Funk was primarily URBAN based music. You couldn't hear too often on mainstream pop radio. They simply didn't know what to do with it! You could only hear this music "SOUL" radio stations. This was just before disco united everybody under one roof and right after the Civil Rights Movement. So, in retrospect, I can't blame them for being so uptight. They just didn't know how to deal with the funk.
Glad God made me funky ... those stiff morons in the audience with no color simply don't feel music like some other folks do ... they hear it, but don't feel it deep in their soul which is why they sit there like dumbasses. Not racist just keeping it real. Too bad the Ohio Players wasted such an awesome performance on such a lame dry azz crowd. Damn shame
I love that little thing the keyboards does at 1:40. Somebody asked if this was jazz funk. Not really, but most funk bands had some players with jazz and/or blues chops. I always looked forward to buying new albums and playing the instrumental tracks. The guys could show off. Just about every funk/soul band did it. Rufus, EWF, OP, Parliament/F'delic, Blackbyrds, War, etc... even Commodores.
I think white people were awestruck. Everyone was trying to embrace black music then. Remember the times. Those clothes look gay now, but that's the way they dressed then. It was funky! It seems like everyone was slimmer and in better shape. Now girls are developing breast at 9 years old! Times have changed.
TVOne just did an Unsung series for the Ohio Players a week ago, and it brought back so many memories. I was a young teenager in the heyday of the Ohio Players and had the biggest crush on the drummer Jimmy Diamond Williams. Damn used to fantasize about him. Whew ... anyway. Jimmy Diamond Williams is still alive and well and he has his own version of the Ohio Players and Sugarfoot has his. As far as comment about drummer in ER, perhaps it was the orignal drummer - Diamond was 2nd drummer.
@ohioplayer Clarence Satchell (born April 15, 1940) died December 30, 1995 ;Ralph Middlebrooks (born August 20, 1939) died in November 1997.[5]and Robert Ward (born October 15, 1938) died at home December 25, 2008.
truly time marches on, they are all in rock and roll heaven now..

Total bullshit from timglf, the drummer in this video is Diamond and he is still kickin with his version of the group. I f ya got a story ta tell get the names straight. I know who you are talkin about but it was not the drummer!!
Interesting story, I am a respiratory therapist in Dayton Ohio and back in 1996 I was called down to give a breathing tx in E.R. and this guy I was giving it to was pretty messed up, track marks on his arms etc...anyway he was telling me that he was the drummer for the Ohio Players. Ofcourse I didnt think he was telling the truth, but then like the next day I saw this clip on VH1 and sure enough...it was him
@timtglf hmm...just wondering why a medical professional would divulge the identity of a patient in his/her care....but, very sorry to hear this no matter who the person is.
@timtglf So unfortunate to hear this. I wonder how much addiction has played a role inthe lives of other members of the band. They were a very talented group of guys.
Awesome!!! Thanks for posting this. I grew up listening to the Ohio Players. One of the baddest funk/jazz bands that was out during the 70s.
They all could play instruments and sounded just like their records when you heard them perform in person. Raw unadulterated talent which is very hard hard to come by these days, especially since everything is computerized sound.
Dam they were too mesmerized by the funk to dance...
