cars :) like ford fiestas haha! Keep it coming - watching from the UK

  • @Smurf2k I just posted a video today on a Fiesta, in fact I think you're going to like the next few weeks stay tuned.

  • @STFUDouchebags I worked on these cars for year and I've owned 5 of them. Thanks for the comment.

    and?!!

    still dirtY

  • @marsL001 I love your comments, thanks.

  • I noticed that the Acura manual suggests rotating it a certain degree(45 deg I think). I'm guessing all that matters is that you rotate the cam lobes so they are pointing up and repeat for the rest of the lobes with the feeler gauge.

  • @strivingit Yes that is correct, make sure you are on the 'base circle' of the cam lobe.

  • Eric is seafoam good for a vehicle.

  • @hp11208 I've never used it in one honestly, I've used it in my lawnmower however and it worked great.

  • of course thank you very much Eric for

    - your time, effort and sharing your knowledge with others .

    - your great skills of making videos and editting it .

    - your way of simplifying doing things with special "Made in USA" tools which i love from the depth of my heart or with classic simple tools .

    - your good looking workshop from every angle .

by the way where is your workshop ?

and what camera you are using to mak these videos ?

  • @edebawy Thanks very much for that comment, made me smile. I use Sony HDR-SR11's and I edit with Final Cut Pro. My shop is located in Mason OH now which is different from the one in this video that was in Cincinnati. Thanks again for the comment.

  • Thanks for the video, I need to adjust a few noisy valves I have on my "rebuilt-by-me" Subaru motor. Has about 60,000 miles on the rebuild, and had the heads done professionally so they were adjusted perfectly when it was put together, but the valves have become a little chatty lately. Probably going to have to lift the motor to get to the valves. Clearance in the engine bay with the boxer is major PITA. lol. Thanks again.

  • @bluefox4848 I was not aware that you could adjust the Subaru valves but they are not something that I work on all the time. Thanks for the comment.

  • Ffuuudoiiiliiirzwoeeoeiwqqqqq1ysbdbfshsehshdsssssww@@@@zhEfjdj/l/aljfrtdsq?kkjx

  • Hay eric after working with b and f honda Ive relized that you can use or sub the b and f setting they are very simler except for the f22c way differint

  • Bro this video helps me in my auto tech school, cuz we have engine need to be Adjust, so I'll ask the instructor to take the duty :) thanks & stay dirty

  • @roro560v8 Awesome, good luck in school.

  • Just a recommendation on this. When I was starting out and didn't know much I did valve adjustments on my car and it would drive me nuts! Basically the same specification as you listed .004 intake, .007 exhaust. But I didn't have exactly a .007 on my feeler set. So I doubled a .005 on top of a .002. DON'T DO THIS. The oil between the feelers will add .001 to .002 extra. So instead of what I thought was .007 is now .009 - .010. It makes a HUGE difference. Use the EXACT feeler guage.

  • @youtubasoarus Yea you never double up on feeler gauges to get a reading. Thanks for your input.

  • The best & easiest way to do valve adjustements, IMO, is to use the go-nogo method. Put in the feeler gauge that's one step larger than what you're supposed to use. When that absolutely doesn't go in, you're good.

What makes valve adjustments so tricky is that when you put a feeler gauge in, chances are, despite your best efforts, you're going in at an angle, an angle large enough to make a loose-fitting feeler gauge feel tight when it's not. There are other factors that cause false readings.

  • @170324341a Hence the reason practice makes perfect, I consider this an acquired skill. Thanks very much for your input.

  • Sweet video. Very informative.

  • @savage217 Thank you!

  • I never thought to do valve adjustments on my CR-V until I heard about an issue with the engine seizing in CR-V's. I now do them about once a year.

  • @hoopfan71 I've never heard of an engine seizing due to not adjusting the valves.

  • @EricTheCarGuy Sorry, I misstated the issue. It was actually burned valves.

  • Hey Guys,...make sure you have the factory Firing Order in place....better be Safe is always a good discipline!!! :)

  • @sprydo7 Good tip, thanks for your input.

  • would this be the same as doing the valves on an f22 from a 92 accord?

  • @mraccord92 No, I actually have another video just for that engine, look for it on the videos page of my website under 'engines'.

  • One thing to keep in mind, some hondas have Inch measurements and others have Millimeter measurements.

  • @jvsee12345 I've always seen both listed.

  • Is it correct to think this should be done on a stone cold engine?

  • @offspringy On a Honda yes, but on many other vehicles it should be done hot, follow the service procedure for your vehicle. Sorry I didn't mention that in the video.

  • Ooooohh my god i cant say how glad i am you made this video. Ive known my valves are a bit loose and i have chilton book for my car, but to actually see it done helps alot more than the book. Thanks eric.

  • @munoz4415 That's what I'm here for, to pick up where the book leaves off. Thanks for the comment.

  • That tool looks pretty handy! i might have to get me one!

  • @tylertlc It's a must on the VTEC engines.

  • Do you know where I can find the specs to do this on a Ford? Great video!

  • @SD457500 Honestly most other engines are hydraulic valve trains and don't require adjustment. Honda is of the few that does not use hydraulic lifters.

  • This was a big problem with 97-01 CR-V's. Too tight from the factory. If you have one, get it looked at soon.

  • @LeakyDiaper I did not know that, thanks for the info.

  • When i did this on my 1st bike I made it tight enough so that the slide went in, but the next biggest size didn't. I never got to see whether i did it right... it wouldnt idle well, but it was because the carb hoses were leaking air and I left at the mechanic in hopes of finding the prob but just readjusted vavles and didnt do jack, a 2nd guy helped me diagnose the prob.

  • @Bulgdoom Yea you have to be careful, you're better off going loose than tight.

  • Eric, I am getting very concerned about the grey whiskers in your goatee. Are you getting enough sleep? Vitamins?

  • @bhstone1 I'm a 41 year old grandfather, it comes with the territory. :)

  • Eric we have the same magnetic parts tray from Mac Tools!

  • @YotaFan1 It's like we're brothers! :)

  • hi eric great video as always! got a question! i have a honda with b16a2 engine,in your expert opinion :P what would you say is the best cost effective - performace upgrade you could do? thanks

  • @DonHumbostoni Honestly start with a good set of wheels and tires. Steal braided brake lines, then do a header and intake. That is good for a start anyway.

  • Great points made in your intro, Eric! It IS a developed feel. I'm still trying to get mine right. You're really on top of stuff. My dad told me that it's good practice, even for an expert, to grab a feeler gauge, & adjust a Mic to that setting, then feel the drag. He's a 40 year machinist, so I tried it & passed all of my school work. Woa! We just went OLD skool! I'm surprised you own a tool for it. We have junk sockets welded to flat stock steel with a hole in the steel for the screw driver.

  • @JTheGuitarPlayer Your dad is on the money with that one but I wouldn't expect anything else from a machinist, those guys are hard core. Always good to see you in the comments man.

  • @EricTheCarGuy Great to see a YT Celebrity staying in touch with the Fans! So I've been thinking about one day starting a car channel of my own. Call it "J's Garage" or "Jason's Auto Shop" something like that. Any tips?

  • very nice video, cant wait to give it a try.... gona watch this video about two millions times before i try it though

  • @corsie1987 Watching the video is only part of it, you really have to get in there and 'feel' those clearances to get it right. Good luck.

  • i think this wil be easyer on my gm 3100 XD

  • @kolby4078 You're funny.

  • @EricTheCarGuy is that a no? D=

  • hey Eric Im from New Zealand I always watch your videos just wanna know why most the cars you work on are hondas, If you can do some ford v8 or nissan turbo videos would be good. but I still like watching them even if they are honda cheers mike

  • @carpetmantis Mostly it's because that's what I'm known for, I'm actually an Acura master tech so most people know me for those cars so I get mostly Honda's into the shop. I'm working on changing that however as I'd like to have more variety in my videos too, I don't want them all to be about Hondas as there are a lot more cars in the world. Thanks for the comment.

  • The lifters on my 2000 Suburban are really noisy, but only when the weather is cold. It's an old vehicle and we've been putting up with it for years. Is the only reliable solution to replace the lifters? How much would a set of 8 lifters cost?

  • @spelunkerd 16 lifters actually, 2 valves per cylinder, you would need to replace the cam too as they are a matched set, a good opportunity to upgrade the cam if you asked me. You might consider using thinner oil if you are running something thicker than stock or what is called for by the manufacturer.

  • Respond to this video... actually i thought i read somewhere that its normal, as well as a 01 4.8..

  • hey eric! do you think you are able to make a video soon about changing the valve stem seals on a DOHC honda engine?

  • @davidzzz94 Not without an engine to do it on, that would make a good video however.

  • the engine just would not stay on. and did the proper testing, to find the IACV to be at fault. so I suppose I am do for a timing and valve replacement/adj??

  • @nicholas0142003 You also might want to check out the video I did on solving Honda idle problems but the J series had issues with the IAC's so that's a good possibility. Also check for vacuum leaks.

  • hey Eric: love the quility you put into your videos. I have a j30A1 with almost 250k not sure the last time the timing belt was done but the valves a a wonderful symphany of cam ticking. and when in neutral and you give it alittle gas when the ideal come back down, the other goes really low in rpms then right away comes back up. This does not happen when in drive. just when free reved. Wondering what kind of issue that might be. IACV has been repleaced but not becasue of this issue.

  • @nicholas0142003 If someone adjusted the idle screw that could also cause an issue like that, if you post this question over at the forum I'll give you the 'idle speech' as I wrote out a whole thing on idle issues for questions just like this.

  • You need to use the special tool for the VTEC.

The adjustment nut is too recessed to use the flat wrench/screw driver combo. It is a PITA without the tool.

The powerbuilt tool is much cheaper than Blue Point, and is on Amazon for cheap...

  • @CaptainGSR Yes the VTEC head is very different and pretty much impossible without the tool. Thanks for the input.

  • Eric If i mess with the ignition timing, say if i advance it would i get better response and more hp on my integra motor? Someone told me its better to advance then to retard timing on a NA motor

  • @TaLoCc Nope, don't mess with ignition timing as the computer will correct you anyway, if you want more power out of this engine put a turbo on it, the low stock compression is good for 7-10psi right out of the box.

  • "A little bit of drag" on the feeler gauge is good...if your workshop manual actually has the correct specs listed. Mine doesn't...setting my valves to the books specs leaves them noisier than ever.

  • @cruddiestcrudever That's why I always recommend checking the under hood sticker and not the book.

  • Like always, great video Eric.

  • omfg! thank you a million eric, never thought valve adjustment was so easy. people i know always said it was extremely difficult and only a mechanic should do it.

  • @tmvhacker Well it is an acquired skill, the process may be easy but it takes some getting used to to find the 'sweet spot' with the feeler gauge, once you find it however there's no stopping you. Good luck.

  • 48months is when honda does it.

If the car has low milage they may offer to do an audiable test to save time and money.

  • @IIGrayfoxII Cool, thanks for the input.

  • Awesome vid Eric! It's guys like you that inspire me to be the best auto tech I can be!

  • @iLano79 Thank you very much for saying that but do it for yourself and for the pride you feel in a job well done, the world needs more of you in my opinion. Thanks for the comment.

  • thanks eric...i just changed the tb on my accord..purchased the special tool...but when i checked the valves,,,the intake were dead on,,but exhaust seemed tight...car runs great so i left them alone,,,never adjusted valves so i was SCARED..the feeler gauge would not go in at all,,,.305mm..what do you think?

  • @hondaslave That's actually typical, normally when adjusting you're only moving them a couple of thousandths anyway. I think you made a good choice.

  • once again..nice feller gauges

  • I have to do this on my DC2 B18B1. Still not sure I wanna do it myself.

  • @Jwrestler91 It takes practice but it's not impossible.

  • when is the full length available for purchase?

  • @calk87 Tomorrow, 11.9.2011

  • 1000x easier than a SOHC. But the way we turn the motor is by using the start itself by bypassing the relay and use a separate relay.

  • @LazySniper I've seen that done but I like to 'dial them in' by hand, it's just what I'm used to.

  • @EricTheCarGuy i do agree with you bc it's more accurate. with the stand alone relay, you can over shoot it and have to come back to it at the end.

  • Great video Eric

  • Will this be the same concept as a D15series engine?

  • @Intelpentium54321 yes. I recently did this on my d series.

  • @Intelpentium54321 Yes it will.

  • @Intelpentium54321 On SOHC engines. instead of going off the lobe and rocker arm. Where you would stick the feeler gauge is where the tappet meets the valve. so right under where the screw and nut are.

  • Will the engine run better after the adjustment?

  • @NETWizzJbirk If done properly yes.

  • @NETWizzJbirk Smoother if you do it right.

  • I have been wanting to ask you about the gloves you where. Are they a special brand for working on cars that are rip proof? Or ... Do you go through a TON of gloves? ... Just wondering becouse I don't think I have ever seen you rip any.

  • @Bartwow76 Yes they are, Diamond Grip.

  • @EricTheCarGuy TY for the reply. I'm definitely going to check on getting some.

  • Rain X background

  • @playstation2bigs Good eye.

  • @fusion good question bcuz it reminded me of a good addition to these videos. Like listing part #'s of each tool used within the job. Hope that's possible Eric bcuz I'm sure it does add more work and as is....you already do plenty for US

  • hay man I have a qustion I did a water pump on a 01 1.6 mazad and the timing belt it in time it will Ide but will not rev but I did not here the motor be for I did this I am at a point now to thank that they cook the head you got any words of wisdom for me man

  • @ISUZU1987 Hard to say, I'd be double checking the mechanical timing to make sure it wasn't a tooth off or something. You might also check the ignition timing too.

  • @EricTheCarGuy I have look done that 20 times and I have had a guy do it twice I reset the CPU still no dice and check crank and cam siner still no joy it some thing but thank you for the reply man

  • Hey eric, do you have the part numbers for those 2 long double box end snap on wrenches? I cant find them anywhere. 12/14mm 17/19mm i think. Thanks

  • @fusionstar916 I don't know off of the top of my head sorry but check on the Snap-on website to see if they are listed in their catalog.

  • @EricTheCarGuy

    Your More Than Welcome

  • Another epic tune by Eric The Car Guy ;-D

    Thanks for the video.

  • Great Vid As Always Eric

  • @shizerproject Thank you!

  • I think I'm going to try this, but I have Vtec.

  • @jdmDC2ftw It will work on that as well. I hope to make a video using one of those the next time I get one in.

  • nice tool

  • when vtec pops the bull shit stops

  • must be florida weather that keep engines running forever. I drive half a block and I'm at operating temp. I figure that's why I really never needed a vlv adj. tried to adjust them at 300k but only managed to bring it down 0.01 mm they where still in specs. now at 500k the engine is still quit . car had 3 trannys and no engine work , other than a shit load of timing belts.

  • @hobieslug45 Yea it's not often that you really have to do this but it's fun when you do. Thanks for the comment.

  • I've been waiting for this video. Keep the B18B1

  • I always love a good valve adjust video. Also a trip down old memory lane to the old shop lol.

  • @Michiganborn1969 Yep, I'm trying to clear out the 'old footage'. Thanks for your comment as always man.

  • That was a good vid to watch and i liked how you had it speeding up with the music but showed and explaind the important parts . GREAT WORK !

  • what is this good for?

  • @KillerZero259 making your engine runs smooth & correctly. With the valves not adjusted, it can damage the camshaft, valves, etc.

  • @KillerZero259 Makes the engine smoother and sometimes quieter.

  • Yo Eric! I adjusted my D16Y7 valves last month after watching your other video, it was my first time but I got them perfect! Of course, it took me 1.5 hours but like you said, I didn't want to screw this up. Oh, make sure the engine is stone cold! Stone cold. :oD

  • @mts0628 You're right about the cold engine, some are adjusted hot but Honda's aren't. Thanks for the comment.

  • Comment removed

  • I heard a doorbell hahah

  • is this directly apliable to a honda D-series engine too?

  • Comment removed

  • @8nosliw8 Yes

  • @8nosliw8 Yea the principals are pretty much the same.

  • Great video Eric! Too bad I already did this a couple months ago. Love the tool you used, though.

  • Which engines require valve adjustment?

  • @spelunkerd

all of them wich are not equipped with hydraulic or pneumatic lifters.

even those specific lifters must be replaced following their wear.

  • @spelunkerd its not about "Which" engines, is "When".

The valves need adjustment when you hear some "ticking" when the engine is runing idle. That's when the camshaft hits the rocker like a "hammer", and you her the "ticking".

  • @spelunkerd Those with a solid valve train which are in the minority as most vehicles have a hydraulic valve train.

  • How much would a good set of feeler gauges sell for?

  • @SuperchargedMustang5 There cheap. Only like 6 bucks or so.

  • @SuperchargedMustang5 I think my set of 'long' ones ran about $30 but I don't remember I got them about 10 years ago now.

  • that is a pretty cool tool, wish all cars made it that easy

  • @zenuke Meeee too.

  • that is a pretty cool tool

  • @zenuke One of my favorites.

  • Really helpful video eric! thank you

  • No 720p this time Eric?

  • @FEAR6655 hey may have just uploaded it. takes time for youtube to encode

  • @fooey88 He normally uploads a day or two in advance, so I don't think its that.

  • @FEAR6655 This is actually from my 'old stock' before I had the hard drive space to store things at full res. The video is actually 920x540.
