Lol! "Another honey nut cluster!" LOL! Hey can I nominate a Dimbulb? There is one I have been debating with (not sure why tho) who also thinks Japan got what it deserved. His name is MegaSage007....he is pretty clustery n nutty!
While this guy IS a dim bulb, I agree with that, I don't think that the death and destruction are his fault. And while I wouldn't burn the qur'an (just because that wouldn't solve anything), I don't think that burning the qur'an is a good reason for the violence that ensued, thus making the dim bulb not responsible for it.
The muslims in the demonstrations burned the bible, Obama effigies, the American flag, and I don't see them being responsible for christian violence.
I respectfully disagree. Jones is blameless, the fault lies with the crazies who did the killing. Pointing to some crazy person on a different continent and crying "he burned the koran" does not justify murder nor does it absolve the murderer of responsibility.
@WildwoodClaire1 I realised after I posted I didn't quite say what I meant. I was confusing absolving one person with blaming the other, I realise you never claimed the murderers were free from blame. What I should have said is that Pastor Jones, does not share any of the responsibility.
@birkett83 james the street preach has a vid supporting terry jones where he burns the Koran and ask christians to stand up and unite so they can run the muslims out of america sorry buddy but these people are violent and no better than the muslims
The timing of this video about relationships is freaking me out so much it almost makes me believe in God again. The truth will set you free, but first it will hurt like hell. Staying in denial will eventually get you hurt very badly. I'm going to watch the second half of this video later, it's too hard for me right now.
After your comment, I just had to pop by and see what your CWC was. I suspected you had a very pithy take on Jones, and I was right. :D I'm in only a slightly different camp, believing that each act of stupidity being present in a large web of fail does not absolve any of the individual actors of responsibility for what another does. While there may be a nebulous collective responsibility for the entire mess, the individual actions are not directly connected.
Pastor Jones is an attention whore, but on the flip-side we can not keep tolerating Muslims rioting and killing people over cartoons and other nonsense. It is unacceptable that authors like Salman Rushdie and others have had to live their lives under the threat of death from these psychopaths. Perhaps if there are enough Pastor Jones, and enough riots, the West will finally say "enough" and begin arresting or assassinating the Imams who start the riots in the first place.
Can I ask what you would do if creationists began using this type of threat at things that offended them on youtube? I hope it would not stop you making videos. Now I do wish this paster would stop being an asshat, but not because of the actions of other asshats.
Terry jones is a prat because with freedom comes responsibility.
However, the murders would only make sense (not necessarily justified) if HE was the victim. Why did that mob of retards think the UN people were to blame for somebody else's actions? Does that give me the right to murder the first Moslem i come across, the next time a mentally retarded Moslem preacher burns a poppy during Rmemberance? Bollocks to ALL religion.
I agree that Jones is a shitwit, but the responsability for 20 killings with three beheadings rests with the shitwits that commited those actions and those who incited them.
He IS partly responsible, simply because we (and he) already knew that they would more than likely than not, go nuts over the burning, since they have said over and over they will not tolerate burning their holy book.
@WildwoodClaire1 I love Alfayed's comment's on fans who don't like the MJ statue (it IS absolutely gross and inappropriate btw and nothing to do with thre traditions of Fulham). He stated that fans that don't like it "can go to Hell" and then in the next sentence he said "can go and support Chelsea". Looks like he repeated himself there.
Although I'm tempted to say that Gabrielle Chana is a poe, I would like to thank you Claire for informing us of her existence : I think I finally have my Entry for the Final Event of the PWNAGE olympics :D
@TheTomtompiper Cool! They used to sing "when the ball hits the top row, it's Zamorra!" When he first came to Fulham, if he'd been on a beach and kicked the ball at the ocean, he'd have missed.
It ain't Terry's doing. Lot's of people have burned Quran's and they were all nobodies just like Terry - but some person or persons have decided to promote this man and his Quran burning widely. Those people knew what the consequences would be and they also knew they could capitalize on those consequences. This is not about some dim bulb pastor but about a PR campaign that merely uses him. Some things are viral but Mr. Jones was promoted by corporate media.
The closest thing to that which would be realistic are kinetic energy space weapons. eg. Propel a 50 tonne rock with an ablative heat shield into earths gravity well. Any target that hits will be obliterated. Even bunkers 50m underground wouldn't survive. Everyone around the area will feel the impact. Better than using nukes I guess. Once space becomes more accessible and cheaper who ever controls space will have all the power. Plenty of big rocks to play with up there.
That reminds me, Claire. Remember when I sent you that message about Jim Berkland and his prediction for a west coast quake based on his "seismic window" theory? It looks like we here on the west coast managed to not get all shook up over that. I'm willing to bet that he's not going to reduce his 80% accuracy claim based on the latest abysmal failure of his prediction model. ;)
Interesting question. Since I'm not bigoted and I am not overly condescending or ethno-superior - I personally supposed that the vast majority of them would have reactions which ranged from anger (minus violence) all the way down to not giving a shit. Guess what? I was exactly right!
We can all control our emotions well enough to stop ourselves from committing physical violence, no matter how upsetting we find the actions of others.
@AncientAtheist I'm with you --It's insulting in the extreme to suggest anyone but a few would behave like moronic violent jerks. Predictable though. Sadly 20 people died...the moral agency lies with about 50 people making really shitty decisions. Terry Jones - a creep, Karzai, everyone in the media and of course the people who used insult as an excuse to kill other people - every single one acting in a completely disgusting manner.
I honestly don't understand how people can hold Jones responsible. We have a situation where 1 stupid man can incite thousands of people, where is the real problem here? I say it's the thousands. Muslims burn bibles every day, Christians don't storm embassies for it. Is Jones an ASS? Of course, but do we have to be held hostage to every asshole in the world? What happens when the next guy wants to burn a Koran for his 15 minutes, should we start banning free speech to appease violent people?
@christo930 I hold Terry responsible for exercising poor judgement solely for the purpose of getting himself more screen time. I agree that the Moslems who reacted violently are idiots too, as well as bloody-minded murderers..
It really wasn't his fault the muslims all went batshit crazy. The muslims really need to learn to live and let live. They'll riot at the sight of a lady in a string bikini! o.O
@LeksServices No, it wasn't Terry fault that they "went batshit crazy." It WAS Terry's fault for ignoring, and perhaps hoping, that such a reaction would likely take place.
@TheDrunkenCabDriver Are you suggesting that, given events of the past decade, the Reverand Jones' could not possibly guess where his actions would lead? Really? Whether Moslem rage is justified is not an issue. Terry Jones motivation and judgement in stridently publicizing his video are issues. Terry Jones doesn' beleive in free speech or expression. He beleives in Christian fundamentalist dominion over everyone.
@UnnaturalPhilosphy So, you actually believe that pressing like twice in a row will log 2 likes? You don't think YT has it coded to accept one like per user? hmmm I find that strange. perhaps even... unnatural. :)
@UnnaturalPhilosphy how do i know YT coded it properly? It might TAKE the dislike and when you hit like, it just ignores it in the database code. ???? hehehe I do NOT trust YT coding. I always copy the comment text b4 hitting Post also. burned waaaaay too many times.
I don't think it’s fair to say that that pastor was responsible for those murders. I committed crimes when I was younger and tried to blame it on the influence of gangster rap music. Bottom line is people need to take responsibility for their actions. I paid my price for fucking up and so should those murders. Terry Jones really is a douche though but not responsible. If it wasn't the Koran burning the murderers could have chosen another reason to kill for.
Claire . . . . @ 6:01 you use a term spelled "Budgrigar" in the little adendum boxes. I believe you left out an "e" (Budgerigar), or maybe you didn't, either way I couldn't find it spelled in the way you presented it. With that said, how are you using this term in describing your ex's family? If my spelling is correct, then did the ex's family behave as a bunch of seed eating, multi-colored, flat-tailed parrots or did your partner literally raise parrots for fun or for profit? Just curious.
@BloodTar If the US collectively flips Jones the bird and makes him our dim bulb for what he did I think that would be more effective than making him a martyr by outlawing his stupidity and throwing him in jail.
@BloodTar I doubt you are capable of understanding anything more complex than a comic book. None of us exercise unfettered free speech in our lives. At the very least, we would certainly all be fired from our jobs at some point if we did. In the case of the Reverand Jones, he was solely interested in perpetuating his 15 minutes of fame by willfully pissing off Moslem fundamentalists, and if anyone got hurt in ensuing violence that was just too damned bad.
It is an issue if ones hope or even intention is to shut one down. Are you hoping or desiring that whacky religious speech is shut down? Only you can truly answer that one for yourself internally, regardless of how you respond publicly. Not accusing you, but I find that many who vehemontly disagree and despise the religious world, secretly wish to see certain religious speech, if not all, lableled as "hate speech" in order to see it shut down and done away with completely.
The worst thing about Muslims responding to loony Christians with violence is that it works. Many countries in Europe have made it a hate crime to do what Jones did. He was irresponsible but I hope you don't suggest our government pass legislation to outlaw it. That would be seen as a win for the religion that can rally members to be the most blood thirsty.
I hate to disagree with the very charming Claire, but nutty Christians we will always have with us--the fault lats with the nutty Muslims who are actually harming and killing and destroying property for no reason whatsoever--I don't think that was the last remaining copy of the Koran!
Terry Jones and Fred Phelps in Thunderdome - "two assholes enter, one asshole leave" is a win either way. Or maybe they can mutually destroy each other.....
i think there is a serious problem when someone does something stupid and intolerant, then in retaliation a riot ensues and 20 people are murdered, then we blame the intolerant guy for the murders insteaD of the murderers. blame terry jones for burning a koran and being an intolerant dumbass. blame the murderers for commiting murders. jones is a moron, the moslem murderers are moronic barbarians.they can both f*** off
@WildwoodClaire1 it seemed as if u were blaming jones for the murders, and while he is obviously involved, i don't think he is responsible. perhaps if some moslems targeted him or his family or church,u could lay a small portion of the blame at his feet, but they murdered innocent u.n. workers who had nothing to do with it. i almost want to burn a koran myself(however i know i should give myslef more time to process the info before acting) neway,i'm glad u don't think the murderers are blamesles
@mebe84 I am somewhat surprised that many seem unwilling to acknowledge that blame is shares in this case. Jones is culpable for his public incitement to hatred. It was a poor exercise of his freedom of expression.
@WildwoodClaire1 blame for what exactly? i feel like we should blame jones for his taunt. but we should also blame the moslems for their wildly inappropriate and disproportionate response. when the danish cartoonist offended islam, they actually killed him, not u.n. workers. how could jones know?in this instance i would be absolute, blame jones only for his own actions. his actions are neither better nor worse because of the consequences.
@lisaford42 Thanks for reminding me that I have been intending to include him in the nominees list. I think I even downloaded one of his videos a couple of weeks ago.
Terry Jones is a complete and total douche. And we can pretend all day that words and symbolic actions have no consequence all we want. But it doesn't make true. We have to deal with the reality and not what we want it be. Terry Jones' actions are an example of what we atheists criticize. Religions provoking one another and other people get caught in the middle.
Sooo, Theo Van Gogh ask for it? Seriously folks, If you were to behead someone in America over burning "An" bible, Would you not expect to go to prison, to be butt raped, daily, by "bubba" ?? They know it won't happen there. It is up to self control. They have shown time and time again, they have none.
They have NO excuse! NONE!. . . NONE!
It's the same thing as murdering over opposing views of "the Iliad" or "Macbeth" no difference at all
@pumpstations No, van Gogh was no more to blame than the victims murdered were t oblame. Terry Jones, on the other hand, does bear some responsibility.
@WildwoodClaire1 Don't get me wrong, but He did make that film, he knew it would piss them off beforehand. Granted Our "blessed" haha Terry bears more but? how much?, rioting in the streets? beheading's? Even he could not have "really" expected that.
I'm also curious, It seems every time I watch TV, there's an American flag on fire over there. It is done to provoke us. We don't riot in the streets, I dare say if a bible were burned the fundies would not cancel breakfast at Denny's.
@WildwoodClaire1 A couple of my friends started using that word too because they hear me use it so often but they still don't know exactly what it means
If we are going to convict Terry Jones ala Charles Manson style; I think you'll actually need to prove Terry Jones instructed or orchestrated the killings.
I am not so clear on the events in Pakistan. So many reports give an unclear picture. I have seen reports saying it was a peaceful protest, but they were fired upon. It is unclear what incited the protest to the level of killing, or whom did the killing.
What I am reasonably certain of... Terry Jones didn't orchestrate the killings.
@LasraelLarson No one has suggested there was an indictable offense. I have explicitly stated that he exercised poor judgement motivated by his own religious bigotry, quite possibly in the hope of evoking a violent reaction.
& I am not clear that the crowd of protesters wasn't set up.
I haven't seen the speeches from the Mullahs who played the video to the crowd, or what they said. & I do not have any idea who actually killed the 13 UN workers.
There is just way to much that I do not know.
Terry Jones is an idiot. That much I am comfortable in saying. ;)
@WildwoodClaire1 Yeah, from his perspective, he was in a win-win scenario. If nothing happened in response, then he would say, "See! All this uproar was nothing important." However, with the killings, he can just point to them and say, "Damn Savages! It is just a damn book! Proves me right too, I might add. This book teaches violence." I saw we put the bible on trial. You could be a juror, covering the geological claims made in it. What do you think? =p
Jones is a douchebag, to be sure. But so are the Islamic nutjobs who responded to his provocation by beheading people. Attacking freedom of speech by acts of violence has no place in the civilized world. The citizens of Mazar-e -Sharif need to be taught a lesson. I recommend hell-fire missiles. They'll quickly learn whom not to fuck with.
GODZ BE DAMMED! I hit dislike by mistake. fuck. ok, I'm going to log into another account and LIKEEEEEEE. stupid yt where's the "are you sure?" popup when you need it?
funny how all the prophets and psychics can never predict things even within a few weeks. How could they miss the 9.0 quake coming? it's the largest one in a loooooong time. Why couldn't they predict Terry Jones would burn a Quran? Seems all they can predict with accuracy is that "something bad is going to happen sometime in the future".
Not understanding consequences of your actions....
Muslims will be up in arms about people criticising muslims killing people, even for a burnt koran. They don't understand they bring the criticism down on their heads by killing. Its why we criticise them. Its why the koran got burnt. Its why I hate muslims.
@WildwoodClaire1 I 'm sure it still applies. But my comment still applies too. I know muslims and I are on a merry go round, one of us should be smart enough to get off. I bet it won't be me, I'll always object to the killing. I might buy my dad a catchers mitt.
@rarrmonkey That analogy is poor beyond description because no coersion was involved in the incident we are discussing. As for not huritng anyone, you might want to share that insight with the families of the people killed.
@WildwoodClaire1 What about the obvious point being made by those responsible for the violence, don't insult our religion or we will kill a bunch of people.
Blaming Terry Jones for the religious inspired riots in Afghanistan is like blaming the NKVD for the massecre at Babi Yar. Is Terry Jones a douch. Of course. But he is not reponsible for others acting out when they are offended at him.
@mjh012363 He is partically responsible if he had the imagination necessary to predict the likely response to his action. All indications are that he hoped to provoke just such a reaction and THAT demonstrates a complete disregard for the health and well being of those attacked. If someone standing in a crowd provoked an angry bull to attack, thus resulting in injury and death to others, he would be held responsible. Thus it was with the Reverend Jones and the red flag of his conflagration.
@WildwoodClaire1 "...if he had the imagination necessary to predict the likely response to his action..."
I'm sure that Dr. Tiller could of imagine his own demise at the hands of religious zealots too. According to your reasoning we wouldn't be able to voice any opinion or act upon them in a peaceful manner if we just could imagine a negative response by a religious nut.
"All indications are that he hoped to provoke just such a reaction..."
@mjh012363 One could argue that enraged crowds are not reasoning human beings either. And if you don't imagine Terry Jones wants to inflame the passions of Islamic fundamentalists and evoke a violent reaction, then you haven't followed the story fo the Reverend Jones very closely.
@mjh012363 Are you suggesting that ONLY if he expressly stated, on camera, that his intention was to stir violence, can he be suspected of wishing to stir up violence? Really? Look, we don't agree on this issue. We're not going tot agree. I'll leave it at that.
@WildwoodClaire1 "Are you suggesting that ONLY if he expressly stated, on camera, that his intention was to stir violence, can he be suspected of wishing to stir up violence? Really?"
@mjh012363 And, the angry bull analogy was appropriate because it was the actions of the person in the analogy, not the actions of the bull, that I compared to the Reverend Jones' behavior.
@WildwoodClaire1 "And, the angry bull analogy was appropriate because it was the actions of the person in the analogy, not the actions of the bull..."
No it isn't. When it comes to an angry bull a person doesn't have the right to assume the angry bull is rational. When it comes to other peoples' sensablities however a person does have the right to assume that.
@mjh012363 I doubt Dr. Tiller considered it likely that a nut would walk int ohis church and gun him down. You seem incapable of appreciating that I am not absolving the murderous cretins in Afghanistan of their guilt.
Um..I believe I did see a film of him actually predicting something along those lines. But that is not important. What's important is that he had the courage of his convictions anyway.
"You seem incapable of appreciating that I am not absolving the murderous cretins in Afghanistan of their guilt."
You seem to be placing some of it on Terry Jones however.
@mjh012363 You said it. What he did was burn some paper. What they did was actually harmful. Can't really blame him for the fairy tale and fragile sensibilities of the extremely deluded bunch of Muslims that to my opinion are simply looking for a scapegoat to crap on and this was one of them. As for the other 99% of Muslims who did NOT harm anyone at the news, bravo and maybe there is hope yet.
@TruthSurge The Reverend Jones exercised his free speech rights, but also an astonishing lack of maturity and judgement. For that he has been roundly, and quite appropriately, criticised.
Sorry but even if that guy pastor is a jackass what he did was exercise his free speech rigfhts, the fact that uneducated religious goat hearders retards wearing pyjamas decided to kill because under the pretence that they where offended is bullshit.
If you read the old testament you realise God seemed to have issues thousands of years ago and struck out in rather rash ways. I thought that God was over that years ago , why pick on the poor Japanese.
Claire, you forgot to mention Cascadia. The earthquake we are expecting in the Pacific Northwest will be on par with Japan, Chile and Indonesia. At least this what the experts constantly like to remind us with.
Claire, I have just finished watching some of Gabrielles videos, did you know that she has mind to mind communication with Vladimir Putin and Brent Spiner? You definitely picked the right person for dim bulb of the week. She believes that the Jesuits are controlling her men all 40 of them and that she's a Nobel prize winning physician and scientist. Yet she hasn't been able to collect her winnings because of the Jesuits. What a freakin' whack job! I can't believe that she's not in a hospital.
@journeyer58 Unless she's in imminent danger of physically harming herself or others she can't be hospitalized against her wishes; & that assumes the local MHMR isn't too overwhelmed to take her. But she seems harmless, though probably burdensome & annoying to the people around her. Years ago I had a friend whose roommate's delusions were far likely to result in harm--& the guy had a small armory. Fortunately, he was so morbidly obese he could hardly walk & THE laziest person I've ever met.
Secular people in the western world have fought for centuries towards the goal that shit like thatin Afghanistan doesn't happen in the civilized world. People like "Dr" Jones and other fundie forces try to take away this priviledge from us. Religion kills people dead. And I mean ANY religion, if only it has its way. Needs to be stopped.
My wife is stationed at one of the bases that was attacked RIGHT now. Being AFN, she in fact had to do a story to make sure to seperate the actions of these people from the ideas of the military and the US government. I STILL support they're rights to be complete IDIOTS, but the point is that they are idiots. If you have the right to do something, that doesn't mean you shouldn't consider the consequences of you actions. Having a right doen't mean it won't affect someone else DISASTROUSLY.
You know, when i was a kid,we had quite a few horses, and when horses are upset they get a wild sort of look in their eye, that lets you know that this isnt the horse you want to mess with right now. every one of these "God hates Japan" folks, you get a very similar, crazed look
Ill say it here liek everywhere else. If you blame Terry Jones, then you must also blame Kurt Westergaard for his cartoons. He knew that drawing 'Mo was blasphemy in Islam, and he did it. MORE people died over the cartoons than Terry Jones' Koran. The only thing anyone has said is "He knew people peopel would get hurt, Westergaard didnt." Thats a lie - he knew that is was blasphemy and using this logic, that old Dane is responsible too - and you know he isnt.
As much as I disagree with book burning, the only responsible people for tragedy in Afghanistan are the people who committed the violence. Attacks on free speech via threat of violence by radicals are as real as those imposed by governments. I don't have the link but not long ago an Imam retracted his positive stance on evolution because of death threats. That is the danger of self censoring. Never thought I would give you a thumbs down ;(
@Metazone101 But EVERYONE know that if that shit brained fuckwit went ahead with what he said he would do, shit was going to happen. People are dead now, but i guess its ok because they are just poor brown people who are muslims and not nice, white, Christians, right?
@EvilEuropean With your logic, it is the woman's fault when her man beats her because she said something wrong. She knows shit was going to happen, and he may just beat the kids too, so it is all her fault. I have no idea who died at the UN compound but color and especially religion (as I am an anti theist) have zero impact on my feelings. A group of fanatical Muslims killed innocent people because some whack job half way around the world burned their holy book. "Peace" my ass.
@Metazone101 What has woman getting beating by an abuse husband got to do with this? Is the husband thousands of miles away or something? Your analogy makes no sense. Here is another analogy....shouting fite in a thearte and knowing that it will cause a stamped that will kill people.
As for the race and religion, errr, Afghanistan is made up of poor brown people. Im sure you would be more upset if white, middle class Christian americans were killed.
@EvilEuropean EvilEuropean, I nominate you for Caire's Dim Bulb award next week. Shouting fire in a theater is not protected speech. Burning the book is. Twice you have implied I am racist and an even worse insult, Christian, For all we know, the UN staff (remember, the people KILLED by the Afghans) were white Christians. Where is your head? Buried up your backside I suspects.
@EvilEuropean Actually, it took more than a week before things went to hell in Afghanistan, and it took a mention in a speech by the Afghan President and numerous Imams making exhortations to violence during Friday services to get anything to happen.
@evensgrey From what I read, the killers were insurgents using it as an excuse to create mayhem, not the general population. Jones knew that violence was going to happen, but he also knew it was going to happen to someone else and not to him.
This is on my short list of favorite channels, even though you are a bit of a shrinking violet, Claire.

Jones was promoted by corporate media.

lol seismic weapons!

"How do you suppose Muslims are going to react"?
Interesting question. Since I'm not bigoted and I am not overly condescending or ethno-superior - I personally supposed that the vast majority of them would have reactions which ranged from anger (minus violence) all the way down to not giving a shit. Guess what? I was exactly right!
We can all control our emotions well enough to stop ourselves from committing physical violence, no matter how upsetting we find the actions of others.
AncientAtheist 11 months ago
@AncientAtheist I'm with you --It's insulting in the extreme to suggest anyone but a few would behave like moronic violent jerks. Predictable though. Sadly 20 people died...the moral agency lies with about 50 people making really shitty decisions. Terry Jones - a creep, Karzai, everyone in the media and of course the people who used insult as an excuse to kill other people - every single one acting in a completely disgusting manner.

seonidh 11 months ago
I honestly don't understand how people can hold Jones responsible. We have a situation where 1 stupid man can incite thousands of people, where is the real problem here? I say it's the thousands. Muslims burn bibles every day, Christians don't storm embassies for it. Is Jones an ASS? Of course, but do we have to be held hostage to every asshole in the world? What happens when the next guy wants to burn a Koran for his 15 minutes, should we start banning free speech to appease violent people?
christo930 11 months ago
@christo930 I hold Terry responsible for exercising poor judgement solely for the purpose of getting himself more screen time. I agree that the Moslems who reacted violently are idiots too, as well as bloody-minded murderers..

@LeksServices No, it wasn't Terry fault that they "went batshit crazy." It WAS Terry's fault for ignoring, and perhaps hoping, that such a reaction would likely take place.

This to me is pretty simple.
Terry Jones is an idiot and knew what would likely happen.
But the only people responsible are the ones that killed innocents in the name of their malformed allah meme.
gotohell114 11 months ago
@TheDrunkenCabDriver Are you suggesting that, given events of the past decade, the Reverand Jones' could not possibly guess where his actions would lead? Really? Whether Moslem rage is justified is not an issue. Terry Jones motivation and judgement in stridently publicizing his video are issues. Terry Jones doesn' beleive in free speech or expression. He beleives in Christian fundamentalist dominion over everyone.

@BloodTar If the US collectively flips Jones the bird and makes him our dim bulb for what he did I think that would be more effective than making him a martyr by outlawing his stupidity and throwing him in jail.
foxlake02 11 months ago
@BloodTar I doubt you are capable of understanding anything more complex than a comic book. None of us exercise unfettered free speech in our lives. At the very least, we would certainly all be fired from our jobs at some point if we did. In the case of the Reverand Jones, he was solely interested in perpetuating his 15 minutes of fame by willfully pissing off Moslem fundamentalists, and if anyone got hurt in ensuing violence that was just too damned bad.
WildwoodClaire1 11 months ago
@BloodTar Freedom of speech is not at issue. The Reverand Jones' judgement and motivation ARE issues.
WildwoodClaire1 11 months ago
@WildwoodClaire1
BloodTar 10 months ago
The worst thing about Muslims responding to loony Christians with violence is that it works. Many countries in Europe have made it a hate crime to do what Jones did. He was irresponsible but I hope you don't suggest our government pass legislation to outlaw it. That would be seen as a win for the religion that can rally members to be the most blood thirsty.
foxlake02 11 months ago
I hate to disagree with the very charming Claire, but nutty Christians we will always have with us--the fault lats with the nutty Muslims who are actually harming and killing and destroying property for no reason whatsoever--I don't think that was the last remaining copy of the Koran!

i think there is a serious problem when someone does something stupid and intolerant, then in retaliation a riot ensues and 20 people are murdered, then we blame the intolerant guy for the murders insteaD of the murderers. blame terry jones for burning a koran and being an intolerant dumbass. blame the murderers for commiting murders. jones is a moron, the moslem murderers are moronic barbarians.they can both f*** off
mebe84 11 months ago
@mebe84 WHo said the murderers weren't to blame?
WildwoodClaire1 11 months ago
@WildwoodClaire1 it seemed as if u were blaming jones for the murders, and while he is obviously involved, i don't think he is responsible. perhaps if some moslems targeted him or his family or church,u could lay a small portion of the blame at his feet, but they murdered innocent u.n. workers who had nothing to do with it. i almost want to burn a koran myself(however i know i should give myslef more time to process the info before acting) neway,i'm glad u don't think the murderers are blamesles
mebe84 11 months ago
@mebe84 I am somewhat surprised that many seem unwilling to acknowledge that blame is shares in this case. Jones is culpable for his public incitement to hatred. It was a poor exercise of his freedom of expression.
WildwoodClaire1 11 months ago
@WildwoodClaire1 blame for what exactly? i feel like we should blame jones for his taunt. but we should also blame the moslems for their wildly inappropriate and disproportionate response. when the danish cartoonist offended islam, they actually killed him, not u.n. workers. how could jones know?in this instance i would be absolute, blame jones only for his own actions. his actions are neither better nor worse because of the consequences.

They know it won't happen there. It is up to self control. They have shown time and time again, they have none.
They have NO excuse! NONE!. . . NONE!

LasraelLarson 11 months ago
@LasraelLarson No one has suggested there was an indictable offense. I have explicitly stated that he exercised poor judgement motivated by his own religious bigotry, quite possibly in the hope of evoking a violent reaction.
WildwoodClaire1 11 months ago
@WildwoodClaire1
That much I am comfortable in saying. ;)
LasraelLarson 11 months ago
@WildwoodClaire1 Yeah, from his perspective, he was in a win-win scenario. If nothing happened in response, then he would say, "See! All this uproar was nothing important." However, with the killings, he can just point to them and say, "Damn Savages! It is just a damn book! Proves me right too, I might add. This book teaches violence." I saw we put the bible on trial. You could be a juror, covering the geological claims made in it. What do you think? =p

Blaming Terry Jones for the religious inspired riots in Afghanistan is like blaming the NKVD for the massecre at Babi Yar. Is Terry Jones a douch. Of course. But he is not reponsible for others acting out when they are offended at him.
mjh012363 11 months ago 2
@mjh012363 He is partically responsible if he had the imagination necessary to predict the likely response to his action. All indications are that he hoped to provoke just such a reaction and THAT demonstrates a complete disregard for the health and well being of those attacked. If someone standing in a crowd provoked an angry bull to attack, thus resulting in injury and death to others, he would be held responsible. Thus it was with the Reverend Jones and the red flag of his conflagration.
WildwoodClaire1 11 months ago
@WildwoodClaire1 "...if he had the imagination necessary to predict the likely response to his action..."
I'm sure that Dr. Tiller could of imagine his own demise at the hands of religious zealots too. According to your reasoning we wouldn't be able to voice any opinion or act upon them in a peaceful manner if we just could imagine a negative response by a religious nut.
"All indications are that he hoped to provoke just such a reaction..."
Now you are just judging the man.
Con't
mjh012363 11 months ago
@mjh012363 "If someone standing in a crowd provoked an angry bull to attack,..."
False comparison. Angry bulls are not reasoning human beings. Or what should be reasoning human beings.
mjh012363 11 months ago
@mjh012363 One could argue that enraged crowds are not reasoning human beings either. And if you don't imagine Terry Jones wants to inflame the passions of Islamic fundamentalists and evoke a violent reaction, then you haven't followed the story fo the Reverend Jones very closely.
WildwoodClaire1 11 months ago
@WildwoodClaire1 Has he said that he wishes to incite Muslim riots? If so then that would be different and legally actionable as "fighting" words.
mjh012363 11 months ago
@mjh012363 Are you suggesting that ONLY if he expressly stated, on camera, that his intention was to stir violence, can he be suspected of wishing to stir up violence? Really? Look, we don't agree on this issue. We're not going tot agree. I'll leave it at that.
WildwoodClaire1 11 months ago
@WildwoodClaire1 "Are you suggesting that ONLY if he expressly stated, on camera, that his intention was to stir violence, can he be suspected of wishing to stir up violence? Really?"
That pretty much sums up the legal definition.
mjh012363 11 months ago
@mjh012363 It is not, however, the moral definition.
WildwoodClaire1 11 months ago
@WildwoodClaire1 Your moral definition not mine.
mjh012363 11 months ago
@mjh012363 And, the angry bull analogy was appropriate because it was the actions of the person in the analogy, not the actions of the bull, that I compared to the Reverend Jones' behavior.
WildwoodClaire1 11 months ago
@WildwoodClaire1 "And, the angry bull analogy was appropriate because it was the actions of the person in the analogy, not the actions of the bull..."
No it isn't. When it comes to an angry bull a person doesn't have the right to assume the angry bull is rational. When it comes to other peoples' sensablities however a person does have the right to assume that.
mjh012363 11 months ago

WildwoodClaire1 11 months ago
@WildwoodClaire1 "I doubt Dr. Tiller considered it likely..."
Um..I believe I did see a film of him actually predicting something along those lines. But that is not important. What's important is that he had the courage of his convictions anyway.
"You seem incapable of appreciating that I am not absolving the murderous cretins in Afghanistan of their guilt."
You seem to be placing some of it on Terry Jones however.
mjh012363 11 months ago
@mjh012363 You said it. What he did was burn some paper. What they did was actually harmful. @Metazone101 But EVERYONE know that if that shit brained fuckwit went ahead with what he said he would do, shit was going to happen. People are dead now, but i guess its ok because they are just poor brown people who are muslims and not nice, white, Christians, right?

@EvilEuropean neither would be missed if they cant control themselves and act in a civilized manner
