@zul24 Of course he doesn't have a chance against these guys... That's because they actually know what they are talking about... And none of this video has to do with conspiracy either. It is mostly about how Mos Def somehow doesn't know the objective/mission of the Taliban due to his ignorant, "gotta see it to believe it" mentality. Oh and one more thing, I am definitely not Mormon, nice try though (not really).
He's actually playing a perfect allegory for the political situation. He puts himself in a position that disagrees with the common view, by a few innocent questions, and he gets a barrage of critique leading to the questioning of his personal values. A little longer and we would have painted a long beard on him.
Sorry but what? He says he doesn't believe the media and he wont take anyone's word for it. Yet he has not taken the steps to find a trusted translator like Hitchens said, and just outright saying nothing is explained.
If you don't agree with Hitchens ur a idiot: I don't dig that sentiment. Hitchens keeps putting words into his mouth and claiming that he says and means shit he hasn't said. Thats bad discussion.
Sir Hitchenschannel Mos Def is doing what all of us should do question the things we are told. We are told by media on behalf of conservative politicians that Iraq is bad, has nukes and supports AQ. We believe it because we don't question what we hear. A disastrous war was the result of this. Intelligent people question, this is also why for example extremists regardless of denomination refuse or inhibit education and knowledge sinse these concepts teach you to question what u hear.
@person661982 Not sure who here said there was something wrong with him, but I think he's cool. He makes really good music and he can be funny. But in this discussion he reveals he is not as educated enough as a person, or on the topic of the discussion at hand, to hold a conversation with these guys or provide any meaningful insight.
Yo Mos Def. Yeah you be strong enough to have an unpopular opinion. Be strong enough to admit when you are ignorant of an issue. Silver tounged orator, know what I'm sayin?
Mos Def is religious. Religion is crazy, but what's crazier than religion is the fact that he has educated himself. He went to art school. Born in Bed-Stuy, and educated himself. He's not sympathizing with Islam, he's sympathizing with the oppressed. Fuck this description. You are a 30 something and posted this description, which shows how gone you are from society. Everybody is religious atheists. We are the few, fight the fight the right way. Denouncing Mos Def, because he's religious. Dumb.
@bryanfountain Did you watch the video? It said nothing other than one versus the other and that's what it was. How dare the poster be 30 something!
The whole point is that Mos Def admitted to his own ignorance and that there is no excuse for given his life, he can hire a translator if that what he needs. If he thinks all translators are in the pocket of the govt. then he's just a paranoid idiot.
@bryanfountain the quality of that "self-education" is on full display here- incompetent, sparse and clearly, he forgot to educate himself in the areas of debate. Mos Def will believe a Muslim who says this and that about what the terrorists are about- but when it comes from a white person- forget it- he's not buying it. Mos Def, aka Yasin Bey, is racist, ignorant and unfortunately very talented on the mic- so look forward to hearing lots of misinformed bullshit over 4/4 beats.
Mos Def kinda dug himself a hole there. Im sure hes actually a pretty smart guy, but you can kinda sum it up by saying: Even if you dont know anything about Al-Qaeda's manifesto or their political worldview, the fact that they sent terrorist agents to infiltrate the US and slam 2 passenger airlines into the Twin Towers, causing over 3 thousand innocent people to die, oughta tell you enough about them and why they are evil sons of bitches.
@dre79ful I love the U.S. of A., but it's all over the planet wrecking havoc. No 3rd world country is gonna try to fight the U.S. army, so they surprised us.
@disandthat yeah i'll agree with that. but its not just about world domination, its about religion too. US of A is the Great Satan according to jihadists, and it wouldnt matter how many pies you had your fingers in internationally, the fact that you represent the master infidel and therefore the greatest enemy of Islam is enough to make em hate and wanna kill you.
So disappointed how Mos Def let himself down with his lack of research and education on the subject. Rappers (of which i'm one) usually attempt to offer such social commentary but it just goes to show when most of them step up from talking to the streets they're way out of their depth.
Christopher Hitchens acted like he was an atheists, yet mostly picked on Muslim fundamentalism. He rarely talked about Christian extremism. i think he was a closeted Christian.
@disandthat He picks on christian fundamentalism quite a bit as well there are a few videos here of it. But he does seem to pick out the muslim extremists more.
@MACHIN3K1NG - You need to read or watch more, he crushed christianity over and over, but Islam is more clearly militant. It's also better for the broadcasters to focus on Islam, and those who attack it, as it subtley 'justifies' more illegal, resource-hungry wars.
@disandthat@disandthat Its normal to pick on Muslim fundamentalism more. There is more cause for concern with Muslim fundamentalism. The whole concept is that Islam is supposed to rule the world and anyone who opposes or does not submit to it is going to die. Christian fundamentalism is less of a problem nowadays but the threat of Muslim fundamentalism is ever-increasing.
I wonder how this debate would have gone if George Carlin was in Mos Def's position. Mos Def is debating very similar topics to what Carlin talked about on stage or when he was on the show and Carlin didn't take any shit. Love to see Christopher Hitchens treat Carlin in the way he's treating Mos.
@marcyliam Both times he was on the show he gave some interesting insight. The first time, I believe, was the better of his two. If you're asking whether he's -on par with Hitchens intellectually, I think you're off base. He was, however, a great comedian, and was probably the most cerebral entertainer of all time (my opinion)
I thought it was relatively clear what Mos Def's unpopular idea was: that he did not accept the "story" of Bin Laden / Al Quaeda / Taliban that was posited by the corporate controlled American media. Not necessarily because he had a different view about Bin Laden / Al Quaeda/ the Taliban. But because he understood that alot (possibly most) of what passes in the United States as "news" is really spin / propaganda
Rushdie clearly asks Mos Def to "Express the unpopular idea" and he failed. I agree that he was way out of his league here, but that doesn't make up for the fact that he asked a question, and refused to accept the answer (despite it coming from two of the world's leading public intellectuals) because it didn't fall into his poorly constructed vision of the situation. He expressed nothing and got defensive when they called him on it. That's how blatant ignorance should be dealt with
this is upsetting because one would think mos def and hitchens would side with each other... mos def thinks that 9/11 was an inside job and that bin laden was fabricated by the government and media. there is little evidence for the existence of bin laden other than bad quality videos which a ten year old could reconstruct, no body.. nothing - surely hitchens would accept his statement in the same way he accepts the evidence for god - very little or none at all.
They put Mos Def on here with 2 intellectual sounding corporate shills, they talk down to him and don't actually answer his questions, they are using something called LOGICAL FALLACIES. and any replies asking me what they are, look it up, its a lot to explain in a Youtube comment section. This is Mos Def's punishment for questioning 9/11 in an earlier episode and so they put him on here with these two white "intellectuals" who are experts at not actually answering questions.
@jakenichols Are you calling Chistopher Hitchens a corporate shill? Proof? Why are you defending Mos def? Frankly he sounded like he had no idea wtf he was talking about. Who wasnt answering questions? They answered all his questions, even when he repeated himself.
actually mos def is a pretty good artist, also some of the points he makes are legit, the other guys are shills. Also those old guys use logical fallacy to make their points. Mos Def questions the official story pushed by the corporate war profiteering media, those other guys push that same agenda.
Mos def was asking questions like what is their motivation they answered with things like oh they dont like our culture, but thats not answering his questions. Mos Def believes as do a good percentage of Americans and people worldwide that the US is CREATING AN ENEMY as an excuse to go on an endless "war on terror", Hitchens and the other guy just believe the BS that the war-profiteering media spouts, Mos Def is asking questions on an ESSENTIAL level.
Mos Def made a good point in saying that an election doesn't mean theres democracy, you know they had elections in Soviet Russia but the same evil dictator kept winning oh wow how did that happen? The problem is that the US is trying to FORCE democracy on people that A) don't care, B) don't want it, and C) are not our problem. That is why there are terrorists, is because we are using force, they are fighting back. its blatantly obvious if you step back and look at it,
his name is joseph stalin, he murdered like 50 million of his own people, way worse than Hitler. He even said that it doesn't matter who the people vote for, all that matters is who counts the votes. you are slow.
@jakenichols Why i asked which dictator was simply because they've had a string of them until recently. It would be hard to argue that the toppling of the Stalinist regime would not have been a good thing. Assuming that the Iraqi people dont care or want freedom is a gross misunderstanding of the situation
I don't know what's worse, how somebody thought it appropriate to have Mos Def head on the show as naive liberal knee-jerk or the person who agrees with Mos Def on these issues.
Why is he even there..... I mean couldn't they get another person who has an actual opinion not just asks simplistic questions in a conversation that is clearly not meant for them. Since clearly all the other three know what they are talking about and trying to explain it to him well will get you no where fast.
Clear win for Hitchens. Mos was clearly ignorant on the subject and made the issue personal to distract from this. Mos was out of his depth, but then again he should have thought twice about going on a political talkshow when you don't know much about the subject.
just trying 2 get an honest answer in politics...i feel wat mos def is saying, i don't trust media, they 2 trying 2 hide 9~11...do ur own research peoples of america...don't B programmed.
or you have a way of physically knowing what is happening anywhere, at any one time?
OR more likely you are a pseudo intellectual when it suits, just like mr Def, and is too lazy to seek knowledge or the education needed for objective thinking.
Mos Def is not a professional intellectual speaker. He may have been a little out of his depth, but he's not an idiot. Losing a debate to Hitchens is like losing a sparring match with Muhammed Ali - it's an honour to be involved, you've danced with the best, and you can hold your head up high and say you did it.
Hitchens, to Mr. Definitely: "I think it's a very stupid thing to have said...If I was you I would not have said something so dumb on TV where you can be held to account". Heh, heh. No one could ever accuse Hitchens of being PC, especially to that dumb fuck Mos Def. Fool got his ass handed to him.
Mos Def asks probably the most critical question and when Ron Paul answered, Ron Paul was booed. Al Queada did not attack us because of our rap or rock and roll music or our infatuation with the Kardashians. Al Queada attacked us because we had troops in their holy land. Here Hitchens tries to make Mos Def look like a fool instead of answering his question.
@samsaraenlightment Mos Def did a beautiful job of making himself look the fool. Hitchens just drove the point home with facts and wicked humor. Couldn't stop laughing when he started calling him "Mr. Definitely" - that just about killed me.
Yes, Mos Def is most definitely out of his leauge here.
But I think folks are too hard on him. The questions he asks remind us that it is useful for people in a free society to ask ourselves how it is we know what we think we know. It's a point Hitchens himself made frequently.
No one really answered Mos Def's Question, just cited propaganda w out giving facts. Just bc u seen a video of Osama doesn't mean the translation is completely accurate. If u believe everyone on the news, ur keepin urself down. Also, Mos Def pointed out a fact, that in this country and anywhere in the realm of our empire, people might b persecuted, imprisoned, and/or murdered for expressing views that might not be along the lines of our governments plans for financial conquest.
mos def surprised me also. he did not seem to be very informed. it's peculiar that the old school rap artist like chuck D and professor griff of public enemy always held their own in situations like this. even rakim and krs-one would of showed they were more familiar and informed on the subject. it seems like the new generation spends more time talking about subjects than actually researching them.
Mos Def was right because it has never been defined what these two factions of political groups are fighting about...... The question still remains what are we fighting these people for!!!
surprised? fitty cent, puffy saun jon or whatever his same, Jay Z, these guys are all stupid - put them in the spot of having to intellectualize on any academic level and they of course fail - sports heroes, music moguls and other entertainers rarely have qualification to speak on highfalutin matters but we give them air time due to their fun time work that entertains us...
rarely are any of these people politically astute, historically savvy or in any way deserving of such a public forum
How can Mos Def be so certain about the other manifestos that he claims to know about if he doesn't believe what other people say or report about them?
I THINK HITCHENS WAS TOTALLY A LOSER IN THIS DEBATE BECAUSE IF YOU KNOW SO MUCH IT SHOWS MORESO WHEN ONE SHOWS HUMILITY AND RESPECT FOR THE OTHER INDIVIDUAL. ALL THREE CAUCASIAN MEN WERE OVERTALKING...MOS DEF IS THE OUTSIDER BLACK MUSLIM THAT WAS ASKED ON THE SHOW AND SPOKE HIS MIND ASKING VALID ?S AND WAS DISRESPECTED FOR IT. TOO MUCH DIVISION AND PARANOIA TRYNA GO THRU THE AIRWAVES AND MOS DEF SPEAKS FOR EVERYDAY PEOPLE IN EVERYDAY STRUGGLE... I RESPECT AN INQUIRING MIND MORE THAN AN ARROGANT1
@msasiadc83 When someone is as wrong as this african fellow you have to call him out on it. He is not being disrespectful, he is telling him straight without any fluff. It is Hitchens way.
Hitchens won in the argument and he also won at being a huge asshole. You can get your point across without sounding like an arrogant jerk. Intelligence is not greater than character.
@boboro999 I'll be honest, i'm not sure how else he was supposed to deal with the incoherent babble coming from Mos Def. Hitchens was trying to answer his question, and he went on some ranting tangent that really didn't connect at all. He was all over the place. If you've ever been in that situation, it's incredibly frustrating.
The discussion was well beyond Mos Def's level of expertise. He is paired with two giant intellectuals, with more than average reason to fear the groups mentioned and, are well versed on the topic along with Bill Maher who is no slouch himself. Not a good casting job by Maher. What Mos Def wanted to do is find a trustworthy source for the objectives of the Taliban and Al queda and not just what he has been told by the politicians and the media. Not appropriate here maybe but good questions.
@dnsmithnc Rushdie is NOT a giant intellectual. The only thing that ever made him notable was getting a fatwa against him. He is a terrible author, absolutely shocking considering how much recognition he now gets.
They re-invited mos def specifically to insult him because him and cornel west took the spotlight last time. That fat fuck wouldn't have tried that shit if West was there.
@TahRahJoh No. Cornel West took the spotlight last time. Mos Def was there for comedic relief. Who are "they," and how did "they" re-invent Mos Def? What ever happened to people taking responsibility for their actions? Mos Def brought his humiliation on himself. He is nowhere near the same league mentally as these three.
"That fat fuck wouldn't have tried that shit if West was there." Actually, he most likely would have.
Mos def should most definetely keep his mouth shut when it comes to world affairs such as they were trying to get at. He served his own ass in a silver platter. How can a guy that is not minimally prepared for talking about these things ever purport to intervene in the discussion? His exit strategy was that they were attacking him? PATHETIC by all accounts. What a pollitical chiuhahua! His trite pipsqueaks are nothing to write home about.
i give you a paraphrase by bill cooper- read everything, and believe nothing you cant prove to yourself to be true. mos was trying to gain an understanding of the ideology of this muslim agenda without the bullshit of mainstream media. rushdie and hitchens should have been able to give it. instead, he is attacked like a fourth grader asking what pussy smells like. this shows the dog pact mentality of man, if anything. hitchens and rushdie are scholars, but i think this was uncalled for
mos def speaks the truth .. i agree with most of what hitchens and bill believe in but they arent gods and to use their status's to discredit mos def is just plain stupid.

Dumb.
bryanfountain 1 week ago
@bryanfountain Did you watch the video? It said nothing other than one versus the other and that's what it was. How dare the poster be 30 something!
The whole point is that Mos Def admitted to his own ignorance and that there is no excuse for given his life, he can hire a translator if that what he needs. If he thinks all translators are in the pocket of the govt. then he's just a paranoid idiot.
MacktheFilet 1 week ago

MACHIN3K1NG 1 week ago
@MACHIN3K1NG - You need to read or watch more, he crushed christianity over and over, but Islam is more clearly militant. It's also better for the broadcasters to focus on Islam, and those who attack it, as it subtley 'justifies' more illegal, resource-hungry wars.

@disandthat @disandthat Its normal to pick on Muslim fundamentalism more.

But because he understood that alot (possibly most) of what passes in the United States as "news" is really spin / propaganda
kipwon 1 week ago
Rushdie clearly asks Mos Def to "Express the unpopular idea" and he failed. I agree that he was way out of his league here, but that doesn't make up for the fact that he asked a question, and refused to accept the answer (despite it coming from two of the world's leading public intellectuals) because it didn't fall into his poorly constructed vision of the situation. He expressed nothing and got defensive when they called him on it. That's how blatant ignorance should be dealt with

Mos Def asks probably the most critical question and when Ron Paul answered, Ron Paul was booed. Here Hitchens tries to make Mos Def look like a fool instead of answering his question.

Yes, Mos Def is most definitely out of his leauge here.
