  • Awesome vid and beautiful locomotive! I first learned of her from the old VHS movie "Thunder on the Rails".

  • wtf kinda whistle is dat

  • Superb. Great scenery, great steam effects and a fantastic sountrack, a well set up loco chuffing hard.

  • I must add comment on this video. The scene of # 40 sitting in the roundhouse simmering in the morning coolness, ready for a day's work - That is a beautiful thing. I also could watch her for hours. Very nice. Very nice - I subscribed

  • The opening shot just simmering in the shop is quite possibly the best vid capture i have ever seen. I could just sit there and stare at it for hours. AWESOME VID

  • AMAZING!!! This is an instant favorite! I gotta go there! :D

  • l need see one steam locomotive in performance, in live.

  • Saw # 40 on the New Hope Ivyland RR last week. A real treat. Beautiful video, btw.

  • This is now my most favorite steam loco video on Youtube. Number 40 and the snow covered landscape are perfect for each other.

  • Beautiful...Thank You.

  • I am originally from Ely, live in Las Vegas now. My G-Father was the Master Mechanic in this train yard in the 30's 40's and 50's. He and his crew maintained #40 and an ALCO 4-8-0, #93 that is there along with #40. #90, was sold for scrap many decades ago. I spent many a summer in this train yard and on this train in the 50's.

  • This is a great video! Excellent editing, I especially love the beginning part when it's sitting under steam in the roundhouse. 40 is one of the best steam locomotives

  • # 40 is my favorite locomotive of all time. I've been fascinated by her ever since I was 4.

  • Epic to the absolute max!!!

  • Love the number 40 - used this engine for our film The Great Desert Railroad Race - everyone was great at the museum - helping us get our shots!

  • And going that slow through the tunnel around 4:25 - interesting. That must be a short tunnel, yes? Otherwise, the crew would nearly die of smoke, and CO poisoning going that slow. You have to run tunnels fast. get in, and get back out. It was miserable!

  • Very short, yes.

  • Wow. What a great video of this engine. Almost dreamy in the snow and cold making the steam into clouds. Great set of shots.

  • is the bell steam powered ?

  • nope, pull cord. no automatic bell ringer.

  • so when do you use the bell and what occasions does one use the bell !

  • You sound the bell at crossings, when moving the engine, and around trestles or bridges.

  • CaptainHarlock999

40 still has the ability to ring her bell on steam or air, which ever it was. I personally think that her bell is more to rhythm when it is not rang by a person.

  • @CaptainHarlock999 The way it should be, thank god.

  • Well, the bell used to be sounded by air back about 20 yeas ago, but now most engines that have an "Air Ringer" bell have a rope pull as well, and I guess the NNRy. would rather use that.

  • great locomotive !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and great vid!

  • Exceptionally well done! Great set-ups and camera work.

  • i am modeling # 40 in ho

  • #40 Rocks, and so do you man.

Great Job puting this together, it must have been hard work.

    5*****

  • That's a great video, thank you.

  • Another Great Clip !.

  • That was really cool. I saw that loco in the shop 6 days ago. It was so cool!

  • A ton of epic here! The beginning and ending scenes I loved. The scale and locations with snow in Nevada looked really awesome! Really well done!

    Ryan from the UK

  • totally awesome!, i love the opening scene, all that steam rising up

  • One man[railbroh]used to be at the wf&prr, then he went there as there chef mechanical officer, now he works for san luis rio grande rail.

  • it whistle sounds like that of a shays

  • A+ video and Audio thanks

    so much from canada, Steve

  • I remember going when I was 7 and the #40 had just been in a wreck. IIRC it was just finished 2 years ago and I'm 19 now.

  • FANTASTIC! #40 is probably one of the prettiest steam locos still running. 5 stars and a favorite from me.

  • wait...there it goes....yup. You blew my mind away :D

  • Beautiful, Beautiful, much better looking then my old VHS of this trains from the early 90s... ;-) first 2sec earned it 5 stars... Keep it coming.

  • Awesome video, great quality and everything. Keep it up man!

  • Absolutely stunning. Great editing, great quality, great compression, audio, etc... but most of all, great subject! Nothing quite like steam in the snow.

Just curious as to what type of camera you use - it definetly looks high def.

  • Heya....Sony HVR-Z1U HDV 1080i cam. I'm rather fond of it :)

  • Very nice. I happen to have a similar model, the Sony HDR-HC7; a bit more 'dumbed down', but it serves its purpose.

But seriously man, every time I watch this video. I AM FLOORED. This is EXCELLENT. This is THE BEST I have ever seen. 10 out of 5 stars. WOW. It gets better every time I watch it.

BTW, what do you use to edit, Final Cut Pro?

  • Thanks...using Vegas Video.

  • wow I am a railphotographer myself this is great really captured #40 well very nice

  • sounds like Strasburg 90

  • Now THAT'S what i call a train engine! I don't think those newfangled diesel electric engines are gonna catch on. Nice video!

  • Amen to that, we need more steam on the rails.

  • Outstanding!! fine pix, editing, sound, composition, where can I stop? Thanks for an excellent film

  • Sweet! I was at the winter photo shoots for the for the 2004-2007 years and saw much of the same footage and have 1000's of pix to go along with that too !

  • What a magnificent engine, I'd have to say she's my favorite locomotive in the west!!! I hope she continues to steam until the Lord returns.

    Forever Steam!!! Forever Nevada Northern!!!

  • Amen to that! NNRY hopes to have her running again in July 2010.

  • I hope so too, that's when she turns 100!

  • good eye rich. captain harlock. good video. keep up the good work.

  • Ten Wheeler not Mogul
