We own that game, I hate that game (not because it's bad), we never managed it to get further than that weird castle at the right side and I like the music of the Gensis (though the PAL versions are slower in terms of music of course)
I remember I read somewhere, long ago, that videogames where good for your brain (memory). No wonder... you had to fucking record (in your head) the whole game to beat it.
omg we used to have this game but died when we got to the beast in the wall went the other way instead then when we got to the building and new area....we died everytime =/ we gave up after having no progress after a couple of years
This game relies far, far too much on level memorization and trial and error. The music is very cool, but the gameplay itself is utter and complete shit.
That's not true at all... while it's true it was much more common back then, there are lots of old games where you don't need to memorize levels/enemy patterns to succeed.
im 21 years ol man i had forgotten about this game as soon as i herd the music man i had a flashback from wn i wz a kid playing the game dont know what made me look for this game cant believe that 11 years passt by
hey laffer you must really love this game, you a lot about it. i respect that i have very good memories about this myself, very cool video game thanks for posting it
why so many complains bout the music's tempo...in my most humble opinion, I think-
scratch that-BELIEVE that, except for the intro, the speed of the USGenesis music is actually better-u read dat rite:BETTER-than all the others! otherwise yer right, it's missin a few things gamewise.hope I don't get too many hate letters out of this!
I did own the megadrive pal-version years ago. I used to sit at the piano trying to play the songs. The speed of the music in this version is ridiculous , and definitely not the original one. Well, the us release could have this error, and the pal-release would be correct. But I can't imagine that they would be so clumsy as to release a game with accidentally sped up music. No way! The original tempo may well be faster than the amiga version, though, but not this fast.
"This is due to a sloppy conversion; the original had a 50Hz refresh rate, but all Sega Genesis games had to have a 60Hz refresh rate due to being made for NTSC televisions. Accordingly, the conversion team increased the refresh rate to 60Hz, but did not change the amount of time each frame remained on screen, making it run 16.7% faster than the original."
So the NTSC version was faster due to sloppy porting.
The gameplay might have been be faster, but I don't see why the music would be sped up since it was rearranged for the Genesis version (by Tony Williams, I guess). Anyway - one thing I can say with 100% assurance is that the PAL version plays at the same tempo as the Amiga version. You can hear the music the way it's supposed to sound, on project 2612. My suspicion is that the fault lies in this emulation - but I'll find out soon.
I doubt the fault lies in the emulation. I've read in several places about the game and music being too fast - at first, I suspected the emulation as well but after reading all that and trying several emulators, I think the game simply is like this.
The PAL version would be normal obviously since the entire problem lies in converting it to 60Hz.
The Japanese version is normal as well (and has some improvements as well).
So Psygnosis ripped off themselves? I like both versions, the amiga version seems visually better, and has nice percussion sounds in the music. But I strongly like the music of the megadrive version, sounds more unified, and feels darker. But don't forget the C-64 version.
I disagree. The Amiga one has very nice graphics, but the PCE Super CD-ROM one has the advantage of awesomeeeeeeeee studio remixed songs. They are REALLY great....
and the Amiga ones gameplay is a bit goony. The up to jump, and slightly laggy punching is no good when compared to the PCE CD's smoothness and fluid controls.
does anybody know where to find the song in 00:40 when you enter the tree....i've loved this song ever since i first played shadow of the beast on my sega genesis many years ago.....so PLEEEEASE HELP!!! :)
I hated this game as a kid. I used to rent it. I remember it was one of those goofy looking EA cartridges with the yellow tab on it. WAY TOO DAMN HARD!!!
It's a horrible port. Due to sloppy porting, it runs faster than it's supposed to making it harder than it was meant to me. This is probably the hardest Beast version and all due to sloppy porting.
Geeez, they really destroyed the background music! The graphics are ALMOST like the Amiga's. I noticed some of the enemies sometimes have the same color gradients as the background indicating lack of colors or inefficient raster control.
This game is so God damn hard, good job.

A very faithful port of the Amiga original, including the music (though not as good, but much better than the stupid SNES-version)
One of the few Genesis games which was optimized for PAL and running too fast on NTSC-machines (normally it was the other way around)

perhaps some directx problems

The music is played too fast in this emulation. I guess the whole game is faster than the original.
armakuni 3 years ago
The music does not play too fast in this emulation, it's emulated fine. The game itself was too fast, bad port. Makes the game quite a bit harder.

You can hear the music in original tempo by downloading the VGZ file from this page: project2612 . org

And I know how fast these tunes are supposed to be, I've played the original Amiga version tons of times. I have a longplay of that version as well.

Actually, this version is crap. The music is horrible and due to the sloppy porting, the game runs faster than it's supposed to.
IF you want to play this game, you should really play the Amiga version instead which is FAR superior.
