He joined the SS in 1941 as a 18 year old teenager, and 5 years later he was a heavy-duty full fledged decorated veteran as a infanteryman first and later a tankman. A compelling soldiers story. Contrary to what many think, most waffen-SS men were elite soldiers who fought with honor. Albeit on the wrong side..

The Grossdeutchland division is fully comparable with the 1st, 2nd, 3d and 5th (and more, both Heer and WSS ) in division combat effectiveness. Renember Neither SS or (obviously ) the army were fully voulenteer, but the above divisions were. Another thing, having "their butts handed to them" never happened. These divisions lost many battles, but not without a damn hard fight. It was their standard practice to stick it out against overwhelming odds.
TheEidenschink, DUHHHHHHH. Hate to tell you something but evryone and every unit gets their butts kicked every now and then when in periods of extended combat. That is a fact. Always expect losses, your own death or maiming included, and expect to get your rear handed to you more than once.
Probably the 'best' German division was Grossdeutschland. There is no such thing as a 'perfect' soldier. Waffle SS got their butts handed to them many times, and Rostov on Don and the Ardennes (the Bulge) are but 2 examples, Mortain, France and the Normandy Campaign are other examples. hard fighting usually but many they were nailed badly, just as any unit in combat is at least one time or another.

Probably the 'best' German division was Grossdeutschland. There is no such thing as a 'perfect' soldier. Waffle SS got their butts handed to them many times, and Rostov on Don and the Ardennes (the Bulge) are but 2 examples, Mortain, France and the Normandy Campaign are other examples. hard fighting usually but many they were nailed badly, just as any unit in combat is at least one time or another.

Grossdeutschland division also got their butts handed to them. Maybe you should read "The Forgotten Soldier" ..SS was better than Grossdeutschland.
