I don't agree with Sowell's suggestion of using force (law) to break up unions. In a true free market. give the employer the right to hire and fire who they want and only force union workers not to hinder employers in doing so (blokking entrances in demonstrations etc) Problem solved

Is it better to give a bit of relief now & trap people in that situation or let them be uncomfortable enough to be productive and climb out of poverty? What about their children? Is it better for them to teach their children to suck off the gov or is it better for them to teach their children to go to school, learn, and stay out of poverty? We have seen multiple generations with their hands out. How much more?

Conservatives don't necessarily want big government. Most of them think the government's already too big. But I would guess that if Dr. Sowell were forced to declare a political affiliation, I suspect it would be libertarian. But he analyzes social phenomena as an objective economist, not as a politician.

Rush promoting Sowell is a good thing. Sowell is not NEARLY as well-known as he should be, and Limbaugh reaches millions of people. So however Sowell gets exposure is ok by me.

Sowell is brilliant but he is an individualist with not much use for politicians. So he's not remotely interested in making the compromises politics entails. Good for him.When he says something, I can trust it.

@Ipetratz I know he's a conservative which is why I disagree with a good deal of what he says, but his views on race and social ills are fascinating. He's one of the few people to tackle the concept with sanity..

Sowell, being a conservative, prefers a decentralized model of government whereas Limbaugh simply does not. Limbaugh also only pays lip service to free markets. Sowell is a conservative. Limbaugh is a Republican-style "conservative, and I personally think Limbaugh has issues with race.

@AshillaBeige I think you are confusing conservatives with libertarians, conservatives tend to be for big government, like Bill O'Reilly and Shawn Hannity. Libertarians are the ones that want little or no government, Sowell really falls more into that category.

@AshillaBeige When you say he is a conservative, you are wrong by todays standards. He is a libertarian. In favor of both social and economic liberties. Government hurts more than helps. You are just lumping him into a category with all the other republicans who start unjust wars, increase spending, print money, and are not much different from the democrats. He is not a George Bush, Bill O'Reilly, Rush Limbaugh republican. Sowell is a true example of what the republicans should be.

@AroundSun He's not a libertarian. He's close, but his views on foreign policy are conservative in the more "Republican" sense although no where near as bad as a typical Republican.

He certainly is not a typical conservative. I mean conservative like Goldwater-conservative.

And Thomas Sowell opposes equal marriage rights AND believes in marriage as a state institution. Maybe you should learn a person's views before you comment on them ;)

Sowell is for decentralized government whereas Limbaugh (like Glenn Beck) pays some lip service to the concepts of small government, but would still have protectionism, a large military industrial complex and ESPECIALLY social constraints.

Sowell/conservatives -> decentralized govt. Limbaugh/neocons -> centralized government.

If you still can't tell the difference between a conservative and a neoconservative, I can't help you, hun.
