John Ford, what a director! When he shot in black and white he used a heavy red filter that pushed the contrast level of the film that made the scene the hi-def of it´s time.
He also went to his grave with 11 pieces of metal from his filming of the Battle of Midway. This and The Quiet Man, are his best color films.
A friend of mine played poker with him, John Wayne, Sam Johnson and others. He lost everything but said it was the best night of his life.
old Ben Johnson. Seems like he was in every old John Wayne western. Always played a scout or loyal sidekick. Never had more than ten lines to say. I always thouht he was a football buddy of Duke's. Then I saw him in "The last picture show" and found out he was a real actor. And a good one.
@MontezumaUH60 Every division now includes an aviation brigade; intelligence has become a combat branch and includes long range recon in their battalions. The AirCav function has gone to the 101st Airborne.
Just a question: what is that fort protecting in that desert wasteland? Who in the right mind would build a farming settlement in such an infertile land?
@VersusARCH cattle. but mainly they are protecting the route to California. They are also maintaining law and order among hostile tribes, unemployed CSA veterans, bored cowboys and etc.
@VersusARCH it was more about the railroads. the railroads built in the area needed to be protected, as did the small towns that sprang up around them (like las vegas), as the railroads were how supplies were sent from the east to california and oregon.
@randolph65 cause they belong to a time where we don t know the historical truth . Not every body has the talent of John Ford to give esthetical credit to lies
I love this~~one of my favorites movies growing up. I think I started singing (and probably marching along) when I was about six years old. Yes, John Wayne was a patriot as was most of his co-workers. Things seem so much worse these days which is something we all need to work on to get America the way it should be. We need heroes like John Wayne again. Bless him and the USA!!
@MITCH0760 Yes, Captain Brittles is wearing the Medal of Honor. From the Civil War to 1914 revisions, the MOH --- which was the only U.S. military award for valor --- was worn on the chest. After 1914, both the Army and Navy MOHs (which have different designs) have been worn around the neck. Marine are awarded the Navy Medal and in 1947 another design was created for the new Air Force.
Director John Ford & Cinematographer Winston Hoch (Who won an Oscar for "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon.") wanted to capture on film the iconic paintings of the great late 19th century western artist Frederick Remington that featured the U.S. Cavalry. It is really amazing how close they came to doing just that.
The bugler riding behind John Wayne's Capt. Brittles is Frank McGrath, who had worked on John Ford films since the early 1930s and would continue until the mid-1950s --- including two daring horse falls in Ford's masterpiece "The Searchers" in 1956. In 1957, he would grow a beard & land the role of a lifetime as the whimsical cook Charlie Wooster in the classic western television series "Wagon Train" and would remain with it during its entire 8 year run. He died in 1967.
I liked the "Captain Darlin"' part in the movie and when he's asking who the sleeping dog belonged to. lol This is a great movie, just watched it last night. =) John Wayne has a lot of good oldies.
Hey, I just love it. I was a boy once...such great memories... me and Micky in our Texas' rangers guns and holsters. Loved the Duke in his films..second only to Charlton Heston,,,,Ben Hur and his performance are part of my life( Stephen Boyd wasn't bad either (for a Paddy). But hey, I grew up and couldn't handle their politics..still love you boys,,, God bless ya.

I regret my ancestors didn't come to this country during the 1800s then maybe one of my 'grands' could have served in the U.S. Cavalry.
