instead of doing a high-dollar mod like this, and having to remember to charge them, or constantly replacing alkaline AA's -- for the last year or two I have been using the new "lithiun" energizers AA's, and have had them in both of my radios for over a year and am still getting over 11v out of them.

I would suggest to plug the battery wire in parallel with the plug you glued inside. So it can be used as a charge jack and no wires would be visible and also not disconneted during transport.
