Hi Is Platsil gel-10 the closes material to look and feel like real skin? I'm thinking about making some boobs that look real for halloween? Thank you so much.
@WhisperingWillow68 Our website is at the end of most of our videos. You can also find the link on our main channel page. Most everything you see in our videos is available on our webstore.
@jorgealexmr As long as the your Gel-10 is all colored the same you can add more. If you pigment each batch seperate you might wind up with some lines in the cast piece.
@lindyleigh99 If you are working in a very dry climate you need to move fast, like within 20-30 minutes of making the alginate mold. In more humid areas you can wait longer but I would never wait more than an hour or you will start to get serious distortions.
@brickintheyard sorry for the many questions, but we just got our materials in yesterday, and we had not bought a bald cap. could a plastic wrap be used instead? or are there any other relatively easy to find materials we could use?
@jorgealexmr Yes, but you have to use mold release or you will wind up with a face mold paper weight! Vaseline thinned with mineral spirits works good for this.
@brickintheyard Can you not wear it as a mask because it is filled with foam? Ive searched everywhere on how to make a flexible realistic mask of say, a friends face, but am having trouble. Would I make the mold like this and then "basically" paint silicone inside the mold to get the positive mask? Thanks in advance!
@davidtaidawei PG 35 is a Urethane rubber. Platsil Gel-10 is a Platinum silicone. For more in depth infor we have a lifecasting DVD and a silicone skins DVD. Both are available on our webstore and both go into MUCH greater detail than we can go into on youtube.
can you add oil paints to colour gel 10? or would that inhibit the cure, i have platgel sitting in the shop, just worried about painting it, lol, i'm a chicken i know
Cheers, i was going to buy a set of decent oil paints, i bought everything apart from the pigments, from a supplier here in the uk, would pigments from yourselves be expensive to ship over here? as yours seem to do a good job.
hi i was wondering i was at the craft store the other day and i saw a bottle that said latex rubber on it and it said for molds and other crafts do you think that would work for mask making
@nicholasbarwick Mold-making latex can be used to make masks, but you have to be careful not to let it get too thick. If it does, it will form a skin on the outside and keep the latex underneath it from drying. The trick is to brush several thin layers into the mold instead of one thick one.
@brickintheyard so i can use 74-30 safely on my face to cast the mould that i will later pour platsil gel 10 into like you have done here? just checking as i dont want to get this wrong if i buy and use this stuff. could i use alginate to pour platsil gel 10 into, or will I get better results with 74-30? sorry for all the questions, thanks again, your a star x
@MyChemicalParker Do not apply 74-30 (or any urethane rubber) directly to your skin. There are a lot of steps leading up to this video. Our DVD (Fundamentals of Silicone Skins) goes into great detail on this, much more than we have time to go into on youtube. You can find it on our webstore.
@MyChemicalParker We poured it into a PolyGel 40 mold but we have since moved to using 74-30. That process is covered at length in our "Fundamentals of Silicone Skins" DVD. We used a cheap bald cap from a costume shop for the lifecast.
How much silicone did you use? I am making a full head bust of a normal sized female. How much silicone do you think I need? I will be filling it with foam.
@tommy055898 We carry PolyGel-40 but 74-30 is a more versatile product that works well for a number of applications i.e. brushing on or pouring molds. Polygel 35 is a newer Brush-on mold material and it is on our website.
@TamaraAndTheDemon Silicone pigments that are sold on our webstore. Silicone can only be colored with oils that disperse in silicone and don't interfere with the cure process.
i just got my materials yesterday. and a wighead to put the clay on, today. and if you wanna see my finished sculpt go to that link :) btw its my first time making a mask.
Hey love your vids, just one quick question. I'm going to use gel-10 for a full head mask, and I just wanted to know if wet gel-10 would bond with dry gel-10 if I needed to add more. Do you have any idea??
At 3:55, you mention having a little bit of silicone pigment set aside. what exactly does this pigment consist of? I had always assumed many people used oil paint. However, I'm entirely ignorant of working with silicone; I simply find it very interesting.
Silicone pigment is a concentrated tint in a silicone dispersion. Some oil paints work but platinum silicone (like Gel-10) is very sensitive. Best to use silicone pigments if you don't want to run your own tests.
I have spent many days going through every one of your videos at least twice. I'm a theatre carpenter and you've inspired me to really get moving on this (to add to my props resume)! Thanks.
Well basically I'm trying to create a simple face mask, It's for a Halloween costume and the character Im conveying is Pavi Largo from the film "Repo: The Genetic Opera" Im not sure if you wanna take the time to look at it or a photo of it but all it is a cut out face on the characters own real face, kinda like leather face only a bit more neat like. I'll try and call your shop though for more info
I also had another question, I'm using FiberGel E F/X Grade Alginate to make a mask, could I pour the Gel-10 into that the same way as you did on your video or would the alginate and the gel-10 react differently or the same?
If I didn't want the core material to bond to the skin, could I still use the skin as a good face type mask? Or would the skin just tear and not work?

There are a few different overviews up on youtube. Check our channel page and go through the videos. We also have a full length DVD that covers the entire process in great detail. It is called "Fundamentals Of Silicone Skins" and it is available on our webstore.
I can never get the base pigmentation right; mine never look realistic like everyone else's.
How much BITY caucasian flesh pigment do I add to, say, each Cup of PlastiGel10 (a ratio)? I did a lot of research, but never found any ratios or recipees for the amount of base pigment for a real look. How much BITY cauc. flesh pigment/Cup? or /Pint.
Did you also add colored flocking for this piece? Into the cast silicone? What colors and their ratios?
Just had a real quick question-- I made a mask a few months ago, but it wouldn't fit my head, or anybody's. I had sculpted it on a styrofoam head, which is already small anyway. Now I bought a manniquin head, and hope I don't get the same result. How thick should the clay be on the sculpting form so that the mask will fit basically anyone?
That's a tough one. You should get some calipers to check the dimensions before you mold it. A generic head is going to be tough to fit since it is not really based on anyone's exact features.
im planning on making a mold of my custom made terminator figure head but i cant think what kind of mold style to use as the head is hollow and i want to recreate that. the closest ive seen is a video of molding a vase but that was quite a simple shape, whereas my figure head has a narrow neck and a wide inside head area. any ideas how i could mold that brickintheyard? also, can you tell me what materials i will need to buy from your web shop
This video is from the bonus features on our "Fundamentals of Silicone Skins" dvd. That video explains which materials may be used for casting silicone as well as explaining a basic core mold. i dont think you quite understand what i mean. the figure head i want to mold(or cast?) is a character from the film terminator. it is Sarah Connor. The head i have sculpted of her is 1/6 scale and is hollow. i just want to know how i could mold(cast?) it, as i think its quite an awkward job to mold a hollow object, especially seeing as it has a narrow neck that leads to the wide area of inside the actual head. i really hope you get what i mean cuz its kinda hard to explain. does the dvd explain
im about to be 17 an i would like to go to school to do spfx for a living ive always been a horror fanatic for as long as i can remeber but right now im working an dont have the money to take classes or go to school for it so thease videos really help with getting to know the basics thanks:D
Be really cool to see a demo of a mold made from two life masks of different people, with a positive copy of one face (a smaller face) on the inside and a negative copy of the other (a bigger face) outside, to make a wearable mask that makes one person sort of look like another (yeah, I know it wouldn't work exactly right, one-piece masks aren't used in serious makeup work, but I'd like to see how it could be done using silicones of this sort, and how effective the result could be).

can this also be made with an alginate 880 mold with mold release?
lindyleigh99 4 months ago
@lindyleigh99 Yes. You can cast Gel-10 directly into 880 and you do not need release. Just do it quick before the alginate mold starts to shrink!!
brickintheyard 4 months ago
@brickintheyard from the time the alginate mold is made, what is the maximum amount of time i can wait to put in the platsil gel 10?

Be really cool to see a demo of a mold made from two life masks of different people, with a positive copy of one face (a smaller face) on the inside and a negative copy of the other (a bigger face) outside, to make a wearable mask that makes one person sort of look like another (yeah, I know it wouldn't work exactly right, one-piece masks aren't used in serious makeup work, but I'd like to see how it could be done using silicones of this sort, and how effective the result could be).

Awesome. I need a rubber or silicone face mask for a fat lady character that i play. Please help me.
