Only Italians can make kissing someone the same as despairing of them. Sonny would never have been godfather, he never learned. He brought Carlo in and never recognized him as an enemy. He underestimated Micheal and the other families. He struck them when the family was in shambles. He even lashed out at Tom when he tried to help. Sonny never extended his love to his wife/children unlike Vito, he never had just reason to amass more power and protection the way Vito did. He was indulged.

there's so much amazing acting in this scene my head explodes from the awesomeness, i know it wouldve been a disaster but how fun would it have been to see sonny as the long term don....oh and he is also my favorite Corleone

In The Godfather Jimmy Caan was my favorite charakter in the movie but ryan49er1 has right if he were the don,and this said michael and don vito also in the movies,it would be not good 'cause hes to much angry and to emotiol and this is very bad as an Don..….i hate Frankie Coppola for that,that he make it in that way that santino gets shot (brutal death)

It was partly Sonny fault when the whole war with the 5 families began. He spoke his mind to somebody outside the family, of which Sollozo thought that Sonny may even consider his offer and therefore attempted to assasinate Vito in hopes that Sonny may be the new Godfather and accept his offer. Both Sollozo and Sonny being fools.

How could it cool would it have been if Sonny didn't die and became Michaels right hand man (his underboss),with Fredo as the consigliarie and Tom Hagen as their real lawyer .Hell they could of been one hell of a family.

Fredo was too much with the people.Thats no good.as a leader,you have to be different but understand the people,like a president. He understood the people but didnt have the ability(according to his original character) to be different for the protection of the family.

@manufran02 That would've been very weak. Fredo was already too stupid, impregnating many women, being pushed around by Moe Greene, being on his own fathers bad lists. Sonny was also a fool, with his tempestuousness and the fact that his accidental talk in the meeting almost caused Vito his life and the reason of the war against the 5 families.

Its one of the best performance of this movie. Who would say this is acting infront of camera? Look the way Al is talking with broken jaws... look the way Tom is reacting and Sonny is the boss here. Some acting......

@ryan49er1 Actually Vito did try to make him his underboss ,which would of been closer to GODFATHER. He tested him by trying to make him negotiate with a couple of furniture movers that wanted more money.And as you can see Sonny never did make underboss because of his lack of negotiating skill,plus his temper got the best of him.
