I must add comment on this video. The scene of # 40 sitting in the roundhouse simmering in the morning coolness, ready for a day's work - That is a beautiful thing. I also could watch her for hours. Very nice. Very nice - I subscribed
The opening shot just simmering in the shop is quite possibly the best vid capture i have ever seen. I could just sit there and stare at it for hours. AWESOME VID
I am originally from Ely, live in Las Vegas now. My G-Father was the Master Mechanic in this train yard in the 30's 40's and 50's. He and his crew maintained #40 and an ALCO 4-8-0, #93 that is there along with #40. #90, was sold for scrap many decades ago. I spent many a summer in this train yard and on this train in the 50's.
This is a great video! Excellent editing, I especially love the beginning part when it's sitting under steam in the roundhouse. 40 is one of the best steam locomotives
And going that slow through the tunnel around 4:25 - interesting. That must be a short tunnel, yes? Otherwise, the crew would nearly die of smoke, and CO poisoning going that slow. You have to run tunnels fast. get in, and get back out. It was miserable!
40 still has the ability to ring her bell on steam or air, which ever it was. I personally think that her bell is more to rhythm when it is not rang by a person.
Well, the bell used to be sounded by air back about 20 yeas ago, but now most engines that have an "Air Ringer" bell have a rope pull as well, and I guess the NNRy. would rather use that.
Absolutely stunning. Great editing, great quality, great compression, audio, etc... but most of all, great subject! Nothing quite like steam in the snow.
Just curious as to what type of camera you use - it definetly looks high def.
Very nice. I happen to have a similar model, the Sony HDR-HC7; a bit more 'dumbed down', but it serves its purpose.
But seriously man, every time I watch this video. I AM FLOORED. This is EXCELLENT. This is THE BEST I have ever seen. 10 out of 5 stars. WOW. It gets better every time I watch it.
Sweet! I was at the winter photo shoots for the for the 2004-2007 years and saw much of the same footage and have 1000's of pix to go along with that too !
Awesome vid and beautiful locomotive! I first learned of her from the old VHS movie "Thunder on the Rails".

Wow. What a great video of this engine. Almost dreamy in the snow and cold making the steam into clouds. Great set of shots.

is the bell steam powered ?
3NUNS 2 years ago
nope, pull cord. no automatic bell ringer.
CaptainHarlock999 2 years ago
so when do you use the bell and what occasions does one use the bell !
3NUNS 2 years ago
You sound the bell at crossings, when moving the engine, and around trestles or bridges.
