I hope I can have a bunch of dogs in heaven. They share their love with me here on this earth, and show me a little bit of heaven with their love and loyalty.
I went to see Tom T. Hall play at the Plattsburgh (NY) county fair back in the late 70's. It started to rain during his show and he invited a bunch of people up on stage to get out of the rain. A class act is how I remember old Tom.
My wife and I do animal rescue, take in strays, etc. We have 8 dogs ranging in size from 200 lbs down to 15 lbs. We also have numerous cats, and we have lost several pets (friends) over the years and each of them were, and still remain, very special. We are both in the medical profession and each of us are crazy about kids, but we don't drink (not even watermelon wine).
...and to you, 'rosemarrie443' - and your little squirrel! May he have plenty of nuts and friends in his afterlife. Our very best friends have nothing less than 4 legs.
at one time i had 4 dogs and all of them had a perserality of their own, and i loved each for themsleves. and then lately i had a babyi squirrel, he fell out of the tree when his mother was gone and he was hungery , i loved him and he showed me so much fun. you would be suprised what they have to offer in entertainment. better than TV
I posted earlier, because my little 20 lb 'Bobbie-girl' crossed the Rainbow Bridge on Nov 20th this year (2 weeks ago). She was my best 4-legged friend of 17 1/2 years and the only doggie of my adult life. Even through my tears, Tom T. Hall knows what he's talking about.
Classic Country the way it was meant to be...brought up on this music along with Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins, Gene Autry, Hank Williams, Tenessee Erie Ford, Ernest Tubbs , etc...brings back fond memories of childhood...melts away all the stress and drama of today !
sosorry to hear about your dog- i had to put down my best friend rinie of 14 years, its very hard. they love you no matter, i truely loved him. and miss him very much. my heart is with you, chris turick
I had a similar experience to this song when I was a teenager in the 1960s. I was pulling weeds in my parents' garden, and the live-in gardener next door engaged me in conversation. He told me all about his army experience: in World War One!
This is my all-time favorite from 'The Storyteller.' It harkens back to simpler, more meaningful times without so much disruption in society. Tom T. Hall has always had the great voice, the tunes and the words to express the essense of a once-proud nation. We need men like him, again, to bring back a heritage founded on truth - and simplicity. God bless you, Mr. Hall - always well done!
wish nashville would dropdead. they don't know what good music is ,it is all about business and money and is boring...tom t is the man! listen to his song about "come on back to nashville"
old dogs and children and watermellon wine it doesn't get ant better than that or 'I don't think Hank done it this way' country music allways tells a great story then again so does Pink F lyod or my personal favorite Mr. Warren Zevon
i had a friend who once got drunk with ol tom t. he swears to this day that tom started crying and told him "what i wrote about in that song was true - ain't but 3 things in this world worth a solitary dime..."
@betherin82 so sorry about your riley....thats my dogs name....and i love him like you do...their lives are way too short...will miss my Riley one day...hopefully..he will outlive me.
@tehshadow23 It doesn't.......moron ! That is what I was trying to point out to that idiot Cartmen89. He was the one who said this was racist and I simply quoted the words of the song, to prove IT IS NOT !!!!!!!!!!!!!
guess that's why I live in China...but I wish I were as astute, culturally aware, and witty as you undisputedly are...
the mind boggles that you have never heard rap, or hip hop, or of songs by the likes of Johnny Rebel (google) and think a by Tom T , is somehow 'raciest' perhaps you could enlighten the rest of us Anglophiles Mr Sensitive? We'd love to read yr brilliant analysis of a song by a man who has 11 #1 hit songs, with 26 more that reached the Top 10, including pop...
we don't doubt that the Grammy award winning artist who has written songs for, among others, Johnny Cash, George Jones, Loretta Lynn, Waylon Jennings, Alan Jackson, and Bobby Bare. We don't doubt that he is racist and that this is a hate anthem because hey, you said so, and you are obviously a bright kid, which is why you assume I'm a redneck and it never crosses yr mind I might actually be African-Chinese.
@dawsonb hey, dont ever let someone say chinks cant see out there eyes, because they can, because they can. just because you cant see there eyes, doesent mean there not there.
@TheCartman89 ------You dude are the bigot. calling people redneck. well, the 99% of us that see you for the racist, bigoted troll you are, have 0 concern about your nothing opinion. bye bigot.

Just checked on Wukipedia... Tom wrote this song, and if I'm not mistaken, it might have made it into the Aussie top 10 back in 72/73.
Great song...I'm gonna play it again...
