I agree that I would LOVE to see a Hank Gathers highlight reel from this game. I remember watching this game in awe of LMU and Chris Jackson (Abdul-Rauf). I would also love to see a Jeff Fryer highlight reel from the LMU/Michigan game from the NCAA's that season!
i am not a fan of either team. but, i remember watching this game. i was far more impressed with Hank Gathers than i was with Shaquille. its unfortunate that we are stuck watching the highlights of Shaquille and not the incredible game of Hank Gathers...48pts 13rebs. i remember Hank making an beautiful, left-handed jump hook, late in the game!
Look what kind of player Hank Gathers was : Shaq got most of his 12 blocks on him that night (I finally saw the game, there's a streaming in the LSU page) but still he managed to get 48 points against him. He was so tough he kept on going against him anyway. In the second half he kinda understood how to go against him and he overplayed him. Even got a huge left handed jump hook against him in overtime, and Hank was only 6-7!
How come you can find a "resume" of Shaq's performance and not a video of Hank's incredible game? 48 points against Shaq and Stanley ROberts, the guy was tough! I heard people saying he'd be too short to play 5 in the NBA, he got so much heart he was going to be a great player, that's sure. I wish somebody could upload the full game PLS, I live in Italy and never saw it.
@arhenetwork I'm not saying I didn't enjoy watching Shaq's great game, I say I'd like to see also flashes from Hank's one. That was the last big game of his life, Shaq had many many more
@bossu3konn was your statement "he got so much heart" a REALLY bad and tasteless pun or were you trying to honor him by saying he died from playing with too much heart like "courage and skill" ????
@bossu3konn - I agree 100%. Nobody is doubting Shaq's performance, but he gave up 48 points on D!! I remember watching this game live - one of the all-time great NCAA games ever.
@bossu3konn Wow, he must have been relentless to get 48 points because it looked like he was the one that Shaq blocked about 10 times. I wanted to see him try a good shot-fake at least once.
LSU won this game in overtime 148 to 141. Hank Gathers had 48 points and 13 rebounds against the over 7 foot tall Shaq and Stanley Roberts - consider one of the greatest college basketball games of all time...RIP HANK GATHERS.
Those LSU teams were the most underachieving teams in the history of college basketball!! All that talent, and I mean, they were loaded, but they never even made the elite 8 in any of Shaq's three years!!
Shaq just eats too much. The league MVP would be the guy who can get him to stick to a diet. Shaq will do anything to win. Anything but watching what he eats.
@Beachnut32 ...no...shaq>hank gathers in this game....shaq was wayyyyy more efficient offensively....this was shaqs freshman season,as u can see chris jackson was his teammate.....chris jackson is one of the best scorers in college history.....shaq was a 3rd option......shaq still scored a ton of points, and dominated the boards and defensively...........hank was good, but shaq was better
Well this was so long ago but I can remember this much. Bo Kimble and Hank Gathers were All Americans, Shaq was not even considered as the third best player on his team as a 17 year old freshman. Loyola Marymont were putting 200 points on people so the just had to learn the hard way.
This is one of the most underrated college basketball games of all time. I am still sad that Hank Gathers is no longer in this world, I always wanted to see how he would have turned out in the pro's. This is also the game where Hank Gathers stopped taking his heart medicine due to him feeling sluggish.
nope....it was shaq who outplayed gathers in this game....u say shaq was sucking wind before halftime?....ok,assuming that is true that only ADDS to this great shaq game....an exhausted 17 yr old freshman getting a triple double vs a great team?.....thank u for adding to shaqs legacy
NOPE....thats not enough said....you forgot to post how many shot attempts gathers had because it a was a ton....shaq had a higher fg%.....why mention 13 rebounds when shaq had 24 in fewer minutes.....arent u forgetting shaq had 12 blks also and that his team won?.....there is more to outplaying someone that having more total points as an individual
lsu wins....enough said....why even mention 13 rebounds when it is 11 less than shaqs 24.....did u know that shaq was the 3rd option?....not because he was 3rd best though.....shaq outplayed gathers, the footage doesnt lie
Great basketball game! I remember this one, LMU lost in double OT 141-148... Shaq had MAD skillzzzzz but LMU had last laugh making it to the Elite 8 after crushing Michigan 149-115 in the Sweet 16
He is honestly better than most NBA centers in the game right now at age 17. Dude is beast out there, nobody can stop him.
