HO-LY crap! I'm not against pros but having the Federal Aviation Administration chastise a father for letting his son practice in real life? Which is usually where the passion comes from...."sigh"
The FAA could have a lot of shit on us. Lol.. I still have a picture of me before I could even walk or talk; me sitting on my dads lap in a 747-400 my dad being the captain and I'm holding the yolk :) It could've been a real sticky situation if I suddenly pushed forward or back causing a control column deflection while the autopilot was on :P
I would be entertained if I heard this and I dont see the big deal. I guess the FAA has to cover their asses but just a warning probably would have been good enough. Ive heard real controllers do way more dangerous things
We let 3 levels pump J's straight out of high school. As a controller for 5 years I can assure you NO ONE was in danger here. I'm actually happy to see so many (obviously fellow controllers) people sticking up for this and noting that the kid is copying what his dad told him to say word for word and that this kid could have been over keyed at anytime... That kid will probably grow up to be a controller and make way more money than all the people bitching about this today.
"Oh my God...they're letting the children control the planes! How can we be sure the kid knows what heading or what frequency to give the pilot?!? How much training have the kids had?!? This is horrible...planes will be dropping from the skies!!" Get a freaking life and a sense of humor! The parent/controller was obviously sitting right there telling them what to say and could intervene in a heartbeat if something developed. All these breathless worrywarts don't know WTF they're talking about.
I love this kid. Prospective future ATCO! :) Probably even his dream to be an ATCO like his daddy. So please FAA, don't screw a kid's dream / family up cuz of this. Besides the Dad was clearly telling the kid what to say.
Pilots sure love that day when the kid was on the comms!!
I see no problem at all. JFK is just yet another busy airport where there have been recent incidents of aircraft getting too close for comfort. A distraction like bringing a kid & instructing him to speak to the pilots will only improve safety. Maybe they should let all ATC controllers do this. Heck, make it mandatory for controllers to bring their kids every day & have the kids talk to the pilots. Even better, make the pilots' kids fly the planes while their dad sits beside them.
i have to say it might be against federal law but the kid just made a bunch of pilots love their job even more i for once found it hilarious when i found out and i still find it hilarious now
@Sonnabend00 come on. This is a kid having a great day that probably was a dream come true for him, and the pilots sounded happy, too. Oh, and distractions to the pilots my ass. why is this such a big deal?, the kid isnt setting up a crash course here, his dad was there telling him what to say. the way i see it is, let the kid do something like this. its a one in a lifetime thing, and the pilots enjoyed it as it sounds. it hasnt hurt anyone, if he was just spouting random shit yeah i would be concerned.
hey the kid sounded better than a dang 3 level in position being monitored by a controller...same difference except the kid sound a heck of alot more confident lol

@TBsFinest813 So are you an airline pilot? What experience do you have? Its pretty obvious whats going on, and isn't anything more then amusing, certainly not hazardous. You ever been in an ATC facility either? Pretty laid back. You have to be, uptight basketcases never last too long.
I heard pilots on the radios for weeks, all using "Adios" in reference to their support of the control who got in trouble, including myself.
@TBsFinest813 You're the idiot, lighten up. My dad is an airline captain and he did not have a problem with this so why should you? Obviously the controller would have a close eye on his kid and would be able to rectify anything wrong if the kid messed up..
What would really be even more awesome would be if a pilot brought his kid to work and let him to his job for awhile. I'll like to see the FAA's reaction to THAT.
An air traffic controller tries to be an awesome dad and every straight-laced person gets all worked up and cries over spilled milk. No wonder family parent-child relationship statistics are deteriorating.
An air traffic controller tries to be an awesome dad and every straight-laced people gets all worked up and cries over spilled milk. No wonder family parent-child relationship statistics are deteriorating.
I think he did an awesome job and this was blown WAY out of proportion....He sounded better than the professionals did! And keep in mind, he was being supervised!
The marxist feminist libtarded nanny state at its finest. Had this been " Take Your Daughter to Work Day", and he brought in his daughter, the bureaucraps would've been fine with it. Your stupid sons OTOH, should be left at home.
I deffenitly know his dad was telling him what to say, and yes it was cute, but unfortinally this is not a time in history expecally in New York, to have chidren as air traffic controlers even if it is a cute joke. Im sure it was all in fun, but ... wow..
Notice how there were adults around him. The Tower was still in control. This thing was blown out of proportion. The kid should not have been on there in the first place, but still. No harm done.
Remember a while ago there were all the stories about pilots drinking on the job, falling asleep, doing inappropriate things to/with the stewardesses, etc...and now a kid comes in and does a great job (if not better) of bringing in the planes, the dad is just trying to be cool and give his kid a great experience, and everything gets blown out of proportion and he gets fired. ridiculous...
The kid was never in charge of making decisions. He did what he was told and describing this as a dangerous situation is way overreacting. ATC's also have their supervisor tapping in on their comms 24/7, as well as one or two colleagues confirming or watching, so in that case, the whole tower should be fired. Not needed at all. This is a non issue and a verbal scolding is more than sufficient here. Media made this an issue, not FAA.
From different and complete tape, not this posting... It is clear that there are not one, but two planes designated 403. The Kid says '03', missing the '4'. It is nothing short of a Miracle that this was not an Aviation Disaster killing hundreds of innocent people. As a Private Pilot, I demand this be investigated. This Kid, and the Father that allowed the flying Public to be endangered in this manner is simply unforgivable.
To paraphrase Yoda, Overblown, this issue is. The kid was more professional than the professionals are at times. I refer you to other JFK recordings, more specifically Ground and Tower. Geez
The kid did a fine job. Its not like the kid was issuing complicated taxi instructions and runway crossing clearances. When his dad said "go" the kid cleared aircraft for takeoff. Why the huge media blitz?
as an Airplane and Helicopter Private pilot, as well as a 17 y/o, I see no harm in this! This was just a father letting his son have a little fun at NO ONE'S expense! Just as
"cbarolet" said, the kid was just reading what his dad wrote down in front of him, not ACTUALLY controlling air traffic. The media is ridiculous, but even more ridiculous is the FAA! Both of which have a tendency to blow things WAY out of proportion! Leave the kid, his dad and the boss alone! find someone else to pick on!
Look. this kid was just reading what his father wrote down. if the media wants a story they should report war games from 9-11. That will blow your mind. Oh wait that might f-up their funding. forget it.. just pick on a kid. he doesn't have funding dollars at your station.
As a private pilot, this was an unconscionable act on the part of the tower. Most disturbing is the kid gets the call for 403, wrong. He says '03'. Then the pilot of 403 makes the 'assumption', that '03' meant him. Assumption is how people get killed. JFK is busy and no place for this nonsense. Not the kids fault, but the father should be relieved of duty.
Sure buddy. Talking on the radio at JFK is not a big deal. The kid did an awesome job and his father was right there backing him up. I bet you tell everybody your a pilot. I hope you tell them about the stick in your ass that doesn't allow you to relax.
What is your problem? I am discussing a clear failure in procedure, Kid or not, and your only response is tasteless attacks? Your response is to start talking about asses? I'll keep this professional, as all former Military Personnel would... thank God you are not a pilot.
No big deal. I was at Paris Orly some days ago, when ATC told an Easyjet pilot to line-up the runway "behind the 767". The aircraft in fact was an Airbus 330... Though, the pilot didn't even asked the tower something like "do you mean the 330?" but just followed it... Things like this could cause much bigger problems!
And indeed, cool dad to give his boy the opportunity!
i remember when i was a kid and them allowing me in the front, pushing buttons and letting me touch the steering wheel. now well lol things have change. this is just sad that a kid cant go to work with his dad and talk on the radio, like even if the kid messed up the dad was there. i hate the way this world turns
the mexicans are dumb and come and ruin our country, so we have to take precautions. now because of the mexicans we cant do the things that used to be legal or half legal. I'm talking about the mexicans strait from the border, the ones who live in mexico most or are mostly mexican. i'm a bit mexican and I can see why you shouldn't trust one.
The pilots seemed to really get a kick out of it. Its not like the kid was actually directing traffic of his own accord. He was just relaying what his father told him to say. The media is rediculous....no lives were in danger. I'm so sick of how every little thing is completely blown out of proportion by the ratings hungry sensationalist media. When will it ever stop.
What a fucking Joke! Give the DAD and the Kid a break! The media and the FAA are making a MOUNTAIN out of a PIMPLE for fucks sake. It's nothing! Not a big deal! People's common sense has GONE.
-_-,.. this kid did not control anything.. just putting out the message his father told him.. and a clean job aswel..
but i do understand the situation.. it could have gone wrong if there was an accident.. and even tough this was not the kid's fault.. they would for certan look at the father job first.. :)
but.. then again.. this kid did not control anything.. and there where no accidents
@pushtin72 : indeed he didnt control anything his father was just telling the messages he should say en well he did a great job! and for the other thing i child can control an airplane its almos al the time auto pilot
But if i were working there i would offer the kid a job!, and it was hearing also not that busy hearing it... and best of all the pilots loved it
@J0llyR0ger I'm tempted to agree with you, however just imagine the uproar that would have been caused if there were an accident while that kid was there?
@J0llyR0ger the FAA and the media ALWAYS make a mountain out of a pimple. One is the government beaurocracy and the other is not having anything better to talk about.
I hope the FAA do not overreact and deny kid's future access to aviation. From my viewpoint the situation was fully under the father's control.
I did a young Eagles flying day for school kid's around 9-11 years old in germany, it was amazing how much they realize and fast. Please don't compare this to any incidents like Aeroflot flight 593.
I don't see a huge problem with the Kid clearing the aircraft for takeoff/ asking them to change frequencies. But what made this situation bad was :
1. It was a very heavy-traffic airport
2. If something did go wrong - then let's admit, there would be no doubt as to who would be blaimed.
On the face of it it does seem bad to the average person who does not understand aviation-talk, which is why I can probably expect a negative reaction. Yet still in the public eye - the FAA has to do somethng
it's the media's fault for blowing this thing out of the water-they just wanted a story! that's why I never believe anything they say! I feel sorry for the father and son + their family! I hope the media is happy for making something small so big--you guy's SUCK!
female commander: "contact departure aeromexico 403 adios".......i am not a looney guy but when she say "aeromexico" sounds sexxxy! besides.....the kid has some "light" spanish accent ,
I am ATC of many years and let a few scouts and school kids talk on the radio. It's a great thrill. Plus the pilots pay attention-sometimes a problem during routine traffic. These are basic commands-no room for misinterpetation. I'm also fairly certain the Dad had the chance to stay home with a kid on a snow day from school, but opted to bring his son to work so JFK would not be short staffed or required to call in OT. Crap like this is why I left the FAA and have never regretted it.
Bloody hell... FAA is pressing charges on a kid who guided the planes out of the airport without trouble!! That's lame! That kid should deserve some respect!!
While this child was obviously being told what to say, and did a fairly good job, it was not something which should be condoned. This is one of the most active airports in the country and the FAA has to show firmness that "all is safe" in the skies over the US.
@Sananda8888 - it was always a thrill when my father took me to his work. Unfortunately his job wasn't as exciting as an air trafic controller. It is a difficult situation - on one hand the child was clearly being supervised so there was no danger posed. On the other hand the authorities are forced to do something about this because the public need to be shown that their safety is being cared for. What started off as a fun day for all involved has resulted in unfortunate consequences.
Really unprofessional of course. But I remember being smarter when I was younger - now I`m older and qualified to use aircraft radio as a pilot, and run a small airfield in the boondocks, I can foul it up legally. I`ve calculated that I`m old enough to be this kids great grandad......
I remember in the early 80's being invited into the cockpit of a 747 from Edmonton to Toronto, being aloud to sit in the captains seat and bring told how to then conducting a course heading change, I was 8 does nobody remember those days lol.
it seemed from the audio, the father was only letting the child radio planes that were still on the ground and waiting to taxi before taking off. am i off base there?
and the father stepped in a couple of times when talking to planes that were landing?
hi bro just for ur information when the child said ' jetblue 171 contact departure" it means that the aircraft was airborn after take off and should call the departure
As idiots would say, "What stress? Having your children come to work AND take over at work RELIEVES THE STRESS for the parents!"
And "What 'miss something important'? Nobody ACTUALLY died! Start complaining only when people ACTUALLY die. (And even then, the child did not mean it--Dad made him do it. And Dad did not mean harm--he just wanted to make his son happy, and give him something to tell his friends about.)"
CHILD TO FRIENDS: "Hey, guys. I had an AWESOME three weeks off from school! Feb17, I was an air traffic controller at JFK. March6, my Dad lost his job!"
@ POLITICTRUTH, mate get the fuck over it, NO-ONE got hurt so wtf is everyone having a sook about, nothing happened so get over it all u LOSERS that have nothing else to do but bitch about a kid, who is being watched by his father so they couldnt of fucked it up, and arrrrgggggg some people are fucking idiots
@ polotictruth were in specif way you see there is professional unethical behavior! Not exist because he bring his kid to a job?! that kid was controlled by his father who was corriedo or screeming and breaking things you are a looser
PoliticTruth you tell me that you are not going to loose your time with someone who can not spell?!, and now you are reading everything and search information about me, ha it so with you I got you, who is the retard now?! you were boring and Im entertaining that what you wanted it so easy with you. bye Gringo!! BYYYEEE!!
@patorulz17 loser? dude i work at a maintenance hanger. This is not funny. Its pure stupidity and this guy should be fired. If we called the tower to taxi an aircraft and this happened I would be like wtf? Is this real?? Fuck off
how is this harmless? this is bull shit. kids should have Never been allowed to do this. What if something went wrong?? I know you will say well blah nothing did..yea but what if?
@POLITICTRUTH ok did it harm anyone? tell me that did itok this is what happened the kid had bring your child to work day at his school and the dad brought him to the jfk airport wtf do you think there would be a kids quest in an airbase? if i were the guys boss i would just tell him not to let it happen again it wasnt a terrorist attack or anything the kid was saying what his dad was telling him to say so stfu our country is goin down the drain theres other things to talk about
If something had, his dad WHO WAS THERE THE WHOLE TIME TELLING HIM WHAT TO SAY could have easily taken over. You all need to stop having a fucking fit and lighten up.
@politictruth your trying to show a point that not have any sence because is very low you know I think you have to work with your problems of envy is not our problem that you father make a good job with you in the past. Hey did you know the kid was with his father?! he was tell him what to say did you know that?! he was not lonely ok so don't envy this cute kid with his father, OH Please! have you mad because you dont have a value point you said fuck yourself..What a looser!

What would really be even more awesome would be if a pilot brought his kid to work and let him to his job for awhile. I'll like to see the FAA's reaction to THAT.

Aargh. My Dad used to take me to the tower with him, but I never got to do that!
NordicBlondeBeauty 1 year ago
The kid was never in charge of making decisions. He did what he was told and describing this as a dangerous situation is way overreacting. ATC's also have their supervisor tapping in on their comms 24/7, as well as one or two colleagues confirming or watching, so in that case, the whole tower should be fired. Not needed at all. This is a non issue and a verbal scolding is more than sufficient here. Media made this an issue, not FAA.
dunderogbrak 1 year ago 2

Geez

as an Airplane and Helicopter Private pilot, as well as a 17 y/o, I see no harm in this!
Leave the kid, his dad and the boss alone! find someone else to pick on!
djerock72192 1 year ago 3
Look. this kid was just reading what his father wrote down. if the media wants a story they should report war games from 9-11. That will blow your mind. Oh wait that might f-up their funding. forget it.. just pick on a kid. he doesn't have funding dollars at your station.

DirtyMill08 1 year ago
As a private pilot, this was an unconscionable act on the part of the tower. Most disturbing is the kid gets the call for 403, wrong. He says '03'. Then the pilot of 403 makes the 'assumption', that '03' meant him. Assumption is how people get killed. JFK is busy and no place for this nonsense. Not the kids fault, but the father should be relieved of duty.
PirateSygnal 2 years ago
Sure buddy. Talking on the radio at JFK is not a big deal. The kid did an awesome job and his father was right there backing him up. I bet you tell everybody your a pilot. I hope you tell them about the stick in your ass that doesn't allow you to relax.
kefster00 1 year ago 2
What is your problem? I am discussing a clear failure in procedure, Kid or not, and your only response is tasteless attacks? Your response is to start talking about asses? I'll keep this professional, as all former Military Personnel would... thank God you are not a pilot.
PirateSygnal 1 year ago

-_-,.. this kid did not control anything.. just putting out the message his father told him.. and a clean job aswel..
but i do understand the situation.. it could have gone wrong if there was an accident.. and even tough this was not the kid's fault.. they would for certan look at the father job first.. :)
but.. then again.. this kid did not control anything.. and there where no accidents

That child was actually flying the aircraft which is much more dangerous than sending out a few messages from a control tower.

Crap like this is why I left the FAA and have never regretted it.
vectorguy13 2 years ago 2
Bloody hell... FAA is pressing charges on a kid who guided the planes out of the airport without trouble!! That's lame! That kid should deserve some respect!!

mayadavincci 2 years ago
While this child was obviously being told what to say, and did a fairly good job, it was not something which should be condoned. This is one of the most active airports in the country and the FAA has to show firmness that "all is safe" in the skies over the US.
Sananda8888 2 years ago
@Sananda8888 - it was always a thrill when my father took me to his work. Unfortunately his job wasn't as exciting as an air trafic controller. It is a difficult situation - on one hand the child was clearly being supervised so there was no danger posed. On the other hand the authorities are forced to do something about this because the public need to be shown that their safety is being cared for. What started off as a fun day for all involved has resulted in unfortunate consequences.
MsBountiful 2 years ago
Really unprofessional of course. But I remember being smarter when I was younger - now I`m older and qualified to use aircraft radio as a pilot, and run a small airfield in the boondocks, I can foul it up legally. I`ve calculated that I`m old enough to be this kids great grandad......

hey, since u are a pilot i have a question...
it seemed from the audio, the father was only letting the child radio planes that were still on the ground and waiting to taxi before taking off. am i off base there?
and the father stepped in a couple of times when talking to planes that were landing?
jad3948 2 years ago
hi bro just for ur information when the child said ' jetblue 171 contact departure" it means that the aircraft was airborn after take off and should call the departure
mrjamal101 2 years ago
Fair point, that no one got hurt. The fact is it's not professional and mistakes could have been made.
The father is coping with additional stress of his son being there, for which me may have missed something important.
TheFlightDirector 2 years ago
As idiots would say, "What stress? Having your children come to work AND take over at work RELIEVES THE STRESS for the parents!"
And "What 'miss something important'? Nobody ACTUALLY died! Start complaining only when people ACTUALLY die. (And even then, the child did not mean it--Dad made him do it. And Dad did not mean harm--he just wanted to make his son happy, and give him something to tell his friends about.)"
