good point there, health care should be accessible to everyone! i hope obama will do something about it, lets not forget though that he started his presidency right in the middle of a crisis, he will probably need some time to fix things up, but im positive :)
I think we all want the same things. I met Democrats and Republicans alike in my years as a "gate-keeper" and most were shocked at the financial realities of our system. Most of us agree that something must be done. We just have different ideas on the approach. As someone who was uniquely positioned to see the best and worst in our healthcare system and who now sees various models in Europe, I support Obama's plan as the best on offer at this time. Thanks for your thoughtful comments.
...However, the U.S. is unique in that big profits for investors and top execs are part of that budget. We rely on our government to protect us from attacks, from fire, from discrimination, etc. Why not protect our health as well? Less than 3000 people died in the tragedy of Sept 11 and we have spent billions on war as a result. Six times that many (over 18,000) Americans die every year from lack of insurance. Isn't it reasonable that we protect our citizens from that danger as well?
Robotsworld, I also don't consider Italy's healthcare program to be a model for the U.S. It has its own problems and there are better examples in Europe and Canada. But despite its problems, people in Italy are not denied life-saving treatment on the basis of insurance coverage alone. And the below mentioned colonoscopy could just as easily have been denied by an HMO for the same reason. No policy--private or public-- covers everything everyone wants. There is always a budget...
Mahiney, I agree that Obama's plan will probably not give true universal coverage, but I don't know that Americans are ready for a government plan, unfortunately. And I agree that his plan is better than McCain's. Letting the "market" control something as important as our health is irresponsible. Huge profit margins, stock dividends and obscenely high salaries should not be part of a healthcare system in which 50 to 60 people die every day due simply to lack of insurance coverage.
Obama does have the better plan, but not the best. Ultimately free healthcare would be perfect. Insurance companies should not be in it for the profit. Or they should be gone altogether. They cannot be trusted with our health. I think Obama's plan needs a little work, but still the better option of the two.
My friend lives in Italy. She wanted to get a colonoscopy because of her age and family history. The gov't decline to pay for it. She could pay a private doctor for this procedure out of her own pocket. BUT she cannot afford it. No colonoscopy for her.
So she is getting there what she would have gotten here (US). At least if her arm was chopped off she could get it put back on without having to go bankrupt. Maybe she should complain of pain or bleeding. I am not so sure what her particular situation was, but I have not heard one complaint from someone I knew out of the 10+ people I have had long conversations with about healthcare.
She didn't get the colonoscopy. Gov't would not pay for it. Why should she have to complain of pain or bleeding? This is procedure would be "preventative." "ARM CHOPPED OFF" boy you think of the most "out there" examples. But she would receive treatment here also. She NEVER complained about anything healthcare while working and living here. STILL REDUCE THE EMPIRE THEN TALK ABOUT HEALTHCARE SERIOUSLY.
I'm not sure what you mean by gov't. In Italy the gov't doesn't decide about medical issue, the National Health System does (SSN). If your doctor suggests a colonoscopy, you can get it for free if you have an exemption (old age, low income, etc) or otherwise pay a fee which is usually around $30-40. Unless your friend was not an Italian citizen or a legal resident of course, which might explain why she didn't have access to the Italian SSN.
At first I wondered what Obama and healthcare had to do with the Colosseum. However, after a bit of a slow start (you love that cute dog Buster very much....:), I became impressed by your video's power in clearing the smog around the healthcare debate and exposing the simplicity at its core, and by your direct connection of the issue to the electoral choice facing America soon! Fabulous job! May Obama help move things towards sanity! ("Sano" in Italian means both sane and healthy...)
Ottimo video! Ma il cane vota pure?
Way to go Alison! Informative and straight to the facts of why our approach to health care simply does not work. OBAMA 2008 for HEALTH-BASED HEALTH CARE. Thanks so much for the excellent video.
I agree with you, FC, I hope we Americans are going to be patient. It's a big job and we all need to help.

Great video, lovely dog and important subject.
Your figures might be conservative, considering all those patients who never go to the hospital knowing it would bankrupt them.
Those die at home not even trying to get help when they could or should.
