UK could have survived alone, being quite a big economy, but we would have been disadvantaged, so we had a choice between joining America and Canada or the EU. The problem with a Canada and America tie was the distance, and the fact America would be dominant and that the US actually wanted the UK to join the EU anyway. To be prosperous we do need the EU. But business is using the situation now to keep wages low and competition high (and jobs rarer).

The trade pact that once was, has become a forced conglomeration of nations, where individual state leaders have less power than unaccountable Euro state bureaucrats. Well, the fact unelected EU leaders can dictate UK law is worrying. For example- they changed the motorcycle test here recently to make it much more expensive and difficult to pass. When I was at university I did some low paid work to get some more money, and the Brit workers worked very hard in long shifts. If we allow companies to fill places with forign skills, then they will not train the local popullation, and that will result in an unskilled british workforce, which we cannot allow. busniess will always take the easy option.

I am 1/4 Italian myself, but a UK citizen. It is the easy filling of skills shortages when training should be offered to UK population I have problem with. I lived in Devon until I was 14, and my own experience of Devon is it can be difficult to fit in there for a British person who doesnt come from the south-west. Devon is nice, but expensive (water rates, council tax...), there arent many jobs down there. I lived in Plymouth and still visit friends. Its probably nicest UK place to live.

If a large number of people come into an area meant for fewer people, they are going to cause problems just by being there, and local people are going to notice it. The prices for the houses in your country are shoot up sky high, not because some Poles have come there, these is because the half of population do not pay for them at all, they are just simply got them from the government , so half of you have to kill themselves in order to make another half to sit on their asses doing nothing. You know nothing my love, I used to live in an area of Nottingham city where house prices were relatively normal and average for this part of the country. However, since around 2004, with the entry of some 600,000 Poles into Britain, they have risen sky-high and are still very high now. I have nothing against the Polish wanting work, I support them in finding it...it's just you have to have limits.

Yes, stegalXX, BUT BUT what you refer to is a different matter entirely, as the free european jobs market is NOT reciprocal- you try to get a job in another country !! It won't happen unless there is nobody else to employ.That's a fact.

This is NOT about foreigners taking the jobs; It IS all about skilled British workers being refused access to those jobs, on their home soil.

the point is they are not probably skilled workers, their salary demands are too high and most of all the government are saving the Job of many many brits on the continent. Well, as stegal says, *Irish* workers are employed in certain trades in Sweden, as well as Chinese and other nationalities.. maybe it's just that no-one much wants to hire *English, Welsh and Scottish workers*... don't ask me why... though the German building trade used to employ Brits, didn't it - I've seen "Auf Wiedersehen Pet" - you'd think that all our Geordies went over there during the 80s and 90s!

I've often thought that businessmen and compary directors are among the most irrational people going - just look at Donald Trump or that puffed up Alan Sugar that we have advertising themselves on TV over here... and they employ people for irrational, "gut", meaning prejudicail reasons. (Ie, not that they can do the job - that's why women are restricted to such a narrow range

Though doubtless the employers shift their "traditional preferences" if they work out that they can get workers from the more desperate and Third-World countries to work for less, which is usually the case.

Maybe the next jobs war will be between men and women (especially since marriage seems to be getting rarer.) WE want our slice of the pie, like, now.

The British Government is destroying the country. They are wiping out the British worker. What is happening with the oil refinery is only the tip of the iceberg with regard to foreign workers who are taking every job in the country. From the building industry to ordinary warehouse jobs, British workers are losing out to Eastern European workers. I actually hope we see total civil war eventually. Labour have betrayed the indiginous population like no other government has ever done before.
