This was one of the main appeals of Rapture, after all: it was a place where "the scientist would not be bound by petty morality" - hence why Suchong was so good at what he did.

They literally don't do anything but that or sleep (I'm actually unsure if they eat... it's never said). But Jack also technically never had free will. He was literally made to obey anyone's orders that used the key command. They erased his memory for 2 years and then brought him back to obey more orders.
