What is the plant you have floating at the surface? I have a tank going with lucky bamboo (tops emersed) and I thought the plants you have floating would look really nice and make a good surface cover for my betta. I was going to go with duckweed but your choice looks much prettier! Thanks. :)
@imlostagainWTF It's from E-Bay. It looks different because the lotus flower he is sitting on is buried under the sand. Also he's not completely white (it was originally clean white). I sanded him down a bit, then applied ceramic stain (black) then wiped and scrubbed the excess off to give him an aged look.
I had a 20gallon amazon baby cichlid riparian type tank setup. With the 3 young fish dead from a hard Ich attack while gone for a week (still not sure how this happened!) I will set the tank up like you have it at 0:11, However I want to use live lucky bamboo shoots. Ever try that? ... Might try frogbit too to shade it more (No clue as to what fish yet)

@fuzzyfishable I think the best way to grow plants well is to pick the ones that are compatible to your water in the first place. I've had plants that, no matter the amount of fertilizers, good lighting and CO2 injections, still died because it wasn't compatible with my water chemistry. Good starter plants are anubias, ferns (java, windelov, philippine etc, but stay away from lace for now) and some mosses.
@nova72asu washed them in hot hot hot water then sun dried them for a long time. It held up for 6 months before I had to replace them. They'll get moldy eventually and needs replacing, but drying them properly lets you keep them longer.
@Kingfatboyrsr09 Yes they're real plants, no I dont have to take them out when I clean the tanks. I do a mini-siphon to clean the debris between plants so it doesnt disturb them that much.
Really cool! this inspired me to start putting live plants in my 10 gal. AM new to live plants... Any suggestions for newbies to obtain beautiful landscapes like yours??? THanks.
so do you just get a hold of plants and then put them in your tank or do you grow them i guess im not sure how people do this if that makes any since lol

@famousstunners lol, just joking. It depends on the type of plant, really, because some need a special substrate, or CO2 diffusers, or special chemicals that need to be added for nutrients, or special types of lights. The easiest plant to start with is java moss, imo, because you just need to tie it to rocks with a fishing line and it will grow in any type of light (as long as it's on for 7-8 hrs/day). Plus, it doesn't need any nutrients or anything, since it's fine with just fish poo.
thanks for all the love guys, much appreciated. please visit my blog at TankScape (dot) com for pics and more tank info. You can also see my other past projects and current ones on that blog :)
@feenin4u247 with fake plants, or with rocks and twigs, sure! But definitely no live plants, your turtles will eat them. Just use decor that are heavy/big enough that they cannot uproot/topple it over.
@thisshittake4ever only used fertilizer tablets on the heavily planted areas (stem plants) on some of the set ups. I did CO2 for my first tank, the rest are low tech tanks.
they grow in a substrate gravel is a type like onxy sand and florite. all plants will need nutrients if the substrate has none then yes u need fert. unless its a moss or something like that it draws nutrients from the water.
you know those zinc(?) plant weights that come with some stem plants? I wrapped them at the tip of the bamboo and buried them deep. Also helps keep them from floating off.
Liquid fertilizers and fertilizer tablets. My substrate's not as fancy as some hard planted tank geek's substrates lol. But most importantly, if you pick the proper plants for your water type, then you should have no problem growing them. (ie. pick soft water plants if you have soft water, hard water plants if you have hard water. Soft water plants will melt and die if you have hard water. Same goes for hard water plants in soft water.).
hey i have a 15 i think bigger gallon tank..i had just recently upgraded my betta fish by transfering him into the 15 gallon...any tips should i fill my 15 gallon tank with water all the way? because it might be to much pressure idk..pm
I dont see any reason why would it not be able to take the water pressure. If it were a reptile tank, then you might have a problem since their glass is usually thinner than fish tanks.
tanks over 20 gallons and made with very thick glass in order to how the water, anything below that is made with a thinner glass because the weight isn't too much to handle. the manufacturer made the aquarium to hold water, therefore, you should fill it. Please remember that if your filling it near the top, it needs a lid as bettas are known for suicide attempts.
It will rot eventually. Anything organic that you place in water for a long time will rot. The trick is how to prepare the bamboo sticks so that they last longer and does not foul up your water. My bamboos lasted me almost 5 months (if I remember it correctly) before I had to replace them with new ones.
that happens, its anoying. you just have to keep pushing it down until it gets rooted. sometimes using a few larger pebbles around the base can help. you should probably gently take the plant out of the pot and remove any rotting/damaged roots then divide the individual plants (there's usually 3-4 in each pot) so they'll get more light.
growth tablets that you put under the gravel at the plants roots are very useful for keeping plants healthy.
That christmas moss is awesome. by the way were did you get the Buddha I'm thinking of making an asian style theme, that would be the perfect touch. 10/10 aquarium.
