This was always Weston's (Noble) signature song. It would bring tears to his eyes in rehearsal when he spoke of the meaning of the song for him. I miss singing this song.
I've done a fair share of singing and teaching myself, and I have to say I've never heard better trained or more beautiful voices singing together. The big abbey and cathedral choirs might come close, but not excel over this wonderful group.
I have loved the Nordic Choir since I was a little girl. My mom & I have always gone to their concerts at Luther College. And tonight we are seeing Christmas at Luther where they will perform as well as all the choirs & musicians of Luther College.
Truly magnificent. I have been looking for this song for so long and I only heard 1 version before this and had the perfect picture of what it should sound like and this is it.
While the English version of the song is fabulous, I've heard that singing it in Russian makes it sound even better.
I hear the low Es and Ds, but where in the world are the low Bs (or are they B-flats)? Perhaps one needs a better sound system to hear those low notes . . . .
Anyway: Congrats to the Lutheran Nordic Choir--excellent singing!
I am pretty safe in saying that no matter how long ago you graduated from LUTHER, as evidenced at Mr. Nobles retirement and 50th anniversary celebrations, no one ever forgets the wordsor pitches to O Lord God! If I had to pick 60 seconds of music to play in my head repeatedly for the rest of my life, it would always be the last minute of this!
Dr. Arnold watched Mr. Noble conduct this a million times, and it shows!
Nothing could be more beautiful than the sound of this choir. I agree with other comments, that it could be different in another language and culture, but to me, an American mid-westerner, and an Augustana Choir member (1946-1950), this is esthetic perfection. When the Augie Choir lost Dr. Henry Veld, we all thought choral singing would never be the same. The Augustana Choir is still wonderful, and so is St Olaf's and Carroll College, etc.. Give the composers and the condutors the credit.

This piece is great, but when you translate it to English, not only do you lose the meaning, you start to get choir conductors like Arnold who interpret based on that translation, and you lose the original meaning of the music paired with the Russian text.
As an avid choral enthusiast, I just have one question for you: Who are you to say that someone else's musical interpretation is incorrect? Music is what you shape it into being. I believe that this choir has a heart felt an beautiful interpretation for this text, and that's exactly how it should be. Without heart in the music you have a boring choir, and the Nordic Choir most definitely is NOT a boring choir. Congratulations Nordic!!
There's really no disagreement between you. It can be an objective fact that interpreting a translation can change the phrasing and meaning from the original. It's also very moving in English.
hahaha I get to see them in Cedar rapids today. I love em so much. And to say that Nobel does a better job that Craig is just sack relig. Who actually knows. Nordic choir kicked ass then and kicks ass now
Reply To A KrummyBear:-19yr.Musical Expert of Nordic Choir History. I Never said Dr. Weston Noble 'did a better job' than Dr.Craig Arnold. In fact I praised him. As an Alumna of Nordic Choir, was giving Tribute to the Master who created Nordic & also made this Nordic's Signature song - 57 years of
ReplytoKrummyBear: Thank You!Nordic Choir is superior&Dr.Arnold is wonderful successor to Weston Noble. This Signature song we've sung so many times in Nordic, selected by Weston, touches our hearts We;d end end concerts with it.Great that Dr.Arnold allows us to sing it @ Home-Coming. St. Olaf is fine too,as well Christianson's"BeautifulSaviour"hymn.
However,"O,Lord God"-Tschesnokov is a Musical Prayer,based upon Ps.104:33 & truly touches hearts &tears flow.-Penny,W.N.A.C.
This Beautiful 'signature song"-"O,Lord God", selected by our Beloved Director, Weston H Nobel, who made Nordic Choir what it is, & after 57 yrs, of devotion to MUSIC & us, retired. He is still the BEST in our Alumni Hearts. Quote: (50th Aniversay for Weston) -

There will Never be another Weston H. Noble. He retired from Nordic in 2005 & in 2006 Craig Arnold, the new conductor does a Fine job, as new professional conductor-he is a great profesional! However Hordic choir will never be the same after Dr.Weston H.Noble's Directorship for 57 years-He made Nordic Chor what it is,world renowned - Nordic alumna
Why would anyone vote down my previou 2 this Professional Musioian's Comment of FACTS/TRUTH, as alumna of Nordic Choir? - unless they are jealous & doe NOT APPRECIATE what Weston Noble accomplished with Nordic Choir!I do believe that his succesor, after 57 yr.s of devotion&musical Inspiration by Weston, is doing a very fine job.YES-O,Lord God is the W.N.A.C.Signature song,by Thesnokoff.
To make the assumption that the Nordic Choir could never be as good under anyone other than Weston Noble is an insult to the legacy that he leaves behind here at Luther. No one questions that Prof. Noble is a great man who accomplished great things, but perhaps we should allow Dr. Arnold to do the work that he so loves and try and elaborate on an already great legacy rather than disregard it as 'Not quite up to the old standards.'
