  • I nigger,not for my skin's color

  • why did she kick that person in the audience at 1:02

  • @fantinlatourful Why the fuck not?

  • @fantinlatourful I would assume he/she was crowding her. Not clear that she made contact though.

Rock on, Patti. This concert was from about the first time I saw her...1980, if memory serves.

  • Outside Society!!! LOUD!

  • This woman is one-in-a-million....Very powerful aura...I'd love to know her...in every sense.

  • fuk yes.

  • I'm impressed. You're psychic and stupid

  • Way over-rated.

    Talentless, boring, pseudo-intelligent, contrived.

    Mostly contrived.

  • @spunkets on what godforsaken planet of yours is this woman talentless and boring? wtf?

  • @KyoDes

    Two words: Kate Bush

  • @spunkets Hey I love Kate Bush, I really do, but her and Patti are really incomparable. It's not a matter of who I think is more talented since they both are on completely different spectrums. But calling Patti Smith overrated, talentless and contrived is just plain stupid. It really is.

  • @KyoDes

    Sorry. Sometimes the truth hurts.

  • rock nigger

  • Patti is my goddess and Lenny my idol!

  • lenny is cooool

  • Lenny Kaye is beautiful.

  • wow..I just now know that this is not really a Marilyn Manson song... that's embarrassing

  • @wemusttry At least you know now. Ignorance is no sin, if you correct it :-). Rock on...

  • You sure it's in Germany? Because at the end she says "good day my friends, goodnight my children" in french. xD

  • @InsomniacJack09 some filthy nigger told her she was in france but she was actually in germany

  • Jesus is my saviour but i still get this song. if a word has been stolen from you go and get it back. the mad to yawn

  • @cbacgh

I think you may possibly be insane.

  • I couldn't agree more! Rock & Roll IS MY SAVIOR! She Is My Spiritual leader!

  • Rock n roll nigger.... Awesome name lol

  • I love her little dance haha, I will be really annoyed if I never get to meet her

  • This is Punk !

  • I'm a nigger!

  • @truedude86 Aren't we all :-)

  • @truedude86 Me too!! I like this song!!!

  • Looks like noel fielding.

  • I'm a white one and Ilove it either:-)

  • Thank you>>

  • @Tallyhoman and CdnBiggles ... better stay listening to, and looking at, Britney Spears :D

  • Sure do. Maybe you should start listening.

  • @gio73vanna Here Fucking Here! You tell the iniggerant bastards! This track makes more sense when coupled with the Babelogue intro but you ain't gotta be a genius to figure out who Ms. Smith is lambasting here.

  • We're all niggers here in America. Embrace it!

  • Great song just how I remember it...

  • THIS SUCKS!!!!!!! Why should they bring this s**t to Germany? It was bad enough to listen to here in the U.S.

  • @madelyneharris

What would you rather listen to? Opus, Nina!!!!

  • @TheSimonRowell Yea. I would rather listen to them. They have more quality music.

  • @TheSimonRowell

Open your mind. There is much better music than this song here.

  • patti smith is a wigger

  • @larrlbesnon

    and a cracker, too!!

  • @peyoteasesino666 Ur mothers a moron for not swallowing u haha..

  • Another thing, every mammal fetus on the planet is female before the sperm reaches the egg..In till we acknowledge the divinity of females like we do with males this planet will always be off balanced..Remember she builds the builder without a hammer, compass and square..I'm not saying she's better then us males..Just show some respect for ladies that deserve it.Yahmean(you know what I mean)!!!

  • In ancient Egypt the word that described the gods was NGR and is pronounced nigger.Nigger(NGR,Niger,Nigga) is another name for god/gods.Also,it was used mostly towards women. My word is bond,if you do some research you'll see.Google," the word nigger means god" and "women are the niggers of the world"..This song is deeper then just Patty being a so called white chick yelling she's a nigger..It's about the patriarch system holding down the matriarch system..

  • @Quinotar7 shut the fuck up and let us hear the song moron

  • The piano is missing.

  • styx and stones bla bla bla. why does anybody still give a shit about words? guess hatred means more to everyone than does progression. thats a shame.

  • I love when folks get offended by certain combinations of LETTERS OF THE ALPHABET. It gives me a weird joy. It's really a testament of the power and spirit of rock and roll. It lives. Rock and roll is my savior, resurrected.

  • @katakhom you know, that certain LETTERS OF THE ALPHABET from words and that words can be very offensive???

  • @vflphilipp... then leave, darling. You're missing all the fun anyways. Look past the bullshit and just enjoy the freedom of rock and roll. Everyone's invited.

  • JIM MORRISON TAKING PHOTOS AT 1:07

  • I love it where she flips off the camera and then dances on stage

  • I have to say AMEN to Calinn86

  • Great use of your extensive vocabulary. I like her song "Because the Night" but I see no redeeming value in this song whatever. Don't tell them John Lennon wrote an "N" word song about 'woman!'

  • @StevieB1362 Uhh...Because blacks where pushed out of mainstream society and Patti is merely saying she would rather be with them and all those others outcast by the mainstream and status quo than with society.

  • Comment removed

  • Going to Germany to sing a song about niggers? Kind of a bold provocative thing to do. I bet the skinheads loved this song.

    patti...i love you :o)

  • @koboldfranz I love it when Germans use the word nigger. So punk rock.

  • FUCK Marilyn Manson! Patti forever!!

  • I'd give anything to see Marilyn Manson and Patti Smith perform this song at the same time, together on stage. <3

  • no, i´m really i like manson version

  • i hate this version!!! i like more the version of manson

  • @huacuaf Must be kiddin!

  • @huacuaf too bad she wrote the brilliance of this song and he is jst a pussy ass wannabe covering bitch puunk

  • @huacuaf Patti Smith performed this song to make a statement. Marylin Manson performed it to shock. Marylin Manson is everything awful about the whole 'goth' culture'. Taking all the commercial and negatives of it and making a profit.

  • I love you, Patti Smith!

  • Well look around you! Time for some action

  • Does she have a beard?

  • hold on why she couldnt just use craacker or wetback why nigger and how could she tell somebody to embrace when she neva been called a nigger in her life and dont know how it feel

  • My Gods She looks so beautiful and wild and uninhibited here- Like a creature from some unwritten mythology

  • ......Lenny......

  • been there back in 79 - what a night

  • oh good. now they did. I'M a NIGGER NIGGER NIGGER NIGGER NIGGER NIGGER NIGGER

  • my comment about how i'm a nigger didn't show up yet. what gives

  • "Nigger" is a word that has been wrongly used throughout many many years, making people think that this is about blacks or racists.Just like what happened with John Lennon's song "woman is the nigger of the world".The word means "social outcast" and that's what she says here,"outside of society".All of you who think that Patti Smith is a racist are ignorant and should pick up a dictionary once in a while and open your fucking minds!!!

  • @gio73vanna .I think she's a racist...the song is out of line and in poor taste. She could have used the song to make a point about women's rights, without bringing black people into it. Seems she was just trying to court attention and be "controversial" at the expense of black people. I wonder how many of those drunk, sweating assholes in the crowd picked up on her "supposed" social commentary, or were simply excited to use the word nigger. Pathetic song.

  • @flipgood89 Too bad you don't get it.But then, you're entitled to think what you will.

  • @gio73vanna ...ur right, I dont get it. This song came out in a time not too far removed from when Blacks were hung from trees, murdered and beaten with no repercussions from the law, spat upon, given little to no rights or protection from the govt....so how can she compare that treatment to the treatment of women? It was a thoughtless, disgusting song. I think if the n word had more meaning to you, perhaps you would see things different. Since not, being offended is our problem I suppose.

  • @flipgood89 I respect your opinion, apparently you know more about it than I do.But I still disagree. This song is anything but racist.

  • @gio73vanna ....perhaps she meant well, but maybe a lil more thought of others should have went into the communication of her point. Stay righteous!

  • @flipgood89 women are raped and killed by men everyday. 1 in 6 women will be raped in their lifetimes that's how.

  • @yancybutler ...I dont want to get into an our oppression was worse than yours contest, because thats pointless. What I will say is that if a group, or gender, has experienced discrimination and subjugation, it is incumbent upon them to respect the boundaries of other groups that have suffered mistreatment. Her use of the word, in that context is offensive. Its not just the word, its the social stratification and history behind it that makes that word so deadly. U should understand that...

  • @flipgood89 I in a sense agree we have to own our oppression- yet I also feel that the oppressed groups brought together could stand the tallest. I'm not of African American descent- however I know about Smith as an artist and I know her message- as a homosexual- who today are the most likely victim of a hate crime-i hear the word Fag everyday...had she used that term I would still understand it. i'm sorry it offends you because I know it's heart is in the right place.

  • @yancybutler ...I couldn't agree more about your standing the tallest, comment. Its sad that those who face discrimination have been pitted against each other by the elite n hateful. That is by design. Working class whites, blacks, gays, hispanics, asians...think of it like this. There are 12 cookies for three people to share amongst themselves . Ruling class takes 11 cookies, then whispers to the other guy, hey that fag/nigger/wetback/redneck/gook took the last cookie. We fight. they win.

  • @flipgood89 Wow you really don't get it. Iam blown away by ignorant people coming off or trying to come off as compassionate intelligent people. You really don't have a clue

  • @Mary1964ism ....translation: I am an older white woman, who is generally dismissive of the feelings of others and especially black people. Therefore, I cant truly engage in the dignity of black peoples concerns. Rather than creating a dialogue, Ill just call you ignorant, so I can feel better about my latent racism. Ahhh...

  • @flipgood89 I wonder how many whiny people of color realize how dumb it is for THEM to use nigga 500 times per rap track?

  • @mdonnelly1971 ....im not going to get into a convo with some old ass, immature, internet "tough guy" over the n -word. If you want to take this convo up in public, then we can talk. You can tell me and my people to my face how we are whiny. You can say the n -word to us and we'll just see how it ends for you. : ) . .Any coward can hide behind a comp. That takes no guts. Racist internet lames who post from their moms basement aren't "punk rock."

  • @flipgood89 Nigga please. I bet if got 100 white guys together vs just you, I could probably win the fight too. Why do black guys think that fighting in big groups makes them tough?

  • @mdonnelly1971 ...lol at this 40 year old puss talking about toughness. So let me guess, your vision of honor and courage is saying the n-word all the time, on the internet, from your moms basement? Bitch ass coward...eat a dick

  • @flipgood89 I think you're just being oversensitive. In this song, a "nigger" is someone living outside of society. Anyone who defies societal norms. A black sheep, not a Black person. She calls Jimi Hendrix a nigger, but she also calls Jesus Christ a nigger too. Get the idea? They both spoke out against their society in their own times. I'm white and I'm a nigger and so is Patti. And for the record, she loved black people.

  • @SpunkyLamb ....I appreciate your response, but Im not in agreement. Its easy for a Patti Smith to deploy the word "nigger" when she is part of the privileged class that used the word as a weapon to denote second class citizenship of Blacks....she has the luxury of interpreting the word any way she wants, because that word is of no consequence to her. I find her usage of it disingenuous and offensive given the time period, especially.

  • @flipgood89 I don't know, dude. She's a female poet and rock artist. Even by the 70's, women were still treated as 2nd-class citizens themselves. Black slavery may have ended hundreds of years ago, but sex trafficking is still rampant in the world, especially in America. Women are still objects and slaves. I know some might find that incomparable to what you're talking about, but I hope you and I can agree that we as humans all bleed the same, and no one at all deserves that kind of treatment.

  • @SpunkyLamb ....no doubt, we may disagree on certain issues, but we're on the same team.

  • @gio73vanna My English is the second language. It's good to know this after all those years I've been listening to Patti Smith. Thank U! A comment from Japan.

  • Comment removed

  • @drafishy Hello, thank you too!English is actually not my native language either...lots of love to you there in Japan, hope you're well!

  • @gio73vanna Thanks for your comment. Japan is slowly recovering from the quake, but there're so many people near the nuclear plant still suffering, not being able to go home, and all those farmers and fishermen are out of jobs. I just have to pray for good, hoping the Nuke calm down.

  • @gio73vanna nigger comes from negro and it means just black. that's all. get over it, niggers!

  • @hlbq Such a useful comment...get lost.

  • @hlbq Nigger doesn't come from negro you moron, hahaha, nigger is a cus word it means ignorant.

  • @kurziieee ok, the linguist have been spoken :)

  • @kurziieee There's actually proof it was used against the poor ignorant people. It wasn't til the virginia slave codes of 1618 that race and poverty became intertwined

  • @gio73vanna :)

  • @gio73vanna no shit.. especially when you see that jackson pollock --- is white. HAHAH. Some people should just drop the fuck dead...

  • @gio73vanna:

Quite a lot of former "offensive" terms were used by the affected minorities to caricature and parody them + to take away the originally offensive meaning. Niggah is also used in a satirical tongue-in-cheek way quite often by black U.S. hip hoppers. I don´t know which nerd maintains that Patti might be offensive or even racist (and i have no great lust to find out), but mostly such nerds are also not blessed with too much humor or self irony and i avoid their contact on YT.

  • @gio73vanna No, "nigger" is purely a derogatory word for blacks, a permutation of the word "negro." Now....some people, such as Patti Smith here, have taken that word and used it to mean "social outcasts" in the larger sense, identifying themselves as fellow outcasts with blacks, but this is a later usage, not widely used and then only by those privileged enough never to have had the word used against them in life. It's rather condescending and presumptuous, really. I do like the song.

  • @MustafaCemal No, Patti Smith is not racist. She's paying homage to both Men and Women of Color who went through so many years of struggle and that their now gaining their own special powers at being themselves and earned freedom in an all white society (think about the slavery era and the Civil rights era). I'm black (well, actually mixed) and I'm not offended by this song at all and Patti Smith is one of My all time favorite Artists and I really do respect her body of work.

  • @Mr1991ladarius I just felt like giving an idiot comment... Since I have watched "Natural Born Killers" I fell in love with Patti Smith. Thank you for your patience and for trying to CONVINCE instead of insult me;-). It's good to see someone who can actually THINK!

  • I am a black woman and I love this song.

  • @yogini1992 you love when white people say the word, nigger?

  • @flipgood89 look this song isnt racist idiot shes using nigger as a metaphor! this song is about not fitting in with society and who the fuck cares rappers use the word nigger all the time and no one cares about that!

  • @tallyhoman911 ...wait, obviously you "care" that rappers use the word. And, curiously, you care that Black people are modifying a word that has been used AGAINST them, in order to de-stigmatize it within their own culture and create a new language currency. That is bothersome and "racist" to you? But the word being used as a sociological and verbal weapon against Black people, designed to enforce racial inferiority and signify second class citizenship, is, of course, no bother to you.

  • @flipgood89 look this song isnt racist and you being black doesn't make you special it just means you have a different shade of skintone as i do and were in the same species! nuff said -_-

  • @tallyhoman911 ...Shut the fuck up, you stupid idiot. This is not about us wanting to be special. This is about a word that white people used to justify our inhumanity and our lower class social standing. For centuries we have had less rights than a dog in this country, as we had to fight for basic human rights up until the 1960s....perhaps if you had an IQ over 70, you would be able to grasp these simple concepts and have a decent understanding of history and America's social stratification.

  • @flipgood89 I doubt you're even black, you're probably another one of those acorn pimps out there to continue the racial tension amongst the society outside. You should talk less because words CAN make a great impact. For example, this song.

  • @poopeemacheanie ...if your dumb, lazy ass took 15 seconds to check out my page, you would see I'm Black...And what does Acorn have to do with Patti Smith saying nigger over and over again? You're just mad that you are a washed up, old hag. Scram...

  • @tallyhoman911

Doesn't it make it right. Rappers use it in a different context. Stop making excuses for the obvious.

  • @tallyhoman911

Overall, it's a bad song with bad lyrics, bad singing, bad dancing.... (could go on and on). Get the point? If not, you need help.

  • @madelyneharris says someone who listens to rnb

  • @madelyneharris

    Bad dancing? Surely you jest.

  • @CdnBiggles

Yes, bad dancing. I've seen better.

  • @yogini1992 I`m too black or brown and i love this song <3

  • @yogini1992 She is singing about how we are all on the same "outside" side of society, regardless of skin colour.

    It's such an honest song.

  • @yogini1992

Shame on you!!! Can't listen to better music?

  • there was a time when you could have an American flag in back of someone like Patti Smith? Did these folks get it?

  • This is a racist song if you're a drooling moron who reacts to words like a PC robot.

  • im black, this is one of my favorite songs by patti smith.

  • @HabeKeinMitleid no, and it's not an opinable matter. who said "de gustibus non est disputandum (no question on personal taste)" was wrong, and so are you now.

    cheers.

  • @cazzandra86 Wow. You're pretty stupid. With an ego like that, I would at least think that what you hold your ego with is some common sense and intelligence. Did I say, "In fact," or something like that? No. It is denoted that opinions are of a greater mass than facts when it comes to no understanding of the two in a single sentence. Learn your own language before you exercise your ego.

  • @HabeKeinMitleid NO WAY!!

  • More than 30 years later, people still BITCH about the word nigger. Hasn't she taught you anything? tsk, tsk....

  • Listen, you whiteys been keepin my people down whats this about jimmy hedricks and jackson pollack that be niggers i got my guitar you people cant here it

  • @SaddleCat1 you dont even know how to spell jimi hendrix's name right so shut the fuck up bout shit you have no knowledge of SaddieCat1

  • Also this is shaaaamefuuuul. There is a American flag behind this freak. Americans are so much better. Niggers suck!!!

  • Great song, but I'm glad we're at a point where we don't use this language anymore. We can be more civil.

  • kick out the jams honey!

  • The word "nigger" is no longer a word of hate. It is used to often by blacks themselves, that it has lost that meaning. She is not using it in a hateful way. Instead, she's using it as a term of rebellion and originality. No one liked "niggers" because they were black, and supposedly that made them different. She is referring to the kids that listened to this type of music, who were looked upon as misfits, and letting them know it's good to be different.

  • @FiltheeSepsis

Who told you 'nigger' was no longer a word associated with hate. Here in NYC it is actually against the law.

It is only good to be different when you get to choose the manner in which you want to be different as opposed to have difference forced upon you. People of African descent in this country did not select that word. It was imposed on us.

Again, Patti Smith is my girl and I love her but she is naive if she thinks that being called nigger is an act of rebellion.

  • Lenny does guitar to die for in this version!

  • @wulfshelmut

you should be ashamed of yourself you twat.

  • @BaronessStrange Well Im not.

  • :)

A working class hero is something to be- and song is another way of saying it- with style!

  • She write this song together with Jimi Hendrix as they were very good friends, you can even hear she screaming his name in this video. And as i think you all know Jimi were black so it isnt something negative against black people.

02:00 you can hear shes screaming "Jimi Hendrix is a fucking genious".

  • @poccpocc

    Poccpocc,

I love Patti Smith and I get the song's goal but just because she is screaming about Hendrix's genius does not mean she is not naive in her intentions which I think are not designed to offend.

Smith met Hendrix once, a month before he died. I don't think that qualifies as "very good friends". The song was written by Smith and Lenny Kaye. Not Smith and Hendrix.

  • ooh, I want to say it too ......"nigger" *giggle*

  • Patti Smiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiith!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Nigger! Nigger Nigger! Say it! It feels GOOD!

  • i'm so proud to be a 70's jersey teen (i mean PUNK)

  • long live rock & roll

  • Yea its not right2 (THATS Y ITs the TITLE-lol)u ass clowns....O-n by the way she's making MAJOR DEALS4WHO NOW??????? guess she knows how a NIGGERs really treatd now-lmao>thanx4the laffs.SMILN BLACK MAN

  • Not so surprised by the people saying "racism," but the song (if you pay attention to the lyrics and more importantly -- Patti's career, life and poetry) is about using the word as it was here in segregated USA -- to denote those who are put "outside of society," segregated and more importantly marginalized and oppressed. On the album version there is a litany before the song begins listing all the great artist and visionaries who have been at odds with society and conformism.

  • @jcastano Nice but othering of artists is not the same thing as othering of a people because of their color, etc. "Nigger" is part of the institutionalization of hate against African Americans. That some of us have attempted to re-contextualize 'nigger' does not divorce it of its history and purpose. I'm as offended when I hear Latino, Asian and white kids use the word as I am when black kids use it.

  • @saw1261

Go live around some black people. Go live in a black neighborhood and once you leave, nigger will become apart of your everyday life.

  • @AlabamaConfederacy

Thanks for taking time of from your busy schedule of inbreeding to respond to my remarks.

  • it's not racism, can't you read between the lines? which happen to be quite obvious...

  • Marilyn Manson did an awesome cover of this song!!!

  • @TEMPmichaelhansen agreed.
