Bryan Singer's treatment of the movie was sort of a continuity of Richard Donner's Superman in the 70's. Welling's potrayal is more of a modern era Superman. The term they use in the comics world for this is "retconned." They start from scratch and revamp the character.

Actually...Bryan Singer is getting sued for "Superman Returns" by the Shuster family. So, it doesn't make sense to bring him BACK. Brandon Routh still isn't sure whether to do the role or not. I did think he was good for the part. and Donner hasen't been involved with Superman since the first half of "Superman II". WB fired him after he filmed half the movie and then another director filmed the second half. Watch the Special Features. The role was NEVER brought to Tom's attention. EVER! Liar.

The producers wanted a flying Batman movie, Parry White would say "Superman Lex Luthor is using his laser ray to steel the Yankee Diamond" then Superman would respond "I'll Stop him! Up Up and away..." Then Superman would mistaken Kojak "who loves ya baby" for Luthor and the audience was expected to laugh. Donner delivered a real Superman that is why he was fired.
@HMGen14 When the Superman movie was conceived, Welling was not considered for the part since Superman should be around late 20's or early 30's. Clearly he doesn't look that old to don the Superman costume and to portray that part. If they are doing Superman retcon then he could have been considered for the part. Mr. Reve was in his 50's not 60's when he died. You forget he was 24 years old when he filmed Superman in 1977. He would be 56 today. He looked older because of his condition.

but here is the thing. Christopher Reeve liked Tom Welling. But for the movie Brandon Routh actually got a Superman medalion from Reeves wife and giving him the ok to do the part.
So either way they both are good.

Medallion! Dude whatever! That doesn't matter! It's just a stupid piece of metal! One look at Tom, how he acts and brings out Clark AND Superman! And, I KNOW HE's Reeve's heir! Screw Routh! He can keep dreaming! Although, he looks great as Bizarro! Tom is Superman, Brandon is Bizarro, end of story!

Tom Welling is fine for Smallville, but he's not Superman. The whole point of the series is to focus on Clark Kent. Welling would not translate well as the Superman aspect because he's already instilled in the Kent persona.

That's what so many people fail too realize, is that, Tom has grown so much in the role over theses past SEVEN YEARS, that, he has transformed into Superman! Yes, he's not wearing the tights, he's not flying around, but, I just look at him, listen too him, and, remembering that HE, not Brandon Routh, but, Tom himself, personally knew Christopher Reeve! Tom IS Superman! Tights or no tights! (Personally, he looks awesome in the Superman tights!) He's Superman! And, he know's it!

one thing stupid about smallville, unless clark wipes every bodies memory thn there is no way hes gonna pull off being superman and as for clark he aint too good either cos clarks supposed to be geeky and shit..which he is not but it still is an awsome show anyway.
