i am not a fan of either team. but, i remember watching this game. i was far more impressed with Hank Gathers than i was with Shaquille. its unfortunate that we are stuck watching the highlights of Shaquille and not the incredible game of Hank Gathers...48pts 13rebs. i remember Hank making an beautiful, left-handed jump hook, late in the game!

Look what kind of player Hank Gathers was : Shaq got most of his 12 blocks on him that night (I finally saw the game, there's a streaming in the LSU page) but still he managed to get 48 points against him. He was so tough he kept on going against him anyway. In the second half he kinda understood how to go against him and he overplayed him. Even got a huge left handed jump hook against him in overtime, and Hank was only 6-7!

I heard people saying he'd be too short to play 5 in the NBA, he got so much heart he was going to be a great player, that's sure. LSU won this game in overtime 148 to 141. Hank Gathers had 48 points and 13 rebounds against the over 7 foot tall Shaq and Stanley Roberts - consider one of the greatest college basketball games of all time...RIP HANK GATHERS.

Well this was so long ago but I can remember this much. Bo Kimble and Hank Gathers were All Americans, Shaq was not even considered as the third best player on his team as a 17 year old freshman. Loyola Marymont were putting 200 points on people so the just had to learn the hard way.
