The great depression lasted from 29 - 33. There were no additional seven years, it didn't even last seven years.

The run on banks and psychological panic was largely responcible. The question is, how do you control psychological panics... Hence they invented the FDIC. And a depression hasn't happened since. Problem solved.

hey, i am a grade 10 student living in Canada, in our history class our teacher often said "how did the great depression end?" and the class would go "social programs and gov't help". This bugged me a lot ! i felt that the gov't run schools started to brainwash students in high school. whenever that happened i would always say to the people next to me that, those social programs were communist and didn't work. I would like to know your opinion on this please

You may be interested in reading "Money, Bank Credit, and Economic Cycles" by DeSoto (available as free download from Mises). It details the history of banking from Rome to the present. The instability in the marketplace stems from fractional reserve lending. That instability was then cited as the need for centralized control over all banking (which did nothing to address the real cause of instability). If we move to a 100% reserve system (gold or fiat), stability will return.

Sometimes the answers really are that simple.  If you try to limit the market by force there is less market activity (i.e. a recession/depression). The claim that "it is us who are the government" needs to be examined. How often have you been elected? How often has your vote swung an election? That is how often you've been at least partly the government.

The gov't is an organization which lays claim to a territorial monopoly on the initiation of violence, a claim which enforces itself. The organization is made up of those who are on its payroll (e.g. soldiers, politicians, & bureaucrats). Unless you are a gov't employee, you aren't a part of the gov't.

In all likelihood you're a student who will, upon entering the working world in just a couple years, find out that the gov't does in fact own him, as a de facto slave.

If you find a decent job, & the income brackets & FICA taxes are anything like they are now, you'll be taxed no less than 30% of your yearly income. At 40 hrs/week, this would mean you are working for the gov't 12 hrs/week. This is what I mean by de facto slavery.

This doesn't even take into account the sales taxes you'll pay to the state, the property taxes you'll pay (through your rent) to the state or county, & the likely devaluation of your savings through inflation.

Each year, it's fair to guess 50% of your income will be going to the gov't. If you make any attempt to refuse payment or defraud the collectors, gov't agents will arrest and jail you. Failing that, they will kill you.

As far as they are concerned you can neither jail nor kill them in turn. This is what I mean by a monopoly on the initiation of violence.

Serfdom is not "archaic." It's exactly what's in store for you. Unless you become a gov't employee yourself, anyway.
