Also, as you can see, she doesn't seem to feel too comfortable to sing here, she looks like she had to do it because they asked her to do it and of course, her former husband (Mottola) was there, so it is obvious she didn't have any other choice
@mikhel000 I think objectively, without comparing it to anything else, this performance is undoubtedly amazing. It might not reach the absolute perfection of some other performances but the emotion is there and as with all Daydream era performances of this song, it's a wonder. It was made over a month *before* the Europe leg but after the Tokyo concerts of the tour. It should also be rememered that unlike Tokyo and MSG this is the completely unedited, live performance.
@stardusth2o On close inspection there are various points in the Tokyo footage where the editing can be seen. E.g. in Without You you see here taking breaths while you're still hearing the note being sang....
I enjoy them in any form but just wish we had the full, true live recordings as they originally took place.
@mikhel000 I also think the only reason she looks uncomfortable is because she is understandably nervous at performing at such a huge event, in front of the president etc.... a lot of pressure... I think she would've been extremely honoured to perform at it and Tommy is irrelevant, imo she would have certainly performed whether she was with him or not, it's a huge honour and an amazing opportunity to give her rearranged rendition of the song. If not perfect, still totally pre vocal fall.

I love all pre-97 versions of Hero, love the Daydream era performances especially for the brilliant rearrangement... but also love the 93 and 94 vers. I'm amazed by them all!
@mikhel000 Nope, it was right in between the Daydream Tour legs. The Japanese leg was in March of 96, this was in May of 96, and the European leg of the tour was in June 96. She sounds incredible here, and her voice was at its absolute best during the June dates of the tour.

Even while this wasn't her best and it really showed us how tired her voice was even in those early ages of her career, this performance is quite better than anyother she has had since 97 on. Oprah 97 was the perfect example of a gone voice. 2k9 was a fiasco as all of them have been. Sometimes not as bad but she has never had a really good live performance since 96.

I think she should've rested for like, 2-3 years after the Tokyo Dome concert. Her voice was obviously overused during the concert, she would hit all the high notes (like in this performance) that you don't hear in the recording. But it would be amazing if she could sing Hero like that again and hit those high notes. But nevertheless god bless MC, can't wait for her new album.

She starts off the song the same, but you can definitely hear a difference and see how her voice is partially deteriorated. Look at her recent performances of Always Be My Baby and you will see a greater difference.
I would have to say you can do falsetto without whisper. The mark of it being whisper is pushing 'too much' breath past the vocal cords in a controlled way.

@littlegreenbag exactly. Falsetto were those she did to excellence back with Fantasy for example or with Forever. She did a lot of those in Daydream. By 97 with Butterfly she started whispering because her voice was nearing the end, still it sounded "healthy" but a bit after the recording the alcohol abuse she was having really showed and now she just whispers and shouts words. She relies on backing tracks and her backup singers. Her voice is really nowhere near to what it used to be. It sucks
@baretreemty ya drinking occasionally is fine but once you overlap your drinking habit it can take a serious damage to your health especially to your voice. it's her own issues. I don't buy some folks claiming it's due to her aging. She's only 40 and I compare her with other female singers like Patti, Aretha, Celine, Barbara, Chaka, who are in their early 40's & mid 60's and yet they are still able to hit such powerful high notes on their upper chest register. Even her whispers don't sound good.
@baretreemty she can still sing, its coming back, it was just an awkward adjustment, when she gets the rest and she's not drinking, she has it. Some of the notes on her Christmas album just blow me away! And some of the IWKWLI performances did too!

to be honest the best version live is from arsenio hall! that was PERFECT! Here there's a different emotion, but technically is not the best if you listen carefully...

@desbosquets16 I really don't think so. There are imperfections here and there in the Tokyo Concert, when her voice sounds literally flawless in the MSG DVD. Also, the Tokyo DVD wasn't even widely released, was it? Even if it is dubbed, audio from other concerts on the Daydream Tour are just as good, if not better than the Tokyo concert.
@repenttyourself I personally dont think its dubbed, the notes go perfectly with her mouth, and several of her other performances of those songs on the other shows of the tour sound like those, but not identical because there all different live performances. Although its possible its dubbed a little bit, but there is no proof.

Ive always thought it was dubbed in parts of the songs( besides forever) but its just what ive heard. Tokyo Dome i really dont know, i know that little part in make it happen, ABMB, Forever, or maybe without you even though i dont see that what everyone says. But either way she was amazing, incredibly amazing :P

you really can tell that she partly dubbed the performance cause when it's live, you hear the band through her mic. when it's her in the studio, you only hear her voice... of course. it's really obvious here!! :)

to be honest the best version live is from arsenio hall! that was PERFECT! Here there's a different emotion, but technically is not the best if you listen carefully...
I also like the performance at Jay Leno, that was SUPER! In 96 her voice was changing.

wanna say a few things:
1.mariah was perfect in this show
2.she didn't whistle in this version at all
3.what she was wearing is a dress not a miniskirt
4.the audience didn't react very much because this was a very special occasion

I love how she did the runs in 95 and 96, her voice was nearing the end and that's exactly what makes it so beautiful because it adds a little screechy sound in her inflections + she could make them faster... i just love it, it sounds like heaven to me lol

@desbosquets16 all of 1996's performance of hero we have on youtube are undubbed exept for tokyo dome. you have london, paris and of course rotterdam etc. i wish she would have rested a little more after the tour. even if she may miss a #1 hit in 1997 and not have #1 in every year of the 90's. she would have so many more on the 2000's

@repenttyourself msg 95 is dubbed yes, you can easily find undubbed performances... but tokyo dome 96 is partly dubbed as well!! there's a lot of details that shows that!

@desbosquets16 I really don't think so. There are imperfections here and there in the Tokyo Concert, when her voice sounds literally flawless in the MSG DVD. Also, the Tokyo DVD wasn't even widely released, was it? Even if it is dubbed, audio from other concerts on the Daydream Tour are just as good, if not better than the Tokyo concert.

@repenttyourself I personally dont think its dubbed, the notes go perfectly with her mouth, and several of her other performances of those songs on the other shows of the tour sound like those, but not identical because there all different live performances. Although its possible its dubbed a little bit, but there is no proof.

I agree, she was on fire in this tour, her voice was completely out of this world!! there are tones of fan videos here on youtube from this tour and she really sounded awesome, AWESOME!!!!
too bad tokyo dome has been dubbed.... it's not 100% dubbed like msg95 but still! I'd say at least 60% dubbed ^^

@MCsVoice97 O your gonna be mad at me :( all the bootleg of MSG ive seen, it hasnt sounded 100% dubbed to me. Ive always thought it was dubbed in parts of the songs( besides forever) but its just what ive heard. Tokyo Dome i really dont know, i know that little part in make it happen, ABMB, Forever, or maybe without you even though i dont see that what everyone says. But either way she was amazing, incredibly amazing :P

Your video now has me question if alot of her post 1997 live vocals have been dubbed. and i even now wonder about her pre-Butterfly era vocals. So how can u tell if something is dubbed if the dubbed vocals are meant 2 match the mouth movements of the singer?

@dafuture93 i can tell because it just doesn't match perfectly!! + when it's not 100% dubbed you can hear the difference between the live voice and the studio voice, the quality is not exactly the same... well let's say I have very good ears and I know her very well! ;) every concerts she released before 97 are dubbed!... :( exept for her debut showcase in 90.

you really can tell that she partly dubbed the performance cause when it's live, you hear the band through her mic. when it's her in the studio, you only hear her voice... of course. it's really obvious here!! :)
