One time pool that gets progressively smaller bumps, unforgiving layouts, tenacious enemies, annoying hazards no continue. If ever a game deserved to get ripped to shreds, it's this.

Any particular reason they took lots of hits on purpose, or was it just showing off?

The game is much much much more difficult than it looks here. I've personally never beaten it in real time. The graphics and physics of the game are quite impresive for an NES game though.
