@41DJVILLAIN09 this song tells the story of the origin of the tatau. The image of the two sisters I guess is to relate that the two sisters who cane from Fiji with the tatau were instructed to take the tatau to samoa and that only women were to be tatooed.
@41DJVILLAIN09 Somehwere upon that journey they mixed up the instructions in their song and when they arrived in Samoa they instructed the people that only men were to be given the tatau. Today men get the tatau and the women the malu. There have been some discord with a woman getting the tatau i recall but at least now you know what the song is about. This song tells the story and is normally sung when people are gathered as the tufuga caries out this ancient traditional rite
The photo you're inquiring about is actually of 2 fijian women tatooing. Also, if you only understood the lyrics of this sacred song then you would understand why this photo is in this video. Do your research thoroughly before commenting.
Its ok chalefresh, where the pics from wasn't a concern of mine, just how it could better translate the song..lol.. thanks for the info though. take care

I'm sure the writer did such a great job in detailing the history of the tattoo with just a few paragraphs..lol.. Thanks for the comment ghettoflower09 have a great week
nice clips..jst goin thru our archives in fiji..n i did find out tht in the old days fijian ladies do have tatoo..n only ladies not fjn men...but i guess it suit Samoan better coz of trhe fair skin...coz fjn r much darker..lolz lolz...n i wish all hamo brothers out thr keep n b proud of thr culture..
Thanks for the research rockdalefijians and the infos, I'm sure a lot of us are proud of our uniqueness with our tattoo design and our culture. thanks for the comment and have yourself a great day
sole 4 me personaly see a samoan wear hisher too..show me he is proud of his heritage..BUT I WAS DISPOINTED to see other nationalities do wear samoan tatoo., here whr im live i see arabs,asian,palagi..(i do ask them if they have a connection to samoa..but most r not)..even my hamo bro ask if i 1 have samoan tatau..but i decline coz i knw its a traditional thing..so plz SAMOAN BROS..PLZ DON UTILISE IT 4 COMMERCIAL USE..
haha..I certainly hope not rockdalefijians, its a Samoan heritage a traditional heirloom....lol.. and your advice is most appreciative. hope all our bros have a heart as yours, love for our culture and an appreciation for our heritage. thanks again
For me, I think it's refreshing to have one outside of our culture to get something that we value (like a tatau etc) for them to own. Not so much as own, but having them look into our culture and seeing something deep within (lol) that is different other than their own lol
its cool...its as if they too want to be a Samoan lol
Most people that are traveling from one country to another are for education and cultural experience, but if one is truly and honestly respect and love to be a part of one's culture, then I think the elders could discuss the matter and go thru proper ceremonials to meet such need
now I'm confuse because you are confused Fiia08..hahaha... I bet its the same song, its just that, this group inserted some of their own style and flavor to it, such as awoi, and skip the last verse of the song..lol.. thanks for the comment
I think that there should be two distinct words (in palagi) for tatau and malu rather than having the common form of tattoo for both:D:D just my 5 cents addition to your collection:L
If it was more than 5 cents I would have looking for a palagi to provide me with 2 distinct words for the tatau and malu..hahaha..jks thanks for the comment trickDeze
lol oh I meant, coz I heard in that 'pese o le tatau' that when they changed the text, it became tatau men and not women...but...women are tattoed, just not given the tatau (obviously lol) so yeah, just thought, instead of tattoo in reference to tatau AND malu...should be a difference? e...ka'ilo lolz
Wow, I love these tattoos. When I go back home I want to get some done. I am Indo-Fijian though, would I offend anyone if I got one done to represent my place of origin?
no one should be offended if you tattoo yourself according to your feelings or passion for your place of origin. but thanks for asking take care Fijiana
I know..lol..the upper body tattoo looks similar but the samoan tatau have a basic structure and fundamentals that is unique to the samoan without it, its not a tatau. thanks again jusitke07 for the commnet take care
If you take a close look at the designs of Polynesian tattoos, they almost look closely related to that of South-East Asian tattoos. Particularly, the Philippines
it really doesn't matter what design or how the design look like, if it on somebody's body you'll know its a tattoo..hahaha..jks friend thanks for the comment
Is samoa your last name too?.lol.jks good that you heed the word of the aged for they carried wisdom.. just remember we embody the beauty or ugliness of our country the wisdom or foolishness of our parents.. our action will reveal either one, so just have fun but keep our country and last name in ou hearts

For me, I think it's refreshing to have one outside of our culture to get something that we value (like a tatau etc) for them to own. Not so much as own, but having them look into our culture and seeing something deep within (lol) that is different other than their own lol
its cool...its as if they too want to be a Samoan lol
trickDeze 2 years ago
Most people that are traveling from one country to another are for education and cultural experience, but if one is truly and honestly respect and love to be a part of one's culture, then I think the elders could discuss the matter and go thru proper ceremonials to meet such need

Awoi, awoi, awoi, awoi, awoi, awoi, awoi
This is the origin we know
Of the tattooing of the tatau in Samoa
A journey by the two women
Who swam from fiji across the ocean
They brought with them tattooing kit
with their unchanging song they sang
That said women were to be tattooed
And not men
awoi awoi
Tamaleaitu 3 years ago
Tamaleaitu legend also goes that we learned the art of tattoing from Fitiuta in Manu'a Samoa or Fiji........

I think that there should be two distinct words (in palagi) for tatau and malu rather than having the common form of tattoo for both:D:D just my 5 cents addition to your collection:L
trickDeze 2 years ago
If it was more than 5 cents I would have looking for a palagi to provide me with 2 distinct words for the tatau and malu..hahaha..jks thanks for the comment trickDeze

lol oh I meant, coz I heard in that 'pese o le tatau' that when they changed the text, it became tatau men and not women...but...women are tattoed, just not given the tatau (obviously lol) so yeah, just thought, instead of tattoo in reference to tatau AND malu...should be a difference? e...ka'ilo lolz
trickDeze 2 years ago
ok tattoo and taboo hows that....hahaha... sa'o oe trickDeze se ka'ilo..lolz..thanks trickDeze for the comment. take care

But the reason why men are tattooed
cause their unchanging song went wrong
Reaching outside Falealupo
They saw a giant clam
Then two women dived
And changed their song to say
Men were to be tattooed
And not the women

Pity on the youth now lying
While the tufuga starts applying
Alas, he is crying loudly
As the tottooing tool cut all over
Sir, sir, be bold and brave
T'is the sport of male heirs
Despite the enormous pain
Afterward you'll swell with pride
Awoi, awoi, awoi, awoi, awoi, awoi, awoi

Wow, I love these tattoos. When I go back home I want to get some done. I am Indo-Fijian though, would I offend anyone if I got one done to represent my place of origin?
Fijiana 3 years ago
no one should be offended if you tattoo yourself according to your feelings or passion for your place of origin. but thanks for asking take care Fijiana

I know it doesn't matter. I'm just commenting that Pacific Island tattoo designs looks very much like those found in the Philippines. That's all.
jusitke07 3 years ago
I know..lol..the upper body tattoo looks similar but the samoan tatau have a basic structure and fundamentals that is unique to the samoan without it, its not a tatau. thanks again jusitke07 for the commnet take care

If you take a close look at the designs of Polynesian tattoos, they almost look closely related to that of South-East Asian tattoos. Particularly, the Philippines
jusitke07 3 years ago
it really doesn't matter what design or how the design look like, if it on somebody's body you'll know its a tattoo..hahaha..jks friend thanks for the comment
