Can you swap out a processor core with a different model? I'm currently running a Intel Pentium D 830 processor and I need an Intel Pentium 4 or AMD Athlon 64 processor, would one of the latter work on a computer designed to use the D 830?
To the Poster, there is critical information you did not mention. What are the specs of the old CPU as far as speed GHZ, 440Mhz Bus system and 512 mb Cache (cachability) and what are the specs of the new CPU ??? we know that you do not just plug in any CPU, the motherboard will only accept a certain CPUs, Intel and AMD are not interchangeable.
well if you tryed to play the game and it dont have good graphics tray a new Graphics card my old gateway has a Pentium 4 processor and it works great on games but it dos not play some of the 3d stuff that good
my newer computer has a amd 64 althon processor and 2GB of ram and 400 GB hard drive and a Geforce 9800 gtx Graphics card and it plays games real good and it plays 3d games good
you should download 3d via player its a free soft ware that lets you play 3d games

i have one question. what happens when you upgrade a processor of 800mt/s to a processor of 1033 or higher? cause i have a 4 year old processor(intel pentium d 915) and would like to upgrade to a better one. if i had the money, I would upgrade to a new mobo, but i don't, So what are my options?
...and next we need to put about a teaspoon of peanut butter on the motherboard (I recommend skippy, it works the best) and make sure to spread it evenly. This helps the electrons distribute evenly.
my computer was overheating "i think" when i played flight sim x and then sometimes i woudl hear a loud alarm beep noise coming from comp. i wonder wtf that means
@Drew927 sounds like it WAS overheating. check to to see if your mobo fan is properly connected/powered and is working. Also, could try installing a second/better fan(assuming you're using a desktop, NOT a laptop/notebook.).
Also since the guy directly touched the top of the processor with his bare finger, it should be cleaned with rubbing alcohol so the thermal compound does its job properly, also the bottom of the heat sink should be cleaned with rubbing alcohol
You would be wise to wear a wrist strap that grounds you, otherwise little amounts of static electricity that you can't even feel can damage the circuitry, especially if you are directly touching the contacts
@Kumansa21 That sticky goo help transfer all the heat from the CPU chip away from it into the big heat sink, without it your CPU chip will get way too hot
its easier if u turn the computer on its side so the motherboard is facing the floor but thats just my opinion also if u get any resistance while putting the new processor in u should stop because u will bend the pins (they arent hard to unbend but its easier if u dont bend them). Lastly, you cannot replace an old intel proccesor with an amd proccesor because they are not compatible
my old dell comp is running off pentium 4 and has like 512 mb ram, is that upgradeable? i havent opened it up yet and i know all the parts in a computer and how they work but have never attempted to put or remove parts from a computer, what processors would work with that motherboard, i bought it in like 2001
sometimes it is best in price and for performance to just upgrade the whole computer. Sometimes if you have an old motherboard it cannot support alot of RAM or faster processors. If you are just an everyday user, and not a gamer (im guessing from your computer specs your not) then you can get a very good computer for your needs at about $350-$500
Every video I have seen today there have been people complaining about how they remove and install the cpu... Can't someone who knows they are doing right do a video???!?!?!?
i recently upgraded from P4 2.40 to 2.8 but it turns off after 30 sec. the processor is stable in BIOS at 84 C but as soon as it starts loading windows it turns off. please help
@nerdishtech Oh, Well I Have a Intel Processer, And I Wondered If I Could Replace the 32bit with a Amd Athlon 64 bit 512kb Cache, but it's 2.00Ghz, instead of a 2.66Ghz.
when you change a cpu, do you get different bios, eg if you had a amd 2650e and then changed it to the 3600+, will the bios information change, will the computer notice any sort of change when you log on?
hi mate nice vid,i am ugrading from 2.13 to quad core q6700 2.6, could you tell me about downloading the bios or if i will get a cd with my new processor that does it for me,cheers,
when doing that is there anyway you can really mess up? I know applying to much can cause it to run over the edges. But besides that does to little hurt the processor?
Thats cool dude nice tutorial I have a model like yours and it was a bit dumb but i could'nt actually locate the heatsink(maybe I did'nt know what it looked like) so by looking on your tutorial i can actually achieved what i wanted to do so thanks matey ; )
can you put a 1066MHz FSB processor into a 800MHz motherboard? The 1066 processor is a intel pentium extreme edition 965 and the old one is a intel pentium 4 540(800MHz)
will this be ok to do?
if so, does that mean the 965 would not go up to 3.8Ghz?
The variables are Front Bus Speed, Make and Socket.
If you have an intel you cant put a AMD, but also, you cant put all intel processors in, you have to chose one with the right socket and font bus speed.
this would help a bunch if I didnt have a laptop! :( But I have to say this is a good tutorial for anyone changing theres. I want to make a computer company with external drivers, graphics cards, and prossecors, but I cant do that all by myself and without getting in debt, along with the fact that Im 13...
Excuse me, once again I have a question, is there any sort of installing of software i will need to do/ will be doing? or do i just slip on the chip , slip on the thermal paste, slip on heat sink, and turn my comp back on?
do i have to configure my comp for a dual core? if so how do i do that? I currently have an AMD athlon 3200+ 64 bit and i would like to upgrade to a AMD Athlon x2 6000. I have the correct AM2 slot also.
Great video, very informative, no steps skipped! although i do have a question, should you be re-using the old heat sink, is that ok even if you upgraded to a better processor?
I used the old one due to the fact the processor was only .2GHz faster and had a slightly better L2 cache, so its not going to generate anymore heat than the old one.
If you were to upgrade to a much faster processor i would recommend a new heat-sink and possibly fan.
