Is he using plectrums? I know that most pipa players do, but I can't discern them here. If he is, it's amazing, if he's not, it's amazing. Very nice tremolo for the older generation which tends to be a little grittier than many modern virtuosi.

older generation players don't play gritty....BAD older gen. players play gritty...there's a difference. And no, he's not using plectrums..many older generation players don't..if they have strong enough nails. There's aonther thing, grittiness in older gen. tends to result from using one's own nails..very little to do with technique. Again, depends on the musician. I know of an older player that is against plectrums yet his tremolo is clear as day, stronger than many I hear nowadays.
