  • I don't hurt anymore All my teardrops are dried No more walkin' the floor With that burnin' inside Just to think it could be Time has opened the door And at last I am free I don't hurt anymore (Chorus) No use to deny I wanted to die The day you said we were thru But now that I find you're out of my mind I can't believe that it's true I've forgotten somehow That I cared so before And it's wonderful now I don't hurt anymore
  • I was in a bad relationship and a very abusive breakup and I would listen to this song and yearn for the day I could sing it and believe the words were true. I was finally able to do that today :)

  • thankyou dinah

  • STOP comparing Amy to Dinah and vice versa... Dinah was Amy's idol, she would NEVER even try to 'outsing' her and amy never suggested or gave the impression that she was better than her. Im sure if they were in the same lifetime they would have worked together and been good friends...now stfu and just appreciate the damn music.

  • The Paul Williams Band did a good job accompanying Dinah Washington.

  • amy loved dinah as much as we did :) shes no better but love outstands it all

  • I CAN NOT believe that I have never heard this before. I always loved the original country version by Hank Snow but I never heard it sung this way before. This is great.

  • brook benton has an amazing version of tis......

  • A National treasure.

  • Dinah could sing anything, this was a country song that was originally sung by Hank Snow. She also covered material by Hank Williams.

  • You are so right both of them are worthy of a movie potrayal.

  • I had never heard this song before, never heard of Dinah Washington before. I'm so glad that now I have. It's amazing. She's incredible.

  • Dinah was truly a national treasure, she and Ella and Marion Montgomery were fabulous vocalists. For those who liked this one, I would suggest you listen to her rendition of "Dream" she does a chord change in the middle that is absolutely marvelous.

  • someone knows if this song is on record?

  • @heyhit yes it is on record.

  • i hope bein named dinah washington too, i don't end up like she did

  • @verrazano3 you won't

  • What an amazing voice and presence! !!!!!!!

  • THIS IS PURE GOLD!

  • What I can't believe is that there are 6 "dislikes" posted...This is the Queen...flawless and unmatched!

  • The best!!!!!!

  • my goodness, she is one of the best voices ever!

  • @millfordsange THE BEST

  • she is so cute

  • awwww man........makes me glad to be alive to watch and hear this wooohoooooo

  • Yeaaah!!!!

  • I am waiting for someone to do a movie about her life. She was a very interesting person and I have never heard a voice so beautiful and precise in enounciation as Lady Dinah.

  • It's a Don Robertson song, if I'm not mistaken, a part of a Hank Snow hit catalogue also.

  • @ChuChu353 same here, i fell in luv with her after watching that same show

  • This woman helped me to recover from a bad break up... this is the song that uplifted me...and I love her for that :-)

  • where's the sound???

  • When was this video recorded?

  • Dinah live! wonderfull! thnx

  • Her phrasing is just a touch too fast.

  • Every female jazz, blues and pop singer living today should get down on their knees for a moment to thank this woman. Her voice and musicianship is simply magic....

  • Wasnt this song also done by Ann Marget?

  • This song helps me get over the hard hits I've received. Thanks so much!!

  • go..... dinah

  • I have been taken with her voice since high school. I love her even more now that I can watch her in these videos.

  • good god almighty she just belts it out like it's nothing. soooooo very jealous!

  • RIP lady Dinah...

  • Great version of a Hank Snow classic...

  • Dear Dinah... you're so beautiful and your voice just makes me fly every time I hear you... Miss you, Lady Dinah!!! RIP

  • You never you out of my mind

  • Loretta Divine is equipped to play Dinah Washington -

  • OMG...I thought exactly the same thing. There is no other choice if they make a movie about her.

  • @sexymike717 YOU ARE OH SO RIGHT ON POINT with that one!!!!

  • Pure saucy, sassy, sexual fun and excitment in song.

  • Cool

    ,

  • una pantera, que prodigio de voz y estilo, no se ha vuelto a oír una voz como esta en el jazz. I love Dinah!

  • Hollywood lost its one and only chance only one woman could bring Dinah to life in song, looks and temperance. The late great Nell Carter.

  • @pookiechristopher loretta divine could play her...

countess vaugh as the younger dinah....?

  • @buddyjb5 Buddy your right I did not think of that also Mandesa would . She sang this song on American idol its on u-tube look it up. Also Jill Scott possibly What do you think?

  • naw Jill scott dont have that fire dinah had u see it in her eyes... I know people still scared of Dinah!lol Madesa might could be coached in to that firery personality an actress would need..(a la Jennifer hudson). lets face it... dinah was no bed or roses!!! lol I hope somebody will tell Dinah's story soon!! she was a character.... i knew one her dress designer.

  • Hey Buddy,

I knew a guy who was a gospel record producer in knew hwe when she was Ruth jones playing piano for Sallie Martin

(gospel) and her name was Ruth Jones she was something even then.(lol). So you are right she was something else.

  • @pookiechristopher Nell would have been so good! Now just need somebody who could play both of them.

  • Sure, the sound and video quality are half a century old, but this lady could perform and boy could she deliver a song!

  • Thanks for posing this one

  • i just LOVE her!!

  • WONDERFUL. she is the Lady. The Lady.

  • I love Dinah. We played You're Nobody Til Somebody Loves You at my mum's funeral.

  • great great great,,wow what an era.,.,.i was born in the 70s but right now i have a vision of dancing in a big hall in a gown and gloves with my man and outside the sky is full of bright stars

  • Nice see a good Hank Snow country song brought to a larger audience.

  • With todays camera tricks and make-up, Loretta could easily play Dinah. Loretta even has a sharp sound like Dinah's. However, they could get Sandra Kaye from Dallas to do the voice overs for all of the songs.

  • they would probably do it like Ray the actual records.... it would be something....

  • Is it me or does actress Loretta devine look like her long lost sister.

  • Lorretta does resemble Dinah and would have been ideal to play her in a biopic as she can act AND sing, but now at age 60, 21 years older than Dinah at her death, I'm afraid the best time frame for such portrayal has long since passed.

  • i disagree! camera lenses, etc... I've seen devine she look 40. dinah looked 40 to me! angela bassett played a 18 yr old tina.... she could do it for HBO at the very least....

  • i went through a really hard break up and this song is such an example of how i feel. now that the pain is gone, you feel so relieved and happy, dinah is so amazing, its like she knows me!!!! XDD

  • one of my favorites for sure. however ella fitzgerald always has been and always will be number one with me. dinah sure had some big eyes!

  • Ella and Dinah are really apples and oranges. Essentially two different generations of singers, emerging in two different eras of music (Ella in the Swing era, Dinah in the Bop/Early Rock&Roll era). Two completely different musical backgrounds and almost polar approaches to music...comparisons of the two will lead to a dead end.

  • The original Diva-before the term ever existed. ADORE this woman and her voice!

  • love her...

  • one of the greatest voices of all time!

  • Where's the sound?

  • turn it up a little bit, some vids uploaded are with low sound quality..

  • amy winehouse is not fit to even be mentioned in the same sentence as dinah washington.....

  • Ahahah! for sure.

    Did someone dare?

  • @cockneyjock53 You may get off your pedestal now. Artists don't need to be compared to each other, they each give what they can. The things Winehouse does would have been more than the norm back then, too.

  • @cockneyjock53 while Amy's style is certainly different than Dinah's Amy remains one of the finest and most astounding vocalists of the past 100 years.

  • dinah was one of greats. her voice is something that has this pure quality yet can be some what seductive. and it's unique and originally beautiful

  • Amy Winehouse!!!!! Man you've got to be kidding. She's not even in the same league. Dinah Washington could sing anything! As far as Miss Winehouse writing her own lyrics, I'm not too impressed with "no I aint; going to rehab" or whatever. Best thing for that girl would be to stay in rehab and listen to Diinah

  • ...and there it is!!! Thanks

  • Well said.

  • Amy is one of the greatest! That woman is something serious. She is definitely in the same league as all the other greats! Listen to [There Is] No Greater Love; live. Amazing isn't even the word. "Frank" is definitely a masterpiece. In my books it's one of the greatest albums of our time. I beg you to listen to the whole album. Her lyrics are AMAZING I don't know what you're talking about seriously. She is pure talent. Shucks... mi love me some Winehouse!

  • BACK TO BLACK is the masterpiece!

Amy is a talent to be treasured b u t Dinah could outsing her anyday

  • Wow Amy is alright, but this music will always belong to Black women, of the South, Bessie Smith, Ruth Brown, Billie, Ella, Dinah etc,.

  • and Hank Snow? Good music belongs to everyone.

  • @cammicty Okay she never tried to own their music jeez!!! and I'm Afro-Canadian BTW. But obviously I listen to a lot of American, Caribbean and British music. It's 2009 music helped to bridge those bonds between the races and she grew up on Dinah's music along with Ella, Frank Sinatra, Thelonius monk etc. So she heard more Black music growing up than white. She doesn't even really listen to white musicians. She just sings about her life in the jazz or soul style that she's used to!!

  • @Bonitaymorena First, I am sure you are young and no nothing about Dinah Washington, her life, or why she sang as she does. There are no singers today, especially Caucasian, that can even begin to know who Dinah was, or even feel her music. If you knew who Dianh was and what barriers she crossed, you'd understand. Especially, being Black from Canada, lol funny can't even comment on the music of Dinah. The USA was a different junglek when Dinah sung, & her music lifted many Blacks. We understood

  • @cammicty Actually it was the same in the Canada and I know plenty about that time period I studied jazz history for fun okay!!! Don't let some Canadians fool you because in Canada there were black people who immigrated from the US. and got treated just as bad and in Quebec were French Canadian live they owned slaves!!! Even in Nova Scotia were a lot of the freed slaves from the U.S. ended up the were forced back into servitude until some of them decided to go to Liberia and created Free town.

  • @Bonitaymorena I know all about the history of Blacks & their trek for freedom to Canada, as we have actual accounts in our family from some slaves who made it to Canada, many were even captured there as brought back. However, for the one's that made it life was much better than in the US, in most cases, especially during the 40' s & 50's, and this is the time period I'm talking about, Dinah's period. Dinah would not even sing at venues unless they let her come thru the front door. Some lady!

  • They don't even know who Dinah Washington is unless their into jazz music. There are many young black musician who don't get exposure but the can sing well. Amy doesn't even sing covers all the time which is what a lot of those other young jazz singers do okay. She just wrote her own songs and lyrically she's a killer and unless you've listened to her first album you can't even comment on her stuff because I'm sure Dinah would be proud and like it.

  • @THEJLG Yeah and she never said she sang better than her. Amy said Dinah taught her to sing!!!! She never does her covers only once she did Teach me tonight on Jools Holland but she idolizes Dinah!!! It's not about being better than someone it's about learning from you're predecessor and creating you're own style. In Frank she sounds more like Dinah anyways. Not Back to Black. For back to black she listened to Ray Charles & Ronnettes. She sounds like Ronnie in Back to black.

  • @Bonitaymorena As Cockneyjock said, Amy is not fit to walk in the same room as her, and if Dinah were alive, it would be a different scene. Dinah was bitter towards Whites, she talked about them stealing ''our sounds'' etc. Dinah was something! I was priveleged to see a play about Dinah's real life, Sharon Stone, Dinah Ross, were in the same room, there were only about 200 guest invited. Exact details, lol Mrs. Dinah did not play, she'd say how she felt in a minute about a person. cont,

  • @Bonitaymorena cont, It's funny how young people today, ( Caucasians) sing songs from Artist's like Nina, Dina, Billy, and they try to sing their songs. But, if we flipped the scene to their time, people, it would never happen. These were Artists, one must understand their struggles to sing their music, they were hurting from their life due to all the racial prejudice, there's much more to sing one of their songs, one must be able to out themselves in their shoes, know what they went through.

  • @Bonitaymorena Even the typical young black artist today can't feel their music. Artists then, especially, Black Blues Artists, entertained no copies of their music. They hummed to a different tune, the struggles about their lives. As far as I am concerned there is plenty of other Artist who's music can be imitated, but Dinah is one of those, like Nina, who should be left alone. Perfect Example, when Beyonce, tried to sing Etta James, Etta, was incensed, saying Beyonce, didn't have what it took!

  • @cammicty Ohh shut up!!! First of I don't even like Beyonce since Destiny's Child's first album she went from soulful Rnb too crappy pop music that she signs now. Stop acting as if the older generations are the only ones who know how to sings okay!!! There are young people who can sing like that and since when is learning from you're predecessor stealing? You and other people annoy me with you're snobbish attitude as if no ones allowed to carry on their legacy because their not black enough ??

  • @THEJLG the back to black album is a throwback trend product

amys first album frank was much much better and is less known

amy is good but she w=has a lot to prove with the next project

with or without mark 'maerketing" ronson

  • Amy has a talent that is far better then some of today's artists, but unless she gets her stuff together she could never measure up to Dinah. I love them both but Dinah is the best.

  • Sorry Amy can only mimic the likes of Dinah Washington. Give her props as a songwriter, but vocally not in ballpark vocally with Dinah.

  • @luvureally She's not mimicking Dinah okay she even said I don't want to sound exactly like her she can sings her ass off just like Dinah can!!! So stop acting like their the same person. Dinah is the predecessor and Amy is the student and never said she was better than her. That why with her second album she found a different sound and had matured her voice to create an even more distinct sound. Every jazz singer mimicked someone look at Etta she used to sound like her idol when she was young!!

  • And you should listen to You Sent Me Flying too. She wrote that at 16. True lyical genius. Hands down. Damnit just listen to the whole album! Lol! pCe.

  • @kweencessX Exatly people are such jazz snobs the act as if the younger generation can't do shit. A lot of young people don't know who Dinah is so at least Amy's parents exposed her to that good music and she learned how to sing from it.

  • BEAUTIFUL I ALREADY LOVE IT!!!!!!!!

  • perfect, amazing, awesome and beatufiul...

    R.I.P dinah...

  • Hmmm...I wonder where Diana Ross got that expressive, wide-eyed trademark she used during her "Supremes" days? Looks like we may be watching the originator :)

  • aw, come on. one of my favorite dinah washington songs, and i've never seen this before? she looks and sounds magnificent. will we ever again see another dinah, ella, sarah or nina, or is that era of massive, unique talents only preserved on vinyl, cd or video?

  • amy winehouse...and she writes her own lyrics.

  • i agree--i'm a huge fan. i just hope she doesn't self-destruct before we see and hear the full range of her talents.

  • Lol, it's time for the hype to die out. Dinah and the rest would sing/perform Amy into the closet

  • R.I.P

  • awesome! dinah's got a beautiful voice!!

  • This is a classic DIVA... she brought this incredible style to music and lead the way for the great talent to follow! Now I see why my Mom couldn't get enough of you. Long live DINAH.........

  • There are 2 reasons why this is one of the greatest Dinah videos: 1) Dinah is on familiar musical turf, the blues, which made her The Queen in the first place; and 2) Dinah is singing about herself: her need to be loved gave her 5 or more unsuitable husbands, so Miss D knows what she is talking about in saying she is finally over her man...and waiting for the next one to enter her life. There can and never will be another true artist like Miss Dinah Washington, love you 4-ver, Miss D, The Queen!

  • Thanks for the video! I think you have the title of the song incorrect, though. I believe this is part of the song "The Birth of the Blues."

  • This is the correct title. If you check out her catalog you will see it listed.

  • My favorite comment from Dinah, "What do you want me to sing??? Hell I can sing anything you want me too, I can even take you Church if you want me too."

  • THE BEST

  • F***in awesom

  • OMFG.... Thank you so much!!! I first saw a small portion of this live performance on VH1's Greatest Women of Rock & Roll countdown in 1999 and was blown away! After all these years, I finally have found that whole performance :-D It blows the studio recording away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • your welcome

  • This song just makes me smile. :)

  • Dinah pulled off the rare accomplishment of being an original, great artist and a consistent commercial success too. That is not easy and not common.

  • American Idol's Mandisa tore this song UP!

  • I wish I could singing it and meaning it. I still hurt.

  • Sorry for your pain. After awhile it will get easier to deal with. Until then, best wishes and a musical hug ..

  • I love this song and performance, thank you for posting!! Dinah is fantastic!

  • your very welcome

  • Ecoing the last comment. This song has helped me through it all. It gave me strength when I ended a relationship.

  • This song got me through a very dark, lonely, period in my life. I don't hurt any more Diana thank you for your soul, and belief I could get through the worst of times. You are missed, and cannot ever be replaced!!

  • Beleive it so they all have and were great friends. My mom sang professional and just 2 listen 2 some of the story in long Island when

they use 2 mey it was like a Private Black Soiety Clubs Lena Horne 2. In the early 60 Hattie Mae use 2 thro big Party and Lots of big Music star would sing Louis Armstrong, Sarah vaughn. It was until the next era it became Divided we stand. The Aretha Era!

  • What a great experience and to be able to relate it to this younger generation. God Bless you for that!

  • I wonder if any of the greats from the old era ever crossed paths, such as for example Mahalia, Billie, ella, Nina sime, Dinah and so on.

  • I just finished a book about her life. Dinah emulated and admired Billie Holliday. They were good friends and would fill in gigs for each other. Although, she always felt like Billie's drug use was unacceptable.

She loved Mahalia too. Also Dinah was friends with Aretha's Dad and Martin Luther King, Jr. Ella attended Dinah's funeral.

  • Ella and Billie greatly admired each others profoundly different styles.Ella was such a fan of Billie's that she actually asked for her autograph! There is a picture of these two together. Billie and Lena Horne were great friends too. Also There is a great story about Marilyn Monroe using her star status to get Ella booked into an all white club. Definitely look up that story. I know I'm getting off topic but its ironic that Monroe was viewed as dumb but was clearly way ahead of her time.

  • Classic, and Mandisa definatley did her proud :D very nice songg

  • Attention would-be-divas....THIS is how you sAng a song, you hear what I'm say'in?

  • She looks just like Aunt estra in this video : ) Well minus the glasses Aunt Estra

    Wears.

Do you hear her valbrado, I don't even know if I spelled it right, but man she got that natural stuff.

  • She could sing the phone book, and make it sound good!!!

  • Yeah!

  • Yeah!

  • woooow!

  • She was so fucking hot!!

  • eccentricXXX, como assim ???

  • what's that supposed to mean?

  • ill check it out thank you

  • Im 15 years old and i wish i was around for this music

  • Might I recommend Deborah Cox's Destination Moon cd, its a masterpiece and perfectly does this genre of music justice!

  • I have been wondering about this album. I had not heard anything about it. Guess I will pick it up over the weekend.

  • Chill.

  • Amazing, just amazing. They may have called her "The Queen of the Blues" or "The Queen of the Jukeboxes", but Dinah Washington had a whole lot of soul, plain and simple. It's wonderful to be able to watch videos like this of a true song stylist at work. No drum machines, no sampling, no voiceovers, just flat out musicianship all around!

  • THERE ISN'T ANYTHIGN LIKE THIS OLD STYLE FASHIONED MUSIC... i like other sutffs too. but this is just soo different.. -in a good way-

  • Wow!!!! Don't get much better than this!

  • yessiirrrr!!!!

  • Wonderful!

  • I get the shivers when i hear/see Diana

and also both Brook and Diana duets.

    Love em.

  • P.S. - Please Send Me Someone to Love.:)

  • LOVE IT - Dinah the Queen!!!

  • This woman can not sing a bad song.

  • totally agree witcha!

  • x 2

  • Excellent choice! Thanks for the post.

  • your welcome

  • I like Hank snow singing this in country western, but I think

she does one hell of a job on this song.

  • She's got what it takes all right!
