  • magnifique interpretation d'un poeme de Esenin!

  • Would greatly appreciate English/ Spanish translation of this beautiful ballade by a marvelous deep touching, sensuous and superb voice of B Shtokolov

  • Wow, this was great.

  • This man had an amazing voice. I don't think I've ever heard anything quite like it. A basso profundo with an effortless upper range and a voice like silk.

  • I came home from Russia in 1986 with an LP, long since worn out, of musical settings of Yesenin's poetry. The whole album was good, but I loved this song most of all. I haven't heard it for about 20 years, so thank you so much, bol'shoye tebe spacibo!

  • Belle couleur.

  • What a gem! Straight to the favourites.

  • Esenin has always been my favorite Russian poet! Ты одна мне помощь и отрада, Ты одна мне несказанный свет.

  • У меня на пластинке эта песня была...

  • Another treasure :-))) Thank you for sharing!

  • Simply perfect. A model of singing with worth feeling.

  • Stunning

  • Милая, милая сердцу Русь. Где же ты?

  • это да... какой талант...

  • Это замечательно!

    Мощь духа, ширь русских просторов...

  • What a voice, great.

Thanks a lot for the posting..

  • This singer is a miracle.

Thanks for the link to the translation.

  • Merveilleux!!!!

  • Thanks a lot for the overwhelmingly moving song. Your explanation on the singer and the content of the song has helped me to appreciate fully this number. Regards

  • jpavlovich

wonderfull singer only a russian could sing like that

  • Beautiful, just beautiful !......5/5

  • From afar his best song in my opinion

    best poem too

  • Greatest voice ever!!!!!!!!!!

  • I was hoping to find a full version of Shtokolov singing this song (thanks, MusashiTzu, for posting the excellent highlight video sometime back), and here it is . . . beautiful!

How does he do those pianissimo high notes? However does he do that? Wow.

  • wonderfull posting!!!!! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!.... so many dear remembrances come again with this song/words.... one of the favourite poems of my childhood....

  • Stunning! Bravo! TY.

  • What a discovery!Thank you.

  • 3:40 - I envy this man for having such an effortless upper range, let alone being able to sing it pianissimo!!

  • Спасибо.

  • Sergey Yesenin ( 1924 ) ....in the memory of the Great poet !!!

  • Thank you for this discovery! Such an amazing voice, and great interpretation of this famous poem. I showed my mother this clip and she told me he was very well known in her youth (when she was in Russia). Please upload more of him, if you can...

  • I've searched Steane and Nigel Douglas and can find nothing about this great voice. It's just stunning that no one seems to have ever heard of him-a real basso profundo with such a beautiful sound through the full range. And the pianissimi-gorgeous.

  • Spasibo. Even though the lyrics of the song don't match his type much in my opinion, he performed it wonderfully. The song is very powerful, as most of Yesenin's poems, and the music is absolutely stunning, poignant, makes one's heart cry.

  • Che bellissima voce! I am just astonished with this mans voice.I am a big opera aficionado but I was not at all familiar with Shtokolov until now.Basso profundos usually don't sing pianissimi and mezza voce as beautifully as he does. And what a wonderful timbre and tone he has.His voice sends chills through me.Mille grazie khankonchak for sharing this breathtaking piece with us.Bravo Shtokolov!

  • @CraigFrancisSoto Sono veramente in debito verso te for having introduced me to this voice. BRAVISSIMO!!!!!

  • wow this is so beautiful, and such an effortless production of a bass voice.

  • The heartbreaking beauty of his voice and the Romances is matched by the tragic absence of this great, unmatched basso from the American audience...no concerts, no recordings...how sad!

  • Thank you for introducing me to possibly the most beautiful and moving singing voice that I have ever had the good fortune to hear...

  • One word-Astounding!

  • Deep and smooth. Powerful without being overpowering. What more could you ask for. Very very nice. Please post more. A true Basso Profondo!!!!

  • Do you know where to find sheet music for some of the songs he sings? I am a basso profondo(not nearly as good as him) and would like to find some solo peices to add to my repituare. If you know where to find cds of his music that would be great also because I do not have a record player.

  • You're right, I've never heard of this man. And now, I'm glad I've discovered this absolutely powerful, graceful, moving voice that moves smoothly as spilled oil.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for putting this recording on YouTube. I wouldn't have discovered such beautiful singing otherwise.

  • wow...

  • What a voice! I have never heard anything like it before. Thanks for posting the song and the voice.

  • This is a great thing, both for poetic and musical message, that great voice included.

I only regret (much) that the sound was - remasterd ? - in such a way that high sounds (trebles) were cut off. For me it is a pity.

  • Hmmm...it could just be your speakers, or some other technical issue. No such problems here- the remastering is acutally quite good, and the recording sounds wonderful on my system. Strange...

  • I'm so glad to see listeners enjoying this memento of a great, great artist. I had the unbelievably good fortune of catching him in recital at the Maly Zal of the Philharmonic in St.Petersburg in 2003- it must have been one of his last concerts. Towards the end of Shtokolov's life the voice had become a bit brittle and hoarse, but his singing had lost none of its expressiveness or capacity to stir the soul. Tears welled up in my eyes that evening, as they did when he passed, on January 6, 2005.

  • Gorgeous!

A realy powerful voice, deep and sensual...

Thank you so much for posting this!

  • СПАСИБО

  • What a wonderful voice!!!

  • WHAT A TREASURE!!!!!!!!! OH MY GOD!!!!!

    Thank you soooooooo much!

I adore his voice..... and remember him in Mariinsky ...as Gremin in 'Eugeny Onegin'.... Your video ..... and Esenin ....brought tears to my eyes.....
